Chapter 17: Chapter -17 Don't Play with Snakes.
Chapter -17.
The Christmas break had ended, and the young wizards slowly made their way back to Hogwarts.
Daphne sported the silver-blue bow tie that Brian had gifted her and genuinely remarked on his excellent taste.
Simultaneously, Daphne reconciled with Pansy once more because Pansy had given her a large red bow during Christmas. Although it was rather outdated and unattractive, Daphne graciously forgave her. Daphne stated this.
Malfoy was quite pleased with the Christmas present that Brian had given him; he placed it beside his bed. It was a rare limited edition model, which he claimed he couldn't purchase earlier because his father disapproved of him playing with such items.
Brian smiled faintly; it was a gift from one of his father Mr. Walker's acquaintances, and there were several sets at home.
He had actually intended to give Malfoy a Harry Potter figurine, but he thought it might upset Malfoy—Malfoy consistently provoked Harry, and Brian felt that was certainly a deep-seated affection.
Malfoy brought a book titled "Curses and Counter-Curses" from home, which contained numerous unpleasant curses. He shifted from his usual apathy towards studying and concentrated intently on the curses in the book.
At times, he would even seek Brian's advice, which was unprecedented; Brian had never witnessed him so committed to his studies.
Brian also glanced at his book, which featured many intriguing little curses, such as the baldness curse, leg-breaking curse, and tongue-tying curse. He even offered guidance to Malfoy on the leg-locking curse and other spells, and even Crabbe picked up a few tricks.
As for Goyle, he was still more inclined towards throwing punches.
Malfoy always appeared to have a natural flair for pranks.
Of course, he soon abandoned the book. Brian didn't pay much attention until he heard that Malfoy had used those little curses to play a nasty trick on Neville Longbottom outside the library.
Hermione mentioned in her letter that the book Brian sent her for Christmas was very useful, but she also hinted at some dissatisfaction at the end of the letter, as Malfoy claimed that all those tricks were taught to him by Brian and that he should showcase the effects.
"Well, I did teach him a bit, but I didn't anticipate him doing that..." Brian wrote in his response, "I always believed classmates should get along harmoniously, and I apologize to Mr. Longbottom on his behalf."
"But you know, I can't always control my friend's actions," Brian said helplessly, "I promise I will speak to him."
Naturally, Malfoy took pride in this incident, which left Brian somewhat exasperated. In his previous life, the way to handle unruly, bullying classmates was typically to give them a beating, but he clearly didn't have the authority or position to treat friends that way.
Brian didn't fret about this issue; after all, Malfoy was much more familiar with him.
"However, bullying the weak is not what nobles do, Draco," Brian remarked.
"I'm merely having a fair wizard duel with Longbottom," Malfoy replied proudly.
Life at Hogwarts, while peaceful, was certainly not static.
A Slytherin student in Brian's year, Blaise Zabini, secretly brought a nest of untamed Scottish Silver Serpents into the boys' dormitory without the professors' knowledge upon returning to school after the Christmas break.
He aimed to awaken the hidden powers deep within his bloodline by spending time with them.
The ability to speak Parseltongue had long been lost among Slytherins, but Zabini firmly believed that every pure-blood wizard had that ability concealed deep within their lineage.
However, this was a very perilous endeavor and brought a lot of trouble.
Scottish Silver Serpents had always been a favored magical creature among Slytherins due to their resemblance to the snake on the Slytherin crest, attracting many wizards for domestication and breeding.
Serpents were always willing to obey the commands of wizards who could speak Parseltongue, while others could only tame them through magical means.
But wild silver-scaled snakes are extremely dangerous; they are highly aggressive, very swift, possess a strong territorial instinct, are adept at hiding, and have a considerable level of intelligence. More importantly, they hold grudges. Their venom is potent enough to cause a person to die in excruciating pain within an hour.
When Zabini brought the silver-scaled snakes to the lounge, many people eagerly gathered to observe. Malfoy even expressed a desire to raise one and boldly tugged at the tail of the largest silver-scaled snake.
Zabini, who had never been particularly sociable, relished the feeling of being the center of attention at that moment.
Brian also approached to take a look; they were indeed stunning, with their neatly arranged smooth scales glimmering with a bright silver light, making them exceptionally appealing among slippery snakes.
Zabini felt proud, but he refused to use magic to tame them. He believed he needed their wildness to awaken his hidden powers, ultimately to subdue them through awakening Parseltongue.
Brian shook his head in exasperation; he didn't want to witness a day when Zabini was bitten to death in bed.
