Chapter 102: Chapter 102 - Disaster Class
After entering the gym, the Karasuno players gathered in one spot and began stretching before the first match.
"Alright, everyone, you all want to try something different that you've been training for the past few days, so I'll be switching players constantly. Be prepared and make the most of every moment you're on the court! And remember to use the synchronized attacks!" Ukai warned as the players stretched.
"Yes!" everyone shouted in unison.
"Looks like we're playing against Fukurodani right off the bat again..." Kageyama observed.
"Oh no, we're going to get targeted by their number four again, since Tsukishima can't stop him!" Tanaka teased with a grin.
"Tsk! Shut up! It's not like their blocks don't stop all your attacks every time!" Tsukishima shot back.
"Wow, we're already arguing and the match hasn't even started... Are we speedrunning a loss here?" Hinata said, shrugging casually.
"Tanaka and Tsukishima, stop fighting! And Hinata, you're our Ace and you're talking about losing all the time... If you don't believe we can win, nothing will work out!" Daichi scolded, getting everyone's attention.
"Sorry, sorry!" Hinata said, smiling.
"Let's get started!" Daichi declared, leading the Karasuno players onto the court.
"STRONG SERVE, SARUKUI!" Bokuto shouted as he watched Sarukui serve toward Karasuno's court.
"It's mine!" Daichi said, moving toward the ball and receiving it smoothly, directing the pass to Kageyama.
"What we agreed on was that the first attack would be a synchronized one..." Kageyama thought as he looked back and saw all the Karasuno players running in sync. Kageyama then set the ball, which went past Tanaka, who, without waiting, spiked it.
"Let's go!" Bokuto said, jumping up alongside Washio and Konoha. As they reached the peak of their jump, Tanaka spiked the ball right into Bokuto's hands, who managed to block the attack and send the ball back to Karasuno's court.
1-0 Fukurodani.
"HEY, TANAKA YOU IDIOT! YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO LET THE BALL GO! IT WAS FOR HINATA AT THE BACK OF THE COURT!" Ukai yelled from the bench.
"Oh? I FORGOT!" Tanaka replied with a mischievous smile.
"Was that supposed to be a synchronized attack like Shinzen's?" Bokuto asked, confused by Karasuno's attack.
"Well, they all started running at the same time, trying to look synchronized, but it seems like they're not very well-defined or practiced..." Akaashi observed.
Next, Sarukui served toward Karasuno's court again, this time in Nishinoya's direction, who also received it without any issues.
"Again!" Daichi shouted as the Karasuno players began running in sync once more.
"Alright, here we go," Kageyama thought as he set the ball, which went past Tanaka, who this time faked a spike but let the ball go, directing it toward Asahi. Asahi saw the ball coming his way and, to put his new weapon into practice, tried to delay his timing by jumping later.
"WAIT, IS THAT A TIMING-SHIFT ATTACK?!" Bokuto said, slightly shocked, as he had already jumped alongside Washio and Konoha, who didn't expect Asahi to try something like that.
"This is my chance!" Asahi thought as he saw the block falling for his bait and jumped to spike the ball.
"Darn it..." Asahi thought as he jumped, realizing he had waited too long and the ball was already falling toward him at net height, making it impossible to spike properly.
"It's gonna have to be this..." Asahi thought as he tapped the ball from below, executing a feint that went over the net and past Fukurodani's block, which had jumped again but watched the ball go over their heads.
"I'VE GOT IT!" Komi shouted as he dove toward the spot where the ball was going to land, putting his hand between the floor and the ball to prevent Asahi from scoring. Asahi didn't execute the attack as he wanted, but he managed to work around the mistake.
"Nice receive, Senpai!" Akaashi praised after seeing Komi's effort to prevent Karasuno from scoring.
"Akaashi, send it to me!" Bokuto shouted.
"It's yours!" Akaashi said as he set the ball to Bokuto in position four, who looked at the ball and then ran and jumped, facing a triple block from Tanaka, Asahi, and Kageyama.
"TAKE THIS!" Bokuto shouted as he spiked the ball with force, managing to get it past Tanaka's arms and into Karasuno's court.
"It's mine... Darn it!" Daichi said as he moved toward Bokuto's attack to try to receive it, but the ball ended up hitting his wrist and flying to the other side of Karasuno's defense zone.
"NOW IT'S MY TURN!" Nishinoya shouted energetically as he jumped to try to save the play with his own set.
"WHAT? Karasuno's libero is trying to set!" Kuroo observed from the sidelines.
"Wow, they didn't try that last time!" Yaku noted, now even more interested, but he ended up feeling a huge letdown when he saw Nishinoya jump at the wrong timing, missing the ball before it was at a good height for a set, and the ball fell to Karasuno's floor.
2-0 Fukurodani.
"IT WENT WRONG!" Nishinoya commented, laughing out loud as he realized his mistake.
After Nishinoya's failed set attempt, Sarukui served again.
"This one's mine!" Hinata called as he moved toward the ball and received it, directing the pass to Kageyama. He then signaled that he was going to run and wanted the set.
"MAKE SURE YOU GET IT RIGHT THIS TIME!" Kageyama said, slightly irritated, as he set the ball from the back of the court to Hinata, who jumped and went through his circular swing mechanics in his mind. After jumping, he faced the same triple block from Fukurodani, but this time he managed to execute the spike correctly, hitting the ball firmly past Bokuto's arms and making the ball explode on the opponent's court.
"THAT'S IT!" Hinata said, celebrating with his teammates.
"Wow, that spike was really powerful!" Bokuto observed, noticing the strength of Hinata's hit.
"I'm not sure exactly what he changed, but it was definitely different from his previous attacks," Akaashi analyzed.
After Hinata's point, Kageyama served toward Fukurodani's court. After receiving the serve, they tried an attack with Konoha, which was stopped by Hinata, who attempted the same attack, filling the spectators with anticipation. However, they were immediately disappointed when they saw Hinata hit nothing but air.
"Looks like Karasuno is really testing new things..." Bokuto observed after the match ended 25-16 in Fukurodani's favor.
"Yeah, they made a lot of mistakes," Akaashi noted.
"It was a total disaster!" Komi declared.
