Fortune Favors The Prepared

Chapter 7: Chapter 7

So it turns out that there is a reason why a lot of these things were pawned off; low quality. They could barely hold more than one enchantment without breaking down. It was a miracle my impromptu storage ring didn't crumble the moment I put it on. I guess that's where my lucky streak ends.

Suddenly, I don't feel bad for robbing the store because despite the fact that I got a lot of loot, a large majority of them were useless. I did figure something out though.

Skipping the step of adding an energy source and letting them draw directly from my reserves lowered the need for quality materials just a bit but that isn't practical enough for me.

I've had to use the mending wand I made much earlier to repair some of them after they broke down. It turns out I've lucked out up until now. That and the fact that recently I mostly stuck to placing single enchantments on items.

This only highlights my need for a forge. I'm honestly just considering using the one here at Beacon but I want to keep my options open.

Putting aside my fruitless labor in the form of a shattered pendant, I let out an exasperated sigh. The only good thing that came out of this escapade were a pair of gloves.

Normal gloves which I had rechristened 'Metal Sculptors'. They had only one enchantment and that was the ability to mold metal like clay. A lot of the useless items made of metal were melded together to form a blob of metal waiting for me to make use of it.

The gems from the items that had them were stored for later use. At least they wouldn't be completely useless.

Still, it wasn't as bad as I initially thought. Why? That's because with my metal sculpting gloves, my Artistry skills and the blob of metal, I was able to craft a sling ring.

During the molding process, I invested some aura to increase the metal's durability. It turns out that I could do that multiple times and drastically increase the quality of the metal.

We learn new things everyday. I couldn't help the smile that was on my face the whole time as I imbued the enchantment, giving it a source of energy to draw from and the ability to open portals.

Now, with this wonderful piece of art, transportation has become much easier. Who needed cars? Well, I'd still like to have one but I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

Before I could test it out, a knock at my door drew my attention. Now who could that be?

-[Emerald]-

This place made her uncomfortable. To be more accurate, the people here made her uncomfortable. How could they all be so happy all the time?! It was sickening.

Still, she'd endure it for Cinder, the woman who had saved her from the streets. She owed her life to her and she would do anything for her, hence why she was going along with this.

Mercury…she didn't exactly like him but she could tolerate him. It was mostly because she didn't know why he was following Cinder. With a background like his, she expected him to ditch them the moment he had the chance.

His sarcasm and crude jokes weren't as charming as he believed.

Still, between them, she was the one who knew Cinder the most. Hence why she was surprised when Cinder came back with news about the failed operation on mountain Glenn.

The person who ruined Cinder's plan was here at beacon and Cinder had met him. What a stroke of luck. For the moment, the plan was to gather all they could on him and see if he would be useful or a threat.

Team RWBY would know more, considering the fact that they were the ones that brought him to beacon.

As Cinder communicated with one of her mystery partners on her scroll to get more information, she couldn't help but notice something odd. She almost missed it but while Cinder seemed fine, there was a glint in her eye that Emerald couldn't quite decipher.

Maybe she was just overthinking it. It was probably nothing.

-[Corvus]-

"I think it's weird how you guys are taking turns for who lugs me around for the day." I said as Yang led me through the hallways.

"You're the one who said you didn't want all of us babysitting you." She pointed out.

"Yes, because four people is a lot for a simple tour around the city. I don't need memories to tell me that much." I shot back, getting an eyeful of the blonde. She was pretty stacked, even more than Cinder.

"How's that going by the way?" She asked with a smirk, noticing my slight ogling.

That's barely going to stop me. "It's slow but it's coming. Turns out I'm good with machines. It's like muscle memory but it's there."

She pauses for a moment before replying. "I've got a bike. You can take a look at it later, see if it jogs any more memories."

I need to tinker, I've realized that. As a former engineering student, I was basically salivating to try my hand at Remnant's technology.

"So you love bikes and she loves weapons, I can see how you two are related." I said, getting a small laugh from the girl. "She's excitable in a cute kind of way but she makes a good tour guide, even if most of the tour was through the weapons section of a gun shop."

We soon reached our destination; the cafeteria. I'd almost forgotten that I needed to eat to keep from raising any eyebrows. It's the kind of cafeteria where you serve yourself and serve, I did. I may not need it but I want it.

We took our trays to a table where the rest of her team were waiting for us.

"Hey Corvus!" Ruby greeted excitedly, alerting Weiss and Blake to our arrival.

"Little red." I returned her greeting as I set my food down on an empty spot which happens to be beside Blake. "Is it always this empty around here?"

