Chapter 34: Rapid progression!
Rapid progression!
Chapter 34:world domination! muhahahaha
After calming down all the animals, time passed normally as it did. There were no special events happening.
There was a lot of progress in the growth of the force, which was now named Vine for some reason. Well, Vira called it that, so it became the official name of the gang.
Also, something worth mentioning was the fact that Vira had to lay in bed for a week after the incident of Lil Viper biting him.
But everything seemed to be well, as he gained plenty of time to gloss over the sadness of Viper's death and accept Silas as a new member of the family. At first, although he was fairly happy, there was some blame and anger toward this kid that surfaced, as Viper had passed away. But no matter who the father was, the kid was Viper's, and aside from a few differences, he seemed exactly like Viper.
One of the differences was the fact that he liked to bite—a lot. In fact, the moment Vira had a shred of ill will, he bit. Fortunately, the reprimand and worry for Vira, as he was knocked down, seemed to have toned him down a bit. Instead of biting the neck and causing more complications than needed, he bit Vira's shoulder.
Which was easily dealt with—at least he did not have to stay in bed for weeks. A few hours of rest after injecting the antivenom was enough. His magical body was a heavenly boon; otherwise, even with the antivenom—which was updated and upgraded every year—with the number of times he got bitten, he would have had a sickly, weak body, unlike the strong and resilient body he had now.
After he woke up from bed and named the organization, he wanted to do the same for Silas. But unfortunately, the name Silas was not from him but from Nicolas, who could not bear to hear the names Niblet, Snappy, and Fang—the last one seemed fine, but before Vira had managed to convince Silas of that name, Nicolas recommended Silas. Considering that Orion Seraphis was a great name, and well… Silas refused to hear any other names.
So, after torturing Nicolas for an entire day—not letting him work—the duo, satisfied with the name, alongside James, once again started traveling around.
Although there was a bit of a heavy conversation—yeah, that's how to say it. There was a heavy and cold atmosphere surrounding the two when Vira, after getting cured and before Silas was named, confronted Nicolas.
It all ended when Vira, completely fine, went straight to Nicolas and asked:
Vira: You investigated me?
Nicolas was already surprised by Vira visiting while he was working, and hearing this question stunned him a bit. He sighed and let Vira sit in the chair.
After Vira sat in the chair where Nicolas worked, he heard Nicolas speak.
Nicolas: I did not investigate you…
Vira: Then! How do you know?!
Nicolas, who was interrupted, seemed not to care as he repeated himself and completed the remaining part.
Nicolas: I did not investigate you… sigh… Just that we seemed to be fated. I had a friend come to me for help regarding his niece. She had just finished her bachelor's in veterinary medicine. So, to help her get a job, he came to me.
Vira seemed to have guessed who the inexperienced nurse was as he interrupted Nicolas in the middle.
Vira: That dumb nurse?
Nicolas, a bit embarrassed, said, "Yes. I've sent her to take care of animals in the south of the city. So don't worry, before she learns to speak, I won't let her back."
Vira: So, what's that gotta do with me?
Nicolas: Well, when he came to me, we drank together, and he mentioned a weird child he treated and… well, other things…
Vira, a bit impatient, interrupted the old man, who was reminiscing and, in his opinion, twisting words too much.
Vira: Get to the point! How do you know it's me?
Nicolas wanted to drag out the conversation a bit more since Vira generally never stayed with him. But seeing his impatience, he said,
Nicolas: Well, he told me about a careless couple with a child, and a strange thing happened—the animals ran after the car. Even the dogs near his clinic ran after him when he was feeding them. So, I guessed it was you, and then he helped me check what happened to you.
Vira: …So that's it?
Vira said, dumbfounded. He had thought there was a big rebellion being plotted against him. Well, what can we say? The time this energetic and overthinking youth spent in bed was too much. Although it helped him sort out his emotional matters, he had also spent way too much time thinking about plots and who was against him—so much so that even this old man was not spared.
Nicolas: Yeah! Now stop drinking the wine—you're too young for it—and get out if you don't wanna do the work.
The last part was said with a bit of anger, as it reminded him of his son, who used to steal wine from his collection whenever he was away.
With these things out of the way, Vira's days of traveling, enjoying delicacies, and drinking wine continued for another four years.
During these years, nothing had changed for Vira or his animals—just a simple life—but for VINE under him, it had progressed immensely, completely controlling the world.
Well, part of it—"THE DARK WORLD."
Basically, the force had grown so much in these years that almost all illegal activities were done by it or its subordinate forces.
Drug trafficking, arms trade, smuggling, money laundering, assassination—everything was under their radar, leaving nothing aside from a few petty thefts outside their watch.
Not only that, but the medical and technical strength of VINE was unmatched by any other in the world.
The medical sector thrived purely by burning money. Talented doctors were snatched in large numbers from all over the world using the black market's information network. And, of course, the benefits—huge benefits. VINE didn't just promise medical professionals and researchers money; it offered them fame, status, and authority. As long as you were good enough, you could have anything.
The technological advancements, however, were Vira's credit. While he didn't build everything alone, most of it was his work. This was probably the first time he had truly utilized the knowledge he carried from his previous life. As a technical geek who made a living off it, Vira knew a lot—especially since he had worked hard to refine his skills. He had even spent time learning about proprietary weapons of cyber-attacks lockpicking, and theft.
From improving programming languages and protocols for the infant internet infrastructure to recreating operating systems and developing software far ahead of its time—Vira did it all. The hardware side was a bigger challenge since he wasn't as well-versed in that field. But when money and force were used to push progress, combined with his guidance—however limited—talented computer engineers managed to solve most of the difficulties.
Vira also understood the tremendous influence rapidly evolving technology would have, so he spared no effort in conquering it. He took complete control of DNS servers, seized undersea projects that would transmit data worldwide, and ensured VINE held the reins of the digital age.
The concept of open-source remained—but the people contributing did not. Whenever a talented individual came up with an idea or worked on improving existing software, they were traced and lured into VINE with the promise of benefits. And, much like the doctors and researchers, most happily agreed.
The means to achieve all of this? Both black and white.
I believe you're more concerned about the effects of the darker methods, so let's talk about that.
For a year, Vira ran rampant with his killings—to the point where there was a bounty on his head and intelligence agencies hunted him everywhere. They had countless successes, managing to trap him repeatedly—but Vira was like a slippery loach, never caught. Eventually, they got so desperate they bombed an entire forest when they received intel on his location.
It almost worked.
Vira was within the effective range of the missile. Even if the missile was low-grade, the heat and shrapnel alone should have killed him. And yet, somehow, he survived.
He woke up surrounded by a crowd of apes—caring for him.
When he asked them why, all they said was that they found him on the ground and carried him because he felt nice to be with. That was all.
The apes didn't know how he had survived. And he, along with Silas, had been completely knocked out during the explosion.
There was no logical reason for his survival. But he had lived through the blast.
And he would live to eradicate every single person who had been involved in the plan.
