Chapter 169: Chapter 169: Nashville
The cinema quickly darkened, and the movie began.
At first, when the woman played by Charlize Theron appeared on screen, no one recognized her.
It wasn't until she spoke that everyone suddenly realized it was Charlize Theron.
"My God, is that really her? Are you sure the director didn't use a body double?" Fernando exclaimed, surprised. Although many reports had claimed that Charlize Theron had sacrificed a lot to play the villain, including altering her appearance, the transformation was so extreme that it was still hard to believe.
"It seems Charlize is really going for the Oscar this time," Bonchi said, his curiosity piqued.
It was fascinating to see her transition from a beautiful, elegant woman into such a messy and unkempt female assassin.
But soon, all their thoughts shifted to the assassin's fate as the story unfolded, especially when Charlize Theron's character killed for the first time.
The leaves formed dappled shadows under the moonlight, casting her face in a flickering light that seemed to hint at her inner turmoil.
Then, Charlize's character led a life of deception and murder, killing several drivers to earn money.
Each time, the shadows on her face grew darker.
Even under the scorching sun, tree shadows would fall across her face, obscuring her increasingly fierce expression.
Eventually, she confessed to her female lover, and after a quarrel, the two embraced, eventually falling onto the bed.
Their bodies twisted, rose, and fell, and Bonchi couldn't tear his eyes away.
Dim sunlight filtered through thick glass onto the bed, where the two bodies, not entirely pure, intertwined like goddesses in an oil painting.
Though the scene was filled with desire and longing, it didn't feel at all vulgar. Instead, Bonchi saw love in it.
It was the dangerous, fragile bond between two women in love.
This led him to raise his evaluation of Monster, a film he had initially thought would only showcase Charlize Theron. He didn't expect that with just one intimate scene, the other female lead's character would be highlighted.
By the time the movie ended, Fernando looked at Bonchi. "So, what do you think?"
"It's okay… I can't really say much about the rest yet."
"Of course, I understand." Fernando smiled. As a film critic, he knew how to avoid spoilers, but from Bonchi's words, he understood the essence of what he was trying to say.
After leaving the cinema, staff members from New Market Film Company were already waiting with feedback forms.
After a brief survey, 80% of the audience gave it a score of 7, while 10% gave it an 8.
This undoubtedly proved the film's appeal. When the report was sent back to the company, the higher-ups let out a sigh of relief.
That evening, the reviews from various critics were published.
Milon, browsing websites at home, came across reviews for Monster.
At that moment, he was in his house, but standing beside him was a familiar silhouette.
It was Judy. She was wearing pink slippers, walking around his living room, inspecting the furnishings and paintings.
For some reason, she had suddenly decided to visit, and Milon didn't feel like refusing, so he let her come over.
Once inside Milon's room, Judy made herself comfortable, examining everything.
Milon, however, couldn't help but feel nervous, maybe because of the scent of her perfume or the enticing thoughts in his head.
Had she not suggested watching a movie, he wouldn't have known how to hide his nervousness.
In fact, the two of them hadn't watched another movie since they finished Saw, because that film had been too terrifying.
Judy had been startled several times during the movie, and Milon's arm had turned purple from her squeezing it.
Everyone said that when girls are scared, they would seek comfort, but why did Judy instead want to squeeze him?
Milon couldn't figure it out, so he didn't want to risk picking another horror movie this time.
Originally, Monster wasn't even on his radar, but after seeing the reviews, he thought it might be worth watching.
Bonchi had said: "If I were to rate this movie, it would only take two words: 'Subversion.' Charlize Theron has completely subverted herself, from her appearance to her posture to her voice. Honestly, if I didn't know she was the lead, I wouldn't have associated this ugly woman with her."
"However, compared to Charlize Theron's 'disfiguring' acting, the director's storytelling skills are mediocre. The entire story is flat and linear, without any remarkable features. It's a bit disappointing," Bonchi continued. "Thankfully, the film's cinematography and set design are unique, which saved the visual experience. And the intimate scene between the two leads truly showcased their love."
Milon glanced at the Monster poster and noticed that the art director and cinematographer were both listed as Ethan's name, and he couldn't help but click his tongue.