"No, most of the students are out shadowing huntsmen. They won't be back for a few days or so." Surprisingly, it was the faunus in disguise that answered my question.

"Ah, I see. Well I guess you guys have me to thank for your little vacation." I hummed, taking a bite from the food. Surprisingly, there wasn't much culinary difference between Remnant and Earth, though the food here is a bit bland.

"I wouldn't exactly call it that. We barely even got to finish the mission." Weiss complained with a small grumble.

"Small victories, Weiss. At least the white fang got caught so it's still a win." Yang said, as upbeat as usual, consoling her white haired partner.

"Yeah, cheer up Weiss!" Ruby agreed, only causing the heiress to let out a sigh. "I still can't believe you survived there for weeks."

That last part was aimed at me, causing me to pause my eating. "Trust me, I can't believe it either. I'm just glad to have a shower and a bed to sleep in."

"So what's next? You're not exactly a student here and you can't remember much…" Weiss asked, trailing off.

"I'll figure something out." Either that or Ozpin will figure something out for me and for a man whose kingdom is at the pinnacle of technology, Ironwood's scroll is quite easy to gain access to.

The general has been demanding that I be brought in and questioned. On another note, Adam is in Vale. I'm guessing it's because a lot of his men either died or were captured but that still doesn't explain what he wants to do.

-[Adam Taurus]-

Landing at the docks in Vale, he could barely hold in his anger. The humans thought they could trample on the faunus, taking them as prisoners. The very thought of it made his blood boil but as angry as he was, he didn't delude himself into thinking he could take on an army.

He just needed to kill one of them, the person responsible for sabotaging the operation and killing his men on the mountain.

Torchwick, the coward that he was, turned tail and vanished without a trace. His pet assassin disappeared with him as well so he couldn't get any answers from them.

Cinder and her posse were the next option. They may be in agreement for the destruction of Vale but he couldn't just overlook the death toll. If this continued, the High Leader of the White Fang , Sienna Khan, would hear of it.

Either they dissolve their partnership or they move up the timetable. The humans of this city needed to be taught their place.

For now, he'd go to one of the white fang hideouts in the city to perform a census and see how many were left. He had the rest of his men at a camp outside the city, ready at any moment to march.

He paused as he heard a gasp behind him. Turning around, his eyes landed on a man who was staring at him with wide eyes. From his attire, he worked at the docks.

As the man turned to run, he unsheathed his blade, the metal glowing red as he struck air, an arc of red flying from the blade and bisecting the man who let out a shriek of terror.

Human lives were nothing to him. He'd put them all in their place.

-[Corvus]-

I've come to a conclusion, the brother gods are complete idiots. They complain about the balance of life and death, yet they had no problem making Salem immortal and Ozma a perpetual reincarnator.

If they had simply done that when Salem came to them, begging them to resurrect Ozma, I don't think humanity would be in the dire state it was now.

Fortunately that was not their last act of stupidity. When they threw their tantrum and left Remnant, fracturing the moon in the process, they neglected to lock up shop.

Salem resides in the land of darkness, using the grimm pools to create more grimm to destroy Remnant. That got me thinking. If the land of darkness still exists, then the domain of light should still exist, right? Grimm wouldn't even be able to go near the place and I doubt Salem has the power to destroy it.

What am I getting at? With my newly crafted sling ring, distance is nothing to me. With a clear image of what I remembered from the show, I was able to open a portal, leading into a small canyon.

The area is filled with golden yellow flowers broken up only by patches of grey rock. Up ahead, in the center of the canyon, is the fountain of life.

Needless to say, I rushed up the path leading to the fountain, uncaring of my clothes and dived in. For a moment, I lost all sense of being before it came back. I don't know how long I need to be in here for it to work but soon I find myself being dragged to the surface.

One moment I was deep in the fountain , the next I was lying on what appeared to be solid ground, coughing out. Opening my eyes, I see that I'm laying on the liquid as if it were solid ground.

Looking down at myself, a golden sheen covered my body for a moment. There's only one way to find out if it worked.

Calling a knife out of my pocket space, I set it on my palm. Either this worked or I'll feel very stupid but what was stupidity in the face of immortality.

Gritting my teeth, I dragged the knife across my palm, making a deep gash. The pain was instant but I held my tongue. Moments later, the wound knitted itself closed, healing as if it was never there.

It's fortunate that nobody was here to witness this or they would have balked in disgust at the cackle that left my throat for the next ten minutes.

Salem is a foolish woman who saw immortality as a curse. For a reincarnator like me whose afterlife isn't uncertain in the event of our another death, it is a blessing.

It feels like I just cheated and I love it.