Considering the four houses of Hogwarts, their symbolic animals are not ones that can be easily raised or provoked. Gryffindor's lion is well-known for its bravery and pride, possessing an indomitable wildness.
Ravenclaw's eagle is even more proud and tenacious. In ancient times, Muggles attempted to tame them through falconry, but most would rather die than submit, never relinquishing their freedom and the blue sky.
Hufflepuff's badger may seem simple-minded, but it actually has a stubborn character, refusing to give up until its goals are achieved. The honey badger, humorously referred to as "flat-headed brother" in a past life, exemplifies this, holding grudges, being brave and fearless, and indifferent to life and death.
As for Slytherin's snake, they are the most ruthless hunters, always lying in wait, striking decisively when the moment is right, fierce and swift, yet also mysterious and elusive. Snakes do not recognize their owners; even if raised from a young age, one cannot be certain when they might suddenly bite their keeper.
Sure enough, as winter passed and the weather warmed up, that nest of snakes regained their vigor and quickly escaped from Zabini's glass tank. They concealed themselves in every corner of the boys' dormitory, causing chaos.
When Malfoy awoke in the middle of the night, he discovered a silver-scaled snake as thick as his arm coiled around him. He couldn't break free and opened his eyes to see the glimmering snake head watching him maliciously, seemingly contemplating where to bite.
That day, Malfoy's piercing scream seemed to shake the roof, waking up the vast majority of students in the boys' dormitory.
Brian was so startled that he jumped out of bed, fearing Voldemort had taken on Quirrell or that Hogwarts had exploded.
Crabbe and Goyle merely shivered in fear, then turned over and went back to sleep.
The snake coiled around Malfoy was startled; it bit him on the chin and then slid down the bed and escaped through a hole by the door at lightning speed.
Malfoy's sharp chin quickly swelled up and turned an ominous purple, making it appear as though he had developed a purple double chin, and his entire face looked larger. He struggled to pull back the curtains of his four-poster bed, crying out in pain, tears welling in his eyes as he looked at Brian but unable to speak.
Suddenly, Brian thought of something; he didn't have time for Malfoy and hurried out of the dormitory. In the corridor, many little wizards were wearing pajamas, looking confused and unhappy.
Brian ignored them and saw the familiar hole by Zabini's dormitory door. He cast an unlocking spell on the door.
With a loud click, the door swung open, revealing a dire situation inside. Three people in the dormitory had been bitten, while only two fortunate ones had escaped unscathed, sleeping like dead pigs.
Especially Zabini, who had several wounds on him, clearly bitten multiple times by several vengeful silver-scaled snakes. His body had swollen all around, turning him into a purple fat man, and he was now in a deep coma, breathing weakly, as if he were on the verge of death.
The other two were also in bad shape, falling into a coma and struggling to breathe.
Brian found the only piece of dung stone he had and stuffed it into Zabini's throat, temporarily stabilizing his condition, then called the awakened students to help take Zabini and Malfoy to the hospital wing.
Filch stopped them while patrolling, but when he saw the poisoned state of the few, he hesitantly let them pass.
Madam Pomfrey was woken up in the middle of the night and found a large crowd making a racket in the hospital wing; she was furious, but when she saw the dire condition of the four, she was so shocked that she couldn't say a word.
"Oh, poor boys, what have you all done?" She looked at Zabini's tragic state and wiped the corner of her eye with a sad expression.
"Is he going to make it?" the male class leader swallowed hard and asked in a hoarse voice.
"No, if it's any later, he really won't be saved." Madam Pomfrey murmured a long string of spells over Zabini and administered various potions to him, briefly saying, "Fortunately, someone performed emergency detoxification. What was used? I need to know so I can use the antidote accordingly."
"I used dungstone, Madam Pomfrey," Brian said softly.
"Oh, what a clever choice, you saved his life, child," Madam Pomfrey replied gently. "Dungstone has a very strong detoxifying effect; the poison he was affected by is basically no longer an issue, though there might be some residual poison... it's just that his body has been severely damaged."
Brian shrugged. He had a few pieces of dungstone, but he had used them all up while studying potion materials. This one was just a precaution.
Madam Pomfrey busily retrieved a few bottles of antidote and administered them to Malfoy and the others. At this point, Malfoy's entire face was swollen a purplish-red, round like a bludger. Madam Pomfrey had a hard time prying open his jaw.
Under Madam Pomfrey's superb medical skills, everyone was no longer in life-threatening danger and would soon be able to leave the hospital. However, Zabini would obviously need to stay in the school hospital for a few more days.
That night, there was no sleep.
