Chapter 22: The Pressure of Progress
Luna's words helped to shift Evan's mindset, and after breakfast, he began to see the bright side of things.
Harry returned the parchment and agreed to let Evan publish the article in the newspaper. Evan noticed the parchment was tear-stained; it must have been a tough night for him.
At least, Gryffindor never lacked the courage to face adversities.
Harry quickly recovered and thanked Evan for informing him of the details of his parents' death. Evan handed Harry Bathilda Bagshot's response.
After Herbology class, Evan followed the first years to the Flying class.
Having spent the summer at the Weasley's house, he had learned to fly on a broom, but Evan had a strong fear of flying. After confiding in Madam Hooch, she instructed him to stay on the sidelines.
This agitated the Slytherins, as they wanted to teach Evan a lesson based on the rivalry between the two houses.
But now they had no opportunity, so they had to find another Gryffindor, directing their gaze at Colin, but Evan's classmate, Vicky Frobisher, did not allow it.
They fought on their brooms, leading to a comical ending; in addition to Evan, all the new students from Gryffindor and Slytherin were severely reprimanded by Madam Hooch and docked five points.
After seeing Frobisher, he thought of recommending her to join the Quidditch team as a goalkeeper.
However, he didn't have the energy to pursue it as the newspaper deadline loomed.
Hermione had now replaced Snape as the most fearsome person in Evan's opinion.
In the following days, under Hermione's supervision, he spent almost all his time in the library. They both reviewed and revised all the manuscripts, so he had to finish his tasks after 10 p.m.
While Harry and Ron complained that Hermione wouldn't share her tasks with them, after she glared at them, they fell silent.
In comparison to Evan, they were fortunate to be working alone on an article about Hogwarts Quidditch.
Everyone was busy preparing the manuscripts, but Hermione was still dissatisfied with the academic section.
"Evan, we've only received two submissions so far," Hermione said, looking at the two manuscripts. "One is from Percy, 'The Present and History of the Cauldron,' and the other is 'How to Find a Crumple-Horned Snorkack.'"
"If there's no other choice, let's work on Luna's article first," Evan said, pausing in his writing, "Her father works at a magazine that publishes these types of articles, and I've heard that sales are good, so there are people who enjoy seeing these kinds of things."
"Agreed?" Hermione said with a doubtful tone.
The magical newspaper of Hogwarts, nearly finished in his opinion, was no better than The Quibbler.
It did not possess the quality he envisioned, as the quality of the manuscripts was very low.
Page three featured interesting Hogwarts news of the week, but was limited by the source of the articles, mostly from Gryffindor students.
Evan, Harry, and Ron flying in a car to school graced the cover. Only a few things related to Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff, with almost no news about Slytherin apart from Malfoy provoking people on various occasions.
Then, there was an article about young wizards' safety taking up five pages, filled with legal terms; Evan wasn't sure if anyone would read it.
He believed that Hermione's articles would be overlooked by most young wizards.
Regarding Fred and George's articles, they covered the Grand Staircase and frequently used secret passageways, which could assist some new students and attract some readers.
They must have omitted a lot because with these secret passages, it would be impossible to escape from Filch, who was familiar with the secret passages.
Ginny assisted Hagrid with his piece on magical creatures, Harry and Ron wrote about Quidditch, in Evan's opinion, nothing notable was found to highlight.
And Luna's article for the academic section "How to Find a Crumple-Horned Snorkack".
"Apparently, the story I wrote about Lily will be highlighted," thought Evan as he turned the newspaper, and what he saw next were over ten pages of photos of Lockhart.
Lockhart in class, Lockhart grading papers, Lockhart at dinner, Lockhart waving his wand, Lockhart assisting other professors, Lockhart in...
Lockhart's smile was everywhere, making Evan feel a bit queasy.
Following the photos, there was Hermione's article about Lockhart.
Under Hermione's description of Lockhart, he seemed more magnificent than Dumbledore.
After that was Lockhart's story. Since Lockhart announced to the class that he would publish a story in the newspaper, the girls in the class flocked to him wanting to preview the content.
Although not ideal, Evan had to admit that the success of the first issue of the Hogwarts Magic newspaper depended entirely on Lockhart's charisma.
"We're almost done, it seems everyone gave their best!"
Evan set the newspaper aside and turned to Hermione, saying, "I'm going to Hogsmeade on Saturday to talk to the businesses there."
"Hogsmeade, only third-year students can go and only on a specific Saturday," said Hermione seriously, "And you need a parent or guardian's signature."
"I don't need it, Hermione," Evan replied, "I learned from Fred and George that there is a secret passage to Hogsmeade."
"Secret passage," Hermione said, shaking her head, "If you're caught, you'll be expelled."
"As long as you don't tell anyone, no one will know. We need advertising and sponsorships, or we won't have enough money to print a single issue of the newspaper, you know that ink and paper are not cheap."
"But..."
"Don't worry, Hermione!" Evan laughed, "I remember that Saturday is Gryffindor's first Quidditch match, I'll be back before it ends to cheer on Harry!"
