Miami, Florida. 2018.
Inside a rundown apartment block in one of the city's poorer neighborhoods, a flickering television screen cast a faint glow across the cramped, dark living room.
In front of it sat an old leather couch, occupied by a boy who looked no older than ten.
His eyes were locked on the images streaming from the local news station.
"On your screen is footage taken by bystanders during yesterday's catastrophic fight in New York City. Reports confirm the altercation was between two individuals, one an unregistered super and the other, a member of the United States Federal Superhuman Task Force. The fight left 17 civilians injured, and is estimated to have caused 1.9 million dollars in damage to local infrastructure."
As the newscaster spoke, various images and videos flashed on-screen, each showcasing the true extent of the damage that had been done.
The street looked like it had turned into a war-zone. Cars flipped over, fires raging all over, multiple damaged buildings. One adjacent apartment building was missing a large chunk of its structure, rubble spilling onto the street below.
The boy, silent until now, finally spoke.
"It's been a month, and I still can't get used to this…," he whispered, absently rubbing his small hands together, remembering how large they used to be.
You see, this boy wasn't actually a 'boy'.
His name was Vin, a twenty-year-old college student who had been living a relatively normal life on Earth.
One night though, after a long day, he had fallen asleep and when he awoke, found himself in this new world.
It looked just like his old one—same cities, same familiar skyline—but beneath that lay the fact that this world has superpowers.
This was something Vin found almost impossible to accept at first, but the undeniable fact that his body had reverted in age helped convince him.
Of course, this was after pinching himself until his arm bruised, after counting every crack in the apartment's ceiling and confirming this was definitely not a dream.
Now, a month later, he'd come to terms with it—mostly. He still flinched at the sound of a passing siren, still expected to see the familiar face he'd once known when he looked in the mirror.
Based on what he'd learned over the past month—and on the hazy memories inherited with this body—this world was home to beings known as supers.
These are human beings who have awakened to some sort of super-power. These can range from something powerful like manipulating fire to something relatively useless like generating dinner plates.
Apparently, approximately 1 percent of the planets population has awakened some sort of ability.
When Vin had originally discovered this information he had been terrified for his life. Seeing news coverage about numerous high scale incidents between supers which resulted in civilian casualties left him feeling scared and hopeless.
His whole life he had lived believing nothing supernatural could ever be real. "Follow the science", he always told himself.
And, now before his very eyes, were things that defied that very truth.
"Though, I guess the saying is true. You can always find fate in misfortune…"
Vin spoke as he glanced at a invisible blue panel that slowly materialized before his eyes.
This was probably the main reason that Vin had managed to keep his sanity after awaking here and learning the nature of this world.
A small, holographic screen, that was only visible to his eyes. On it were shown only a few lines.
Name: Vin
Superpower: Gacha System
Description: Spin the wheel of chance and win a random reward from the vast pool of possibilities. This includes all of reality, all of fiction and everything in between. Spin's may be stacked for a chance at better rewards.
Daily Spin: Available [Use]
Spin's Saved: 30
Use Spin: Use 1 | Use Custom | Use All
Inventory: Quantum Sneeze Counter [Dimension Z-97]
That's right.
His own superpower! A system at that!
It had appeared a few days after he had awoken and after testing the daily spin and receiving something from thin air, he was sure he wasn't hallucinating.
The Quantum Sneeze Counter, as its description states is a device from an alternate universe that automatically tracks and displays the total number of sneezes you've had in your lifetime.
Not that useful but definitely an insane feat of technology.
Vin had tried to test its functionality, but the device was too sophisticated to comprehend and seemed to use an alien language.
Now here he was, sitting on his couch a month later.
He had immediately decided the best strategy was to wait and stack his daily spins. He didn't know how the system judged "better rewards" but his gut told him he wouldn't regret it.
Not to mention, he had the luxury of time. Though the world was dangerous, realistically, his chances of being caught in the middle of a superhuman fight were low.
According to this body's memories—and much like in his previous life—he currently lived with his older brother in a Miami apartment.
He had a few hours before his brother would return from his hospital shift.
Now was the time to see if his patience had paid off.
He had saved up thirty spins, and now his heart thudded with anticipation.
"This has to be enough for something good, right?" Vin muttered to himself.
Not wanting to waste any more time, he thought in his mind, "Use All Spins".
Almost immediately, the holographic panel was replaced by a spinning wheel of fortune that hovered in front of his eyes.
After a few seconds, in a burst of motion—snap, snap, snap—cards materialized from the wheel like bullets from a chamber. Each card floated into place, backs turned toward him, forming a perfect line of thirty.
Vin's eyes flitted across them, scanning all thirty at once. His breath hitched. There was no need for explanation. His instincts told him exactly what to do.
All he had to do was say it.
"Reveal."
The cards flipped in unison, like soldiers turning on command. Rows of vivid symbols, names, and images flooded his vision.
His gaze locked onto the first card directly in front of him.
Scented Bookmark
"...Oh come on," he mumbled, eyes narrowing in annoyance.
He glanced at the next card.
Chopstick of Inner Balance
"Useless…" he muttered, dragging his hand down his face.
But he kept looking. One card after another, each one slowly draining his hope.
A Broken Pokéball
Handwritten List of Superpowers You'll Never Have
Single-Use Emergency Tent
Vin's eye twitched. Single-Use Emergency Tent? He blinked, his stare locked on it as if it had just insulted his entire family.
He exhaled slowly, his face flat with disappointment. Yeah, because a tent is exactly what I need in a world where people shoot lasers from their eyes.
Depressed, his eyes darted to the last few cards.
Then he froze.
No.
No, no, no…
No way.
He leaned forward so quickly he almost toppled off the couch, his breath tangling in his throat. His eyes widened, pupils contracting as if his brain refused to process what he was seeing.
Three cards hovered, standing out like gold among trash.
Zanpakuto (Sealed State)
Infinite Growth (Trait)
Chakra Fruit (Of the God Tree)
His breath came slow and shallow, like he'd stumbled into a minefield and didn't dare move. He blinked once. Then twice. The words didn't change.
His lips parted, dry from the shock. He leaned back on the couch, letting his head fall against the cushions.
He laughed. A quiet, hollow laugh.
"No fucking way…"
The sound of it echoed softly in the empty apartment. His gaze lingered on the words, his mind racing.
He sat there, unmoving for a moment, his face caught somewhere between disbelief and euphoria.
Then slowly, very slowly, his lips curled into a grin.
"Oh, I was so, so right."
