Chapter 17: 17. Growth
Four years later...
The training yard at Storm's End was alive with the clash of wooden swords. Stannon Baratheon, now eleven years old, faced off against ten-year-old Jon Snow. A small crowd of knights and onlookers watched the match under the warm midday sun.
Stannon stood taller then before, his black hair damp with sweat. Though he had not been trained by knights like Ser Barristan Selmy, he had spent years under the guidance of Winterfell's knights and occasionally Lord Eddard Stark himself. His strikes were sharp, his movements were precise, showing the results of relentless cop... training.
Across from him, Jon Snow gripped his wooden sword tightly, a competitive spark in his eyes. Though he was younger and a bit smaller, Jon's focus never wavered and neither was he afraid to fight a opponent stronger than him. As the illegitimate son of Eddard Stark, he had always worked harder to prove himself time and again.
Stannon raised his sword, smiled. "Ready, Jon? Or are you already tired?"
Jon adjusted his stance, his voice calm but respectful. "I'm ready, Your Grace. Let's begin."
Stannon lunged first, his wooden blade coming down in a clean arc aimed at Jon's shoulder. Jon reacted quickly, raising his sword to block the strik. The force of the blow pushed Jon back a step, but he held his ground.
"You've got decent reflexes," Stannon said, circling to Jon's left. "But you're still too slow, Jon."
Jon tightened his grip on his sword, his eyes never leaving Stannon. "I'll keep that in mind, Your Grace."
Stannon attacked again, this time with a series of quick, controlled strikes aimed at Jon's sides and legs. Jon struggled to keep up, parrying each blow with effort. The sound of their swords clashing sounded across the yard. Sweat rolled down Jon's face as he worked to block another swing aimed at his shoulder.
"Watch your right side," Stannon said with a grin. "You're leaving it wide open."
Jon shifted his stance slightly, trying to close the gap in his defense. He gritted his teeth, focusing hard.
The fight continued, their movements becoming faster and more intense. Stannon swung his sword low, aiming for Jon's legs, but Jon jumped back just in time to avoid the strike. Taking the opportunity, Jon countered with a quick thrust toward Stannon's midsection.
Stannon sidestepped the attack with ease, and threw a taunting look at Jon.
Jon's face flushed, but he didn't give up. He stepped forward, feinting to the left before aiming a strike at Stannon's shoulder. Stannon raised his sword to block it, their blades locking together for a moment.
"You're learning," Stannon said as he pushed Jon back with a strong shove. "But you still hesitate, and that's why you're losing."
Jon lunged forward again, his sword aimed low. Stannon saw the move coming and blocked it, spinning around to tap Jon lightly on the shoulder with his blade.
Jon winced, stepping back to catch his breath. His muscles ached, but he refused to stop. He looked up at Stannon, his voice steady despite his exhaustion. "Again, Your Grace," he said firmly.
The fight resumed, and the intensity only grew. Stannon moved with precision and confidence, his strikes quick and calculated. Jon pushed himself harder, blocking each blow with everything he had. The sound of their swords clashing filled the yard as the onlookers watched intently.
Jon tried his best to catch Stannon off guard. Feinting to the right, he swung his sword low and almost landed a light hit on Stannon's side. The crowd murmured in approval at Jon's effort.
Stannon smiled at Jon, brushing his damp black hair away from his face. "Not bad, Jon," he said. "You're getting better."
Jon gave a small, tired smile, his entire body heaving with exhaustion. "Thank you, Your Grace," he replied, his tone respectful. "It's only because you went easy on me."
Stannon laughed, resting his sword on his shoulder. "I didn't go easy on you, Jon. You've improved, that's all."
Jon shook his head, still catching his breath. "Your Grace, you know I can't keep up with you. I'm just not there yet."
Stannon's smile softened. "You'll get there. You just need more practice. We'll spar again in the evening."
Jon nodded, lowering his sword. "Thank you for your time, Your Grace. I appreciate it."
Stannon let out a deep breath. It was very hard for him to tone down his swordsmanship in order to not defeat Jon instantly. His swordsmanship had levelled quite a bit in the past four years with both copying and training it.
But still he didn't reveal his exact mastery in the swordsmanship, trying to show only what is needed. And even that was enough for the people of Winterfell to call him a talented genius.
After all, there were times when hiding a bit of his power was just as important as showing it. It could throw enemies off balance, lead them to underestimate him, and give him an edge when it mattered most. Sometimes, it was better to keep certain strengths hidden, not just for strategy but for survival.
Both Stannon and Jon went to their rooms after the sparring session. Jon, exhausted, headed directly to his quarters to rest.
While Stannon, walked towards the bath. The cool stone floor under his feet helped him relax after the intense sparring.
The cold water of the bath was refreshing. He was worried whether he would be able to have cold baths in Winterfell but his Iron Hide ability came forward has a saviour, keeping him from feeling too cold during the cold baths.
He enjoyed the bath for almost an hour without discomfort. Afterward, he dried off and changed into a fresh set of clothes thinking about how fast the four years went by.
Also Bran had finally been born, and Stannon had tried using his system on him, but it hadn't generated any abilities or skills. But he didn't mind. He knew that he could still copy his abilities and skills in the future.
Meanwhile, Ned and Robb had gone out hunting for a few days as a present for his tenth name day.
Stannon sat on his bed and opened his system panel. He checked the progress of his abilities and skills, all of which he had been working on for years.

Stannon smiled as he looked at his system panel, feeling proud of his progress. From what he had seen, most people in Winterfell with skills like his were between 15 and 17 years old. Yet, at just 11 years old, he had already reached this level. Of course certain geniuses were exception to this trend.
The system had given him a lot of power, and he was amazed by how much it had helped him grow. And this was just looking at his skills, not even considering his special abilities.
He focused on the Poison Resistance skill, which had reached a four-star rank. Stannon had been careful with this one. While he wasn't afraid of dying in battle, he feared being poisoned. In a safe place like Winterfell, there was still a chance someone could poison him, so he made sure to focus on strengthening this skill.
Looking at his other abilities and skills, Stannon felt proud of how far he had come. The system had truly been more powerful than he expected. After deleting the boxing skill, he had added new skills and abilities and improved his strength even more.
However, currently, Stannon's system was on cooldown. He had copied two rank ★★★ abilities in the past year, and the cooldown was still a year away from being completed. While the wait was long, Stannon knew that the abilities he had already acquired would continue to make him stronger as they leveled up.
Just as Stannon was thinking about his progress, there was a knock at the door.
A voice called out from outside, "My prince, I have a letter for you from His Grace, King Robert Baratheon."
