Chapter 0.1
Hawar of the Winter Garden 1
Chapter 0.1 Meeting in Winter
As the wagon rattled and moved, her body swayed from side to side.
Canola, who was sitting and leaning on the seat with her back, was staring at the wind with her opened mouth. She breathed out with a. ‘Ha’, and the breath became cloudy. It wasn’t just a hallucination; in fact, it was definitely so cold. She grabbed the blanket tightly to wrap it around her body and crouched more. She appeared dignified and mischievous under her position, but it would be better than freezing to death. Canola put her neck into the blanket and buried her face.
Opposite her was an old man who was also sitting with a blanket wrapped around his body. He blinked his eyes, looking out the window, speaking in a clear voice.
“What kind of unexpected thing is this?”
Canola poked her eyes out of the blanket at the sound of his voice that looked like she was about to cry.
“It’s not out of the blue, in fact, we should have at least expected it, Oscar.”
Oscar intended his words to comfort Canola, but he was the one who had his sensitivity reduced. He then started lamenting with his mournful voice.
“Everyone has no conscience at all! There is no place for you to have a marriage contract, and even if there was, why did they send you to a place like this?”
“Why are you even assuming that there isn’t?”
As if he couldn’t even hear Canola’s voice as he asked the question, Oscar kept complaining about it himself.
“Everyone knows that our princess will never sit on the throne whether the heaven or earth are opened, so why do they need to do this? Are there other people who are ruder than them?”
“Hey, Angelina. Are you cursing them now?”
Sitting next to Canola was also trembling. The old man across from them, glanced at Oscar. Not feeling his gaze, Oscar clenched his fists and wept.
“Aigoo. There is nowhere that doesn’t hurt, how am I supposed to withstand the cold?!”
“… Wasn’t that my concern in the first place?”
As Oscar was filled with sorrows, Canola looked rather astute. She knew that Oscar is too old for this journey, she admitted that, however, isn’t it only right for him to worry about his Master first? When Canola concluded why Oscar was sad, she puffed her cheeks and glared at him. Oscar, who had lived twice as long as Canola, couldn’t change his expression at all.
Angelina, who looked at her Oscar with pitiful eyes, said in her shrill voice.
“It’s because I’m getting old, and my ears are getting deaf. Anyway, why did you make a fuss about that, old man?”
At Angelina’s words, Oscare turned his head to her with his puzzled expression. Written on Angelina’s face the threatening gaze, but she had not much strength left, therefore her eyes looked rather pitiful. Canola stared at Oscar and her urge to take off her blanket and give it to him rose. Of course, she had no intention of doing that, otherwise she’d die.
Whether or not she knew Canola’s gaze, Oscar yelled at Angelina in her stern voice.
“Who does this devil old lady call an old man? For your information, I am struggling with my cold knee.”
Even with a solemn voice, they were very vulgar words. But Angelina was immune to vulgar words he uttered, and she didn’t bat an eye, sarcastically saying to him.
“Hello, I know for sure that you’re cursing at me like a ghost.”
“If only Grandma had prepared a better carriage, we wouldn’t be trembling like this!”
At the sight of Oscar turning all his resentment towards her, Angelina burst out laughing as if she was stunned.
“What power do you have to choose your own carriage? If you are so dissatisfied, then go to pick it up yourself!”
“Aigoo, people in the world! That demon old lady made my princess shiver in the cold!”
“That senile old man!”
Canola put her face outside of the blanket once again. Thanks to them, the mumbled words under her breath weren’t heard.
“Yes, yes. Seeing them lively warms my heart.”
Deciding to leave the two old people arguing loudly, Canola crouched as hard as she could. She even had to curl up a little more to stop the heat from escaping. Still, there is nowhere she could go by horse-drawn carriage. If she had to ride or walk with the horse because the road was rough, she would have really lost her temper and would have cried out to go back immediately. She may have lied on her back saying she couldn’t take one more step. No, it might be more difficult to lie down in the snow.
With the loud voices of the two oldies in the background, Canola struggled to roll her head, frozen in the cold. So, how did she come to be like this in the first place? Just a month ago, she was living her best life, inside a warm country. She was comfortably living inside her castle, painting on her own peacefully, and was very happy and satisfied with her life as it was. She didn’t want anything but her life in those days.
She did mention earlier that marrying one day is something she expected. She just didn’t know that it would be against her own will. No matter how philanthropic a person she is, why does she have to meet her man in the country where rumors about him fly everywhere? If it was her real man that she had been around so much, why not? Crossing the mountains, step by step, would she have crossed this border if that was the case?
“By the way, Princess, did you break up with that psychopath?”
“What do you mean he’s a psychopath, Angelina? He has a decent name which is Heseon!”
“There is no way that a person can be healthy just because their name is okay. You can tell just by looking at him, Oscar. What would you do if your name was only Oscar? He’s a crippled inspiration.”
“What’s the difference with mine? You call me the devil old lady Angelina!”
“My name was a sensation back in my younger years!”
An argument that seemed to have been quite rekindled. In Canola’s eyes, it was either Oscar or Angelina, but she decided to keep her thoughts alone. Instead, she recalled the Heseon mentioned by Angelina.
The last thing her eyes caught about him was when before she got into this wagon. He glared at her as if he was about to spit out his flame at any moment. The targets he should be aiming for were Canola’s brothers.
He seemed to think that Canola was running away from him. He was really too self-conscious. It’s true that Canola wanted to end her relationship with Heseon, but with that in mind, it was Heseon, not her, who would leave. Heseon was the one who came to her country to study in the first place. Therefore, anyone who leaves after a breakup must be Heseon. That said, she was devising to get rid of him, but she was certain that she would be the first one to be kicked out.
In fact, she was hoping that he would make a scene and turn the tables around, hoping that he would threaten her if she dared break up and leave him.
Canola pursed her lips. As her final days approaches, Heseon stares at her and threatens her, but does not show any of his actions.
“Of course, he doesn’t want to attack my brother either, but…”
If he was only going to roll his tail like that, don’t try to bluff. Or just accept the breakup. At any rate, he was a man who was ahead of his own self-esteem until the end. If I had known he was such a bad guy, I wouldn’t have wanted to meet him! It was just a pity that his last date was with such a pathetic guy. Canola sighed and buried her head completely in the blanket.
Goodness, I’m getting married! The words she had been thinking about dozens of times lingered on the tip of her tongue as if they were about to come out.
“Princess, princess!”
Suddenly a cold wind blew. Someone opened the window and urgently called for Canola. His face, the knight, Ludek, who had suffered from cold, was looking at Canola with his puzzled expression.
“There is a problem.”
