Chapter 57: Chapter 57: How to Keep Nagini Awake

In the serene countryside of Dorset, within the quaint confines of Newt Scamander's residence, a significant discussion was underway.

Newt, renowned for his expertise in magical creatures, was examining a diminutive, unconscious snake laid out before him.

"Is this truly Nagini?" Newt inquired, his eyes reflecting a mix of curiosity and concern.

Albus Dumbledore, standing nearby, affirmed with a nod. "Yes, I've verified it. This is indeed Nagini. One of my students subdued her and employed Transfiguration to reduce her to this size."

Newt held a dark green scale in his hand, the same one Dumbledore had retrieved from the sewer. His extensive research on magical animals allowed him to deduce the original magnitude of the snake from the scale's size. The fact that such a colossal serpent had been transformed into this miniature form was astonishing.

"Your student must be exceptionally talented... I initially assumed you had performed the Transfiguration yourself," Newt remarked, impressed.

Dumbledore responded, "He is indeed quite special. But let's focus on the matter at hand. We need to determine how to care for her."

Newt's expression grew resolute. "Nagini is afflicted by a blood curse, transforming her into a beast permanently. Despite this, we cannot neglect her well-being."

Dumbledore agreed but added a note of caution. "The Transfiguration that reduced her size may not be permanent... Are you prepared for that possibility?"

A smaller Nagini posed little threat, but if the spell wore off and she reverted to her original size, the danger would be substantial.

"Let's attempt to awaken her first. I need to assess her current disposition to formulate an appropriate plan... Rest assured, I have ample experience handling dangerous magical creatures," Newt assured.

At that moment, Nagini stirred.

"Has the Transfiguration failed?" Newt asked quickly.

Dumbledore observed closely. "No, it seems the Stunning Spell I applied earlier has simply worn off."

Nagini had fully awakened. She raised her head, surveying her altered body and unfamiliar surroundings. Upon noticing Newt and Dumbledore, she became visibly agitated.

"Hiss, hiss, hiss..."

"She's attempting to communicate..." Newt observed, turning to Dumbledore with excitement. "If I'm correct, Nagini's human consciousness is present!"

Dumbledore nodded. "I can comprehend some of it. She indicates that she is conscious... I once studied Parseltongue out of curiosity."

"You are indeed knowledgeable, Professor," Newt acknowledged. "What is she conveying now?"

While Newt could often infer a creature's intentions through behavior and sounds, he lacked the ability to translate their speech precisely.

Dumbledore listened intently to Nagini's hissing, then retrieved a piece of parchment and a bottle of ink, placing them before her.

Nagini dipped her tail into the ink and began to write laboriously on the parchment.

After a moment, both Dumbledore and Newt read the message with surprise.

"You mean that by remaining in this reduced state, your human consciousness remains dominant?" Dumbledore inquired.

Nagini flicked her tongue and nodded slowly. She continued writing.

"As your physical form diminishes, the beastly aspect of your curse weakens, allowing your human consciousness to prevail? It's intriguing... Can Transfiguration influence the soul to this extent?" Newt pondered aloud.

Dumbledore delved into thought. As a master of Transfiguration, he knew that standard Transfiguration couldn't affect the soul. This suggested the involvement of ancient magic.

Robert, Dumbledore's student, had utilized ancient Transfiguration magic to shrink Nagini. This form of Transfiguration not only altered her physical size but also weakened the beastly aspect of her curse, allowing her human consciousness to surface.

The blood curse had essentially created a duality within Nagini: her original human soul and the imposed beastly nature. Over time, the beastly nature had overpowered her humanity, rendering her permanently a snake. However, the ancient Transfiguration had temporarily reversed this dominance.

After contemplating, Dumbledore smiled.

"Perhaps we've discovered a method to temporarily suppress the effects of the blood curse..."

Newt, still processing, asked, "Through Transfiguration alone?"

"Not just any Transfiguration," Dumbledore clarified. "This involves ancient and profound magic. I'll explain further later. For now, I should take Nagini to a secure location."

Newt agreed. "Of course. Write to me with the details when you can. Her safety is paramount."

Dumbledore nodded, opened a small cage, and addressed Nagini. "Please enter. We've found a way to help manage your condition."

Nagini complied, slowly slithering into the cage.

As Dumbledore prepared to leave, an owl flew in through the window, dropping a letter in front of him.

Recognizing the handwriting, Dumbledore smiled and opened the letter.

"Ah... So you seek information and wish to know the name of that senior..."

Mid-sentence, Dumbledore's expression shifted from amusement to deep contemplation.

Meanwhile, at the Hog's Head Pub, Robert set down his quill, transformed the parchment into a butterfly with a tap of his wand, and watched it flutter away.

Tom, lying on a bed nearby, observed Robert's actions with disinterest. However, his sudden movement aggravated his wounds, causing him to wince in pain.

Engaging in a duel with Robert before he was fully prepared had proven to be a costly mistake. Not only was he now covered in bruises, but he had also been punished with a day-long ban on reading spell books.

"This loss was truly unfortunate," Tom mused, resigned to his fate. He lay still, reflecting on his defeat and planning his next strategy.

Soon, a paper crane, crafted from parchment, descended from the attic, landing before Robert. It unfolded itself, revealing a message:

[I will keep your secret. Also, thank you for saving me and Nagini... Oh, and that was a beautiful Transfiguration! - Aurelius.]

Robert read the note with satisfaction before casually burning it. He then turned his gaze toward Tom.

"After reflecting on your actions for so long, do you understand your mistake?"

Tom grumbled, "Yes..."

"And what was your mistake?"

Tom clenched his jaw. "You're really too much!"

"A servant should not talk back to his master..." Robert smirked, continuing to taunt him.

Just then, a familiar voice echoed in Robert's mind.

"Ding! Congratulations to the host for successfully preventing Nagini's descent into darkness and saving those who would have perished by her in the future!"

"Ding! You have earned 5,000 merit points!"

Robert raised an eyebrow.
