Chapter 415: Chapter 415: Fierce Battle
The effectiveness of the catapults was quite evident.
Due to the catapults' lack of precision, about half of the stone projectiles didn't land inside Stormwind but instead struck the ground in front of the city or hit the city walls directly.
Nevertheless, the heavy stones still created one deep crater after another on the ground and the walls.
Fortunately, the soldiers had already taken cover at the base of the walls, so these stones did not cause them any casualties.
However, the powerful deterrent of the stones genuinely frightened the defending soldiers.
Every stone that hit the battlements sent tremors through the soldiers, and the flying debris constantly reminded them of the terrifying power of these projectiles.
If anyone were unfortunate enough to be struck, they would surely be reduced to a pulp.
Compared to the city walls, the damage caused by the stones to the buildings inside was even more severe.
The stones that flew over the walls inflicted tremendous damage on the nearby homes. If a normal building was hit, it would inevitably collapse, and the flaming incendiaries ignited fierce fires within the city, quickly engulfing many wooden structures.
If most of the buildings in Stormwind hadn't been made of stone, the spread of the fire would have posed a major problem for the city's defenders.
Fortunately, thanks to prior knowledge of the catapults' presence, the residences near the walls had been evacuated before the battle began, so this wave of attack did not result in many casualties.
However, the Twilight Hammer's offensive was far from over.
As the orc laborers began transporting ammunition to prepare for the second round of stone attacks, the Twilight Hammer's army also started to stir, moving toward the base of the towers.
The presence of the catapults effectively suppressed the defending troops on the walls, preventing them from exposing themselves to inflict damage on the attacking soldiers, allowing the infantry to close in on the walls under the cover of the catapults.
The nature of the battle suddenly grew dire.
With terrifying stones flying overhead and a dense wave of enemies surging beneath them, how could the defenders of Stormwind withstand this?
At that moment, King Llane stepped forward.
It must be said that Llane was indeed an excellent king.
In this critical situation, when the soldiers' morale was low, he decisively donned his armor and personally braved the danger to ascend the battlements.
"My bravest soldiers, I am your king," Llane called out, his booming voice capturing the soldiers' attention.
"Throughout history, the kingdom of Stormwind has never known true peace. Our ancestors crossed the sea from the continent of Lordaeron to establish our home here.
We fought against the trolls of the Gurubashi, we battled the worgen of Elwynn Forest, and it was through each war that we expanded our territory, building this great nation, with your contributions among them."
As he spoke, the soldiers recalled the glorious battles of the past, puffing out their chests with pride.
"Yet now, the kingdom of Stormwind faces invasion. Our foes are the brutal orcs, who slaughter our people like pigs and dogs, burning our pastures and seizing our farmland.
Now they wish to invade Stormwind, our last hope, to butcher our loved ones.
So now, I need you to stand once again. I need you to hold the battlements against those green-skinned monsters because our wives and children are behind you.
You are the last hope of Stormwind."
Varian's words made the soldiers truly understand their duty, realizing they must sacrifice for their home.
Drawing his sword, Varian raised it high.
"I am fortunate to have a brave group of soldiers like you. I, your king, will stand with you, facing the enemy together, raising our swords against them.
You may die tonight, or perhaps tomorrow, in this damned war. But it doesn't matter, for we will use our lives to build the strongest fortress for our wives and children behind us.
For the kingdom of Stormwind!"
"For the kingdom of Stormwind!"
The soldiers shouted the slogan alongside Varian.
Llane's speech stirred the soldiers, filling them with courage, and the fear they had felt in the face of the orcs gradually vanished.
Though the catapults remained terrifying and the orcs still fierce, they no longer felt fear, for they fought for themselves, for their families.
As the Twilight Hammer soldiers drew closer to the walls, the catapults increased their range, and the walls gradually became less of a target for them.
The human soldiers began to peek over the walls, bringing forth the logs and stones they had prepared, ready for use at any moment.
Like the humans' siege efforts, the orcs set up ladders beneath the walls, with Twilight Hammer warriors climbing up the ladders in succession, launching an attack on the battlements.
The defenders, unwilling to be outdone, dropped logs and stones down onto the orc soldiers.
The high city walls gave the falling logs and stones tremendous potential energy, and even the strongest orcs and the larger ogres had no means of defense against these aerial projectiles.
Many eager orcs and ogres were struck dead, tumbling from the ladders and falling in a heap of flesh.
Others, less fortunate, were hit, suffering grievous injuries as bones shattered and skin tore.
However, even such horrific scenes did little to diminish the offensive of the orc horde.
On the contrary, the blood of the fallen stirred their hidden bloodlust, making them even more frenzied as they howled and rushed up the ladders toward the battlements.
Before long, orcs managed to break through the barrage of projectiles, scaling the ladders and reaching the battlements.
But before they could even secure their footing, several sharp swords thrust through, dismembering them.
Sadly, once an orc managed to climb onto the walls, more would follow.
Though the first batch of "lucky ones" who ascended the walls were immediately dealt with by the defending soldiers, more and more reinforcements followed, quickly overwhelming the defenders.
In this manner, the orcs and ogres could leverage their individual strength to secure a foothold on the walls.
Before long, several breaches appeared on the battlements, with powerful orcs establishing a foothold and attempting to expand their advantage.
Faced with this situation, the defending soldiers did not feel fear; instead, disregarding the disparity in strength, they charged toward the orcs, vowing to reclaim the battlements and suppress them.
In an instant, the narrow walls became a grinding stone of flesh, with countless warriors from both sides fighting for their lives, the ground piled high with corpses.
