Chapter 11: Chapter -11 The Great Adventure.
Chapter -11.
Brian knew he was stepping into a risky situation for a couple of reasons. First off, if Quirrell decided to attack without revealing anything about the Dark Lord, things could get really dangerous for him.
No matter how much he had been studying, he knew he couldn't compete with Quirrell.
He had prepared for this moment, relying mainly on a special alchemical item.
Brian glanced at the ring hanging around his neck and let out a soft sigh.
This ring was a gift from his mom before he started at Hogwarts, and it was a powerful piece of magic worth its weight in gold.
It could cast a shield curse, a Countercurse, and even a spell that would help him make a quick getaway—perfect for defending against dark magic.
He hoped this magical item would hold up long enough for him to create a distraction and get the professors to come to his rescue.
Plus, since Quirrell didn't want to reveal himself, he figured the chances of him acting recklessly were pretty low.
So, Brian decided to act a bit bold, dropping his dad's name and hinting at his admiration for the Dark Lord.
This might just encourage Quirrell to open up about the Dark Lord and even tempt him to serve him.
Even if Quirrell kept quiet about the Dark Lord, there was still a good chance he'd be tempted to help with some tasks.
It's worth mentioning that Mr. Walker's name carried a lot of weight.
Mr. Walker was loyal to the Dark Lord and smart enough to protect himself, plus he had a solid reputation among the Death Eaters.
His good relationship with the Lestrange couple—who were always trusted by the Dark Lord—meant he had the Dark Lord's trust as well.
The second risk was the Dark Lord's ability to read minds, known as Legilimency.
Even though he was in a weakened state and might not be able to use it effectively, Brian remembered that in the original story, the Dark Lord could only talk to Harry after drinking unicorn blood. At that point, he could tell Harry was lying, which showed he still had some Legilimency skills.
Not wanting to take any chances, Brian had used a Witness Point to boost his Brain Locking Spell from beginner to mastery level before meeting Quirrell.
That should be enough to handle the Dark Lord's weakened Legilimency.
During his chat with Quirrell, he made sure to show the right emotions, and it seemed like he had gained the Dark Lord's trust.
"In any case, things are starting to fall into place," Brian murmured, "this is definitely a challenging path."
"But hey, it's shaping up to be quite the adventure."
There was a hint of sarcasm in his tone, though it wasn't clear who it was directed at.
...
"Hahaha, you two are such losers! I heard you got caught by the professors last night trying to find a troll?" Malfoy's laughter rang out in the Great Hall, echoing everywhere.
"Oh, you should be thanking the professors for catching you before you ended up as troll food!"
"Malfoy, just shut up," Harry said, his face turning bright red.
Ron's face matched his hair as he waved his wand around like he was swatting flies, trying to get Malfoy to back off.
"Oh, this is the dumbest thing I've ever done," Ron grumbled, glaring at Malfoy's smug expression.
Last night, Harry and Ron had been worried about Hermione, so they left their group to look for her in the girls' bathroom, only to stumble upon a sleeping troll and then get caught by the professors who showed up.
Professor McGonagall was furious, her lips pale, her eyes icy, and her voice shaking as she spoke.
After checking on the troll, Snape remarked that someone had taken it down with the Draught of Living Death, adding, "A clever move, but it clearly couldn't have been Potter and Weasley, could it?"
Fuming, Professor McGonagall said, "How dare you? If it hadn't been stunned beforehand, you would... Oh, each of you loses five points for Gryffindor. Now, go back to your common room!"
The two returned in shame, only to find Hermione waiting for them.
"Where have you been? You shouldn't be running around during dangerous times," Hermione said, looking worried.
"Hermione, come on! We thought you were still in the girls' bathroom, and we got caught by the professors," Ron complained. "You should've told us you were back."
"So... you went looking for me?" Hermione stood up, "Do you have any idea how dangerous that is?"
"And you got caught? No, I need to find a professor to explain that you were caught because of me..." Hermione started to rush out.
Harry and Ron stopped her, saying, "Come on, trust us, Snape will definitely find a way to take points from you again."
