Chapter 31: The Dark Legacy of Slytherin
"Explain, gentlemen," Hermione said as she gazed at their faces.
"What do you mean?" Ron asked, looking slightly alarmed.
"Professor Snape is right, you weren't telling the truth," Hermione stated. "First, Ron, you were in the bathroom when Filch's cat was attacked just outside the door."
"Why do you mistrust me?"
"Don't be foolish, Ron," Hermione said. "Dumbledore mentioned it was an advanced curse that we couldn't cast, I want to ask you, did you notice anything unusual?"
"I just spoke with Evan about this, I think I heard a hiss, but I'm not sure, Myrtle was crying too loudly," Ron pondered.
"Maybe that's a clue," Hermione turned her head to Harry and said, "Harry, can you tell me what you heard at that moment?"
"The voice said it was hungry, it wanted to kill, it was like a ghost moving from one floor of the castle to another," Harry whispered. "Then we saw Filch's cat petrified on the wall, so it must have been the owner of the voice."
"But who or what was it, I didn't hear anything at that moment?" Hermione frowned.
"Who knows," Harry doubted. "Do you think I should inform the professors about the sounds I heard?"
"I wouldn't do it! It's not a good sign to hear voices, even in the magical world," Ron replied without much thought.
"Do you believe me, right?" Harry asked Ron.
"Yes, I believe you, but you have to admit it's strange," Ron quickly responded.
"I know it's strange," Harry said. "The whole thing is strange, you hear a hissing sound in the bathroom, and then Filch's cat is attacked. What did the words on the wall mean?"
"Maybe we should consider it from another angle, the cat was attacked, but who would be pleased with that?" Ron stated.
"Except for Filch, everyone else would be pleased," Harry replied after contemplating. "And how does it connect to the Chamber of Secrets?"
"I mean who would be ecstatic about it, or who hates the cat the most," Ron added.
"I think it might have information about the Chamber of Secrets," Evan said, realizing that Hermione was not engaging in Harry and Ron's discussions but rather kept staring at him, so he had to tell them something.
Upon hearing his words, Harry and Ron turned to Evan, looking at him in astonishment.
"Have you read Hogwarts: A History?"
"No," Harry and Ron shook their heads.
"Evan, are you suggesting...?" Hermione seemed to recall something.
"Yes, it should be the secret chamber that Salazar Slytherin left behind. It's well known that Hogwarts was founded by Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Salazar Slytherin, initially working together, but eventually a rift formed between Slytherin and the others.
"Slytherin wanted to be more selective about the students coming to Hogwarts. He was not willing to accept students born of Muggles. After a few years, Slytherin and Gryffindor had a dispute that led Slytherin to leave the school, but he left a secret chamber in the school which the other founders knew nothing about."
"The Chamber of Secrets?"
"Yes," Evan nodded. "But Slytherin sealed the Chamber so that no one could open it until his heir arrived at the school. Only the heir can open the Chamber of Secrets, unleashing the horror."
The dark classroom suddenly became unusually quiet, and the atmosphere was almost unbearably tense.
The three, Harry, Ron, and Hermione, who remained silent, waited for Evan to continue.
"The story is over," Evan whispered after a while.
"But what is the horror in the Chamber of Secrets?" Hermione quickly inquired.
"I don't know," Evan replied. "It might be some kind of monster that only Slytherin's heir can control."
"Well, it's very consistent with Slytherin's style, I already knew Salazar Slytherin was an old lunatic, but now that I know he came up with this pure-blood nonsense, I wouldn't visit his house even if he paid me," Ron said. "To be honest, if the Sorting Hat had placed me in Slytherin, I would have taken the train back home."
"Wait!" Hermione suddenly interjected, "Consider the words on the wall, the chamber was opened by its heir, and Harry just heard a strange voice, and found Filch's cat petrified on the wall, so..."
She didn't continue; the other three already knew what she meant.
"It's impossible for Harry to be the heir. If I may say so, the successor must be Malfoy. They are all pure-blood, so perhaps he is a descendant of Salazar Slytherin," Ron said.
"Hermione, Harry has been with us all night; he wouldn't have had time to do this," Evan stated.
"I know, but it's a little odd that he can hear voices that we can't," Hermione said, turning her gaze back to Evan, "And you haven't explained why you've been trying to enter Myrtle's bathroom recently."
Seeing the way they looked at him, he didn't want them to think he was trying to spy in the girls' bathroom, especially the one where Moaning Myrtle haunted.
"Well, to be honest, I have more information about the Chamber of Secrets," Evan said bitterly.
"What is it?" the three asked in unison.
"You know, to prepare articles for the history section of the newspaper, I review Hogwarts events chronologically," Evan explained, "I saw in a book a newspaper clipping stating that about 50 years ago, the Chamber of Secrets was opened."
"What? Who opened it?"
"I don't know, it wasn't written," Evan shrugged, "It mentioned that a girl named Myrtle Warren died due to an accident, but I'm not sure if her death was related to the Chamber of Secrets, but the girl is..."
Evan pulled out a yellowed newspaper from his pocket, showing them a picture of the girl.
"It's... Moaning Myrtle!"
"Yes, that's her," Evan confirmed immediately, "I just wanted to ask her if she had noticed anything."
