Chapter 69: Dumbledore's Persuasions
"Let us now talk about the main thing for which I had summoned you," Dumbledore changed the topic. "Study of Ancient Runes."
Harry nodded and waited for Dumbledore to do the 'talking'.
"I have heard from professor McGonagall that you desire to change your elective subject from divination to study of ancient runes, Harry," Dumbledore said.
"You have heard wrongly, headmaster," Harry said in a neutral tone and Dumbledore raised any eyebrow. Surely, Minerva would not have lied about such a thing.
"I do not 'desire' to change my elective subject from divination to study of ancient runes," Harry continued. "I have already changed my elective subject from divination to ancient runes."
Dumbledore felt dumbfounded at the way Harry had phrased his words.
"And may I know the reason behind your decision, Mr. Potter?" Dumbledore asked as he gazed straight into Harry's eyes/
"You may, headmaster," Harry said. "Firstly, I do not want to study divination. This subject is of no use… Well, it should not be called a subject at all."
"And, the professor teaching the class does not make it any better," Harry said. "Who would want to go to a class where his death is predicted almost every day?"
"Meanwhile," Harry continued. "Study of ancient runes seems quite an interesting and useful subject."
"Professor Babbling, of what I have heard from Hermione and I fully trust her, is a great professor," Harry said. "Unlike few people who can only write on board and shout at students and deduct their points."
Harry's jab at Severus Snape was not missed by Dumbledore but the old man decided to ignore it. With Snape's behaviour towards Harry, Dumbledore was surprised that Harry have had so much control in the past three years.
Dumbledore sighed, "I am afraid I cannot allow this Harry."
Harry put his hands inside the upper robe and pulled the same booklet- Hogwarts: Rules, Regulation & Governance and placed it on the table.
"Headmaster," Harry said. "I believe that neither professor McGonagall heard me correctly nor you."
"I am not seeking any permission," Harry said. "I am informing."
Dumbledore did not seem to mind Harry's words as he picked up the booklet and gave it a flip.
"Where did you find this Harry?" He asked.
"Is it a fake?" Harry asked bluntly.
Dumbledore shook his head, "No… it is genuine."
"And my permission does not depend on this rule book," he said. "There are other factors which I must take into consideration."
"I believe that those factors are not for you to consider, headmaster," Harry said firmly. "I will not go to a class where I am killed almost every day."
Dumbledore narrowed his eyes but regained his gentle demeanour soon. He thought that it was not time to go too harsh on Harry.
With a lot of uncertainty about how Voldemort's soul had been affecting Harry along with this 'nasty' and unusual behaviour from Harry, Dumbledore was not willing to take too much risk. He wanted to keep things in a safe zone.
"Harry," Dumbledore said. "I understand your problem with the divination and I won't force you to attend that class."
"But I need you to agree to one thing I suggest," Dumbledore said. "You should take Arithmancy."
"That would be more suited to you," Dumbledore added with a smile. "It will help in you master your spells better and with your talent in spell casting, arithmancy is perfect for you."
"On the other hand, study of ancient runes is quite a theoretical subject and includes a lot of memorisations about runes symbols."
Harry shook his head; his expression adamant, "No, headmaster."
"I will only take study of ancient runes," he said with a finality in his voice.
"And if it depends on use and what suits me," Harry added with amusement, "then potions is the subject which I should be dropping first."
"Alas! It is not an elective subject," Harry sighed in 'sadness.'
This time Dumbledore felt his irritation and anger rising and if not for his earlier consideration, he would have already lashed out at Harry.
Meanwhile, Harry felt quite amused. He could very well understand the kind of feelings that Dumbledore would have been feeling and he was enjoying himself by doing this whataboutery with Dumbledore.
The old man in his previous life had done this numerous times with Harry and now Harry was repaying it back.
It was quite amusing to know… to make Dumbledore feel as if he is plotting some master game plan. As if he is the puppet master.
The old man also really did not want Bathsheda Babbling to come into any kind contact with Harry.
"Harry," Dumbledore said keeping his voice as gentle as he could. "Trust me… Arithmancy is far better subject for you."
"No…" was the only thing Harry said.
Dumbledore narrowed his eyes, "Very well… but you need to pass the test, you remember?"
Harry nodded and Dumbledore said, "Good…"
Harry knew that Dumbledore was going to make sure that he never passed the test. But little did he know that Harry was even more knowledgeable than that old man himself.
But was Harry going to use that knowledge? No… if Dumbledore wanted this, then he was going to put on another show for the old man.
"Can I leave now, headmaster?" Harry asked.
"Yes," Dumbledore replied. "But there is one thing more, I wanted to discuss with you."
"About the friendship between you and Miss. Greengrass," Dumbledore added.