"By the way, did you take down that troll?" they asked curiously. "Snape said someone used the Elixir of Life."
"Why would you think that?" Hermione exclaimed. "I never imagined Hogwarts would have a troll! I always thought it was the safest place in the world. If it weren't for Brian..."
"What? Are you saying it was Walker?" Ron's eyes widened.
"Yep, he saved me," Hermione nodded.
"Well, he sure loves the attention," Ron said, feeling a bit jealous, and received a sharp look from Hermione.
"No way, he couldn't have known there would be a troll here, could he?" Harry wondered. "But who would carry a bottle of the Draught of Living Death with them?"
"Harry, do you think it was Brian who released the troll?" Hermione shot back. "Then he would need a bigger box to carry it."
"No, what I mean is, it's just too much of a coincidence, isn't it?" Harry insisted, feeling like he was onto something.
"I'm done talking to you two," Hermione said, fixing her hair and turning back toward the dormitory.
...
After Harry and Ron finally managed to shake off the teasing Malfoy, Harry picked up the conversation from the night before: "I think Walker is acting suspicious; he just happened to show up in the girls' bathroom at the perfect moment, and he just happened to have a bottle of the Draught of Living Death with him."
Ron stuffed a sandwich into his mouth and mumbled, "He must have overheard Professor Quirrell and rushed off to show off."
"Taking down a troll all by himself? That's definitely something to brag about!" Ron said, a bit enviously.
"But he didn't brag about it, did he?" Harry glanced over at Brian, who was quietly enjoying his breakfast, and insisted, "I mean, very few people know it was him who did it, besides us."
"Right, and that night of the duel was also way too coincidental; how did we just happen to wander into that corridor?" Harry's eyes lit up. "Walker was leading the way that day; maybe he wanted us to find it!"
"But if that's true, why would he do that?" Ron asked.
"Maybe he or someone behind him wants to uncover something hidden there, so they went to check it out," Harry speculated.
"Enough with the guessing; we should get to class," Ron said, finishing the last bite of his sandwich.
...
After the Defense Against the Dark Arts class, Brian pretended to hang back to ask Quirrell some questions.
"Sorry, Professor Quirrell, for causing you trouble last night," Brian said with a sincere tone.
"It's alright, I've already gotten the information I needed," Quirrell sneered. "Snape did a great job testing that big dog's abilities for me."
"So, what do I need to do... to help the Dark Lord return?" Brian lowered his voice, his eyes sparkling with excitement and urgency.
"Ah, I think you should find a way to ask about how to deal with that big dog. There must be some method," Quirrell mused. "It's Hagrid's silly pet; you can try to get some info from him."
"Okay," Brian smiled and nodded at him.
...
Time passed slowly, and Hogwarts remained peaceful.
Brian set aside Quirrell's instructions and continued his steady study routine.
The introductory Transfiguration was pretty much enough to handle all the first-year courses, and he had already started previewing the second-year material.
In Charms class, he was doing well, and his Charms level had successfully moved up to beginner.
Similarly, in Potions class, he was already capable of brewing all first-year and even some second-year potions on his own.
Professor Snape was quite pleased with this; even though his leg was badly injured and his mood had been low lately, he still took the time to patiently answer Brian's questions after class.
He even gave Brian a potion notebook filled with improved potion formulas. If it weren't for Brian not having the energy to dive deeper into Potions this semester, he suspected Snape might have taken him on as a private student.
This was one of the perks of his current identity.
As for Alchemy... he really didn't have the energy to study it right now and would have to put it off for later.
Finally, in the memory/general knowledge section, through constant recitation and memorization, he successfully raised his level from beginner to mastery.
He still had 1.2 witness points left, which he decided to save for now. Among those, 0.2 points came from two Quidditch matches.
A new Quidditch match was on the horizon; Slytherin versus Gryffindor. This match was sure to be exciting.
Brian had no intention of interfering with the plot; he just wanted to sit back, enjoy the show, and earn some basic witness points.