"What's up? Are you looking at Monster?" Judy asked as she finished looking at all the paintings. She leaned over, her hair brushing against Milon's ear, making him feel a little ticklish.
"Isn't this a horror film?" Milon asked, wondering if Judy was a bit strange. She clearly liked paranormal phenomena but steered clear of bloody horror films.
According to her, she knew supernatural phenomena weren't real, but murderers were widely present in American society.
Watching a movie about murderers made her feel unsafe.
"No, it's based on a real event… Charlize Theron stars in it, but the person it's based on is already dead," Milon explained, trying to sound casual, though it was not because of the intimate scene.
"That's fine," Judy said, intrigued when she heard it starred Charlize Theron.
The two then read through several reviews.
Fernando: "Excellent lighting techniques, excellent set design, excellent acting, and terrible storytelling. That's how I would describe Monster. If you want to see 'disfiguring acting', you must watch this, because this is Charlize Theron's most transformative role since her debut."
"And there are many metaphorical and suggestive shots in the film. The most impressive is when Charlize kills for the first time and the lighting on her face. Coupled with her expression, I could almost mistake it for a documentary rather than a movie."
"I believe Charlize Theron's stellar performance will certainly earn her an Oscar nomination, so it's worth the ticket price."
"Do you want to go see it?" Milon looked up at Judy, but accidentally caught a glimpse of her neckline.
His face instantly turned red.
Judy, however, didn't notice and nodded as she looked at the reviews. "Let's watch this one then."
Meanwhile, Taylor was in a recording studio, undergoing a test by Ethan.
After singing three songs, she stepped out of the recording booth, looking eagerly at Ethan.
"Not bad," Ethan nodded. "I'm impressed, Taylor."
"Really?" Taylor smiled proudly, lifting her swan-like neck. "So when do we start our camping trip?"
"Soon!" Ethan smiled. "We'll be heading there in two days. Make sure you have everything ready."
"No problem!" Taylor jumped up excitedly, looking just like a child.
However, two days later, her excitement turned into dead calm.
They were now sitting on a plane heading toward the camping destination: Nashville.
It should have been something to be happy about, but unfortunately, her brother, mother, and even Carl were on the plane as well.
Oh, and Carl was sitting in the front with Ethan, while she was stuck in the back with her brother, enduring his incessant chatter while she helplessly put on her headphones.
This wasn't how she imagined it, and it made her feel a little resentful.
In this mood, the plane took off and ascended into the sky...
Three hours later, they arrived at the camping site by rental car.
"Let's go set up the tents!" Her brother, Austin, shouted as he ran toward the mountain, holding a tent like a primitive wild man.
Her mother followed behind, trying to warn him. "Slow down, Austin, watch out for bugs and snakes!"
Taylor and Carl stood by Ethan's side, not moving.
"Let's set up the tents first," Ethan said, grabbing another tent. There were five tents in total, one for each person.
Her mother had initially wanted to share a tent with Taylor, but she refused.
So, there were a lot of tents to set up.
But it was still only noon, so they had plenty of time to deal with the camping challenges.
"Ethan, leave the tents to me!" Carl, who was quite good at it, said confidently. "I camped in the forests of the UK all the time, setting up small tents, making tea, and sitting on stools. Ah, it was bliss."
"That works for me." Since Carl had taken on the tent task, Ethan casually grabbed an axe and shovel, planning to gather some firewood.
"I'll go with you!" Little Taylor immediately followed Ethan, grabbing the shovel.
Ethan didn't say anything and led her into the woods to gather sticks.
At that moment,Taylor suddenly asked, "Ethan, why did we come here?"
She didn't understand why they had to camp in Nashville. Though it was the birthplace of American country music and the scenery was beautiful, there were similar places near New York as well.
Ethan turned and glanced at her. Little Taylor was wearing a white dress with a pink coat and a bunny ear hat today. She looked very adorable.
Seeing her puzzled expression, he replied, "I found a teacher for you here."
"Teacher!"Taylor was stunned at first, then he stood there, threw away the shovel and said angrily: "I don't need any teacher!"
