Chapter 23: Clash of Houses
Evan's Hogsmeade outing did not unfold as smoothly as he had anticipated; businesses were reluctant to invest in a dark newspaper they had never heard of.
Through Evan's persistent efforts to persuade them, however, some businesses eventually agreed to sponsor the newspaper.
For instance, Honeydukes bestowed upon him two large tins of Chocolate Cauldrons they couldn't sell, Zonko's Joke Shop owner gifted him a plethora of Stink Bombs, and The Three Broomsticks offered him a complimentary glass of lemonade.
The proprietor of The Three Broomsticks jestingly remarked, "Kids can't drink, so here's some lemonade for you!"
"Well, nothing worth having comes easy at first, but some progress is better than none," Evan consoled himself. After sipping the lemonade, he loaded a huge pile of merchandise through the long, narrow secret passage and made his way back to Hogwarts.
Upon his return to Hogwarts, he noticed Slytherin and Gryffindor students engaged in an intense discussion on the Quidditch field.
Draco Malfoy stood at the center of the crowd, appearing to have said something disparaging to Hermione, with Fred and George poised to lunge at him, while Ron glared at Malfoy, brandishing his broken wand.
"You'll pay for what you said," Ron shouted.
In the next moment, a loud explosion echoed across the field, a green spell shot from Ron's wand, striking him in the abdomen and knocking him to the ground.
"Ron, Ron! Are you all right?" Hermione cried out.
Ron attempted to reply but instead of words, he expelled slugs that splattered onto the ground.
Slytherin team players couldn't contain their laughter, their captain Flint turning red from hysterics. Malfoy fell to the ground, overcome by laughter at Ron's misfortune. The Gryffindor team surrounded Ron, who continued to vomit slugs.
Hurriedly approaching the commotion, Evan was greeted by Colin's ecstatic voice, "You're back, Evan, Ron was hit by his own spell. Harry, can you help him?"
Excitedly, Colin raised his camera, aiming it at Harry.
Evan drew his wand and cast the "silentium" spell on Ron, but it failed, resulting in Ron vomiting another batch of slugs.
"Look at the filthy little mudblood," Malfoy sneered disdainfully at Evan, "look at your pitiful magic."
"Yes, Malfoy," Evan retorted coldly, pointing his wand at him, conjuring a red light at its tip.
Instantly, Malfoy was struck by Evan's spell.
"Damn you, how dare you...?" The smiles on the Slytherin students' faces vanished instantly as they glared coldly at Evan, several seniors swiftly drawing their wands.
Soon, more and more Slytherin students aimed their wands at Evan, while Gryffindor students brandished their wands, tension reaching its peak.
"You filthy mudblood, I'll kill you!" Malfoy shouted as he rose from the ground, retrieving his wand, "Clumsy fool!"
It seemed to be a trigger that heightened tensions on both sides; Gryffindor and Slytherin recited their own incantations, and the Quidditch stadium transformed into a battlefield.
Spectators who were initially seated in the stands rushed onto the field, further escalating the chaos. Observing the turmoil, several Hufflepuff students turned towards the castle and ran.
On the field, Evan became the primary target of Slytherin.
After narrowly evading three spells, he realized he was too slow to...
By hurling a Stink Bomb, he only hit Slytherin students, disrupting their spells; the stench accompanied by Slytherin's cries.
Malfoy was his main target, hence now he is covered in manure.
"Well done, Evan!" Fred and George applauded.
It didn't take long before Evan managed to disarm the Slytherins and engage in primal combat with their nearest enemies.
The Slytherin students seized the moment, as nobody wanted to be near the manure-covered Slytherins, depriving the Gryffindors of engaging with them.
Evan came face to face with one of Malfoy's roommates, Blaine Zabini; soon, they were grappling, resulting in Evan's lips splitting and blood starting to flow.
Evan wouldn't let the other get away with it; he landed a few blows on Zabini, and just as he was about to finish him off, a large hand abruptly separated the two.
Evan lifted his head and realized it was Hagrid.
"My word, what are all of you doing?" Hagrid exclaimed with a surprised expression.
Not far off, Harry and Malfoy were in a scuffle, Ron was still spitting slugs at Goyle, Hermione was skirmishing all around but still holding her wand; Colin and Neville were fighting Crabbe together, while Quidditch players were locked in combat.
As for Fred and George, they somehow procured more Dungbombs and hurled them at the Slytherin students.
A few moments later, a loud noise echoed throughout the Quidditch field. Nearly all the professors rushed out. Dumbledore stood there, his wand held high.
"Group fights, I've been at Hogwarts for so many years, yet I have never seen anything like this before," Professor McGonagall remarked with a hint of bewilderment. "Gryffindor and Slytherin lose a hundred points each, and if this happens again, I will cancel your Quidditch match."
"But professor..." Gryffindor Quidditch Captain Oliver Wood quickly interjected.
"Silence, Wood! I expected better of you," Professor McGonagall said with a disappointed expression.
"Who started this?" Professor Snape inquired while looking at Harry and Evan, who stood beside him.
"It was Evan Masson and Harry Potter," almost all the Slytherin students claimed, pointing at the two.
"They are lying, Malfoy was the one who initiated it all!" Gryffindor students retorted.
"He called Evan and Hermione mudblood!" Ron exclaimed, still vomiting slugs.
"Quiet, Weasley! I can tell who's lying." Snape gazed at Harry and Evan, "And as for you..."
"Severus, I believe they are students of my house, so I will decide how to punish them," Professor McGonagall declared.
