CHAPTER 63: SURVIVE IV
Arlo gasped for air. His throat felt a little sore, but compared to the previous time, it was bearable.
Arlo assumed it was because he had sufficient energy to carry out his command; however, all the energy that Anita sent him was almost used up.
His own Ki reserve was also half-drained.
However, Arlo felt thankful that he didn’t need to supply Anita with Ki to devour the greater demon, as it seemed the Ki she possessed was currently enough.
That was understandable, as no matter how weak Marvin was, it was still the mana he had accumulated all his life. And he suspected she only shared a bit with him.
Arlo sat on his rear as he took in a deep breath. The sounds of explosions coming from deep within the city entered his ears.
The occasional growling sounds echoing around the city also didn’t go unnoticed.
However his attention was drawn toward Anita who engulfed the greater demon, and he couldn’t help but marvel at how his body disintegrated in her, fueling her power.
<< Beside you! >> Arlo didn’t even take an instant to think about it, and he immediately rolled to his side before he leaped to his feet.
The wind seemed to be sliced apart at his previous location.
Looking forward, Arlo's eyes met a pair of bloodlust eyes lacking any form of clarity.
*Growl!* The vampire before him was very different from usual. His eyes were bloodshot, and while he still had two fangs protruding out of his mouth, the liquid that leaked out the sides of his mouth gave him a maniacal look. His arms flailed by his sides, as his long sharp claws made slicing sounds.
<< It is a lesser demon. It has lost all semblance of its sanity. >> Old bro gave a very brief explanation. And before Arlo could digest his words, the lesser demon pounced on him.
His body moved at a very fast speed before it clawed with its right hand. The air seemed to be sliced apart by his attack.
Due to the height difference, Arlo only had to slant his body to the left side, narrowly dodging the attack, and with a clenched right fist, he punched fiercely.
His fist connected with the lesser demon’s abdomen, and even without concentrating his Ki, a fist-sized hole was formed upon impact, before the lesser demon was sent flying onto the wall of the shop.
With a bang, tiny cracks spread out on the wall.
Before Arlo could relax, the lesser demon’s body slid to the ground and he tried to get back on his feet seemingly not feeling any pain. In addition, Arlo’s eyes widened when he saw the hole formed by his previous attack instantly heal up.
<< He can’t use any of his powers as he has lost all semblance of sanity. However because he was a vampire, his body still automatically regenerates on its own. >>
Listening to Old Bro’s words, Arlo immediately sprang into action.
He closed the distance between them as two spinning orbs materialized on his palms.
Holding the orbs as weapons, Arlo smacked the one on his right hand onto the lesser demon's left chest, instantly blasting a hole through it.
Not to his surprise, the flesh at the sides of the opening twitched before they started regenerating.
He didn’t want to wait and see how a heart could be regenerated and smashed his left hand towards the lesser demon’s head.
The orb in his hand spun with a ‘Zing’ sound and Arlo didn’t doubt that if his attack connected, the other party’s head would be blasted apart.
Alas, in the process of attacking, he felt a light movement behind him, and without thinking about it, Arlo swung the orb on his right hand in an upward arc behind him.
*Bang!*
The orb connected with the head of a pouncing lesser demon, before it exploded sending the now headless body flying.
Before Arlo could react, his left arm was grabbed by sharp claws, before two fangs bit into him.
“AAAAAAH!” he screamed out in pain.
The painful sensation made him fall on his rear, yet the lesser demon refused to let go and shifted his body along with him.
Due to the pain, Arlo lost his calm and sent out punches after punches on the lesser demon’s head.
“Let go of me!”
*Bam!*
“I said let go.”
*Bam! Bam!*
“AAAAAH!”
The left side of the demon's head exploded into pieces from Arlo’s assault, its brain now visible. Yet he refused to let go as his mouth made gulping sounds, his bloodlust-shot eyes flashing with excitement.
“AAAAH!” Arlo was in the end a small kid. No matter how intelligent or mature he was for his age, he could not turn a dead eye toward pain even after all his painful experiences.
His attack subsided as painful groans leaked from his mouth.
Who would have thought that he who defeated a greater demon would actually succumb to a lesser demon that wasn’t even in the advanced stage?
As his eyes were slowly sliding into unconsciousness, he saw a shadow appear above the lesser demon’s head.
“Universal devouring!” That was the last thing he heard.
*****
“Arlo!”
“ARlO!” Anita’s panicked voice echoed out.
Normally a summon would disappear after losing their supply of Ki, however after absorbing the greater demon, she was forcefully resisting returning into the seal. She had the energy to sustain herself, but she still had to fight against the pressure that was trying to send her back into the seal.
“Arlo, please wake up.” She watched the bite mark hole on Arlo slowly heal up, and her heart relaxed slightly.
“Ar…” She suddenly realized something wrong.
The entire place was filled with an eerie silence.
The growling sounds echoing around the city seemed to quiet down, with only the sounds of explosions coming from deep within the city remaining.
Like a burst of several fireworks, the growling sounds resumed only that they had increased in frequency and intensity.
What threw Anita into panic was that all the growls seemed to be getting louder.
She bobbed up and down on Arlo’s face as she pleaded, “Arlo, you need to wake. Please, you need to wake up.” She could guess that the sounds were moving towards them probably after getting attracted by the smell of Arlo’s blood.
After all, no matter if they were lesser demons, they were still vampires at their core. And the greatest allure to a vampire was human blood, not to say that Arlo wasn’t a normal human.
She was slowly crumbling under the pressure, as she didn’t know what to do.
As despair slowly bested up in her, an old voice suddenly resounded, << Hey little slime! Can you hold out for a minute? >>
Anita was stunned on the spot, however, OldBroo didn’t have time to waste due to the urgency of the situation.
<< Hey little slime, look at the back of Arlo’s hands. >>
Anita unconsciously did as she was told. Sure enough, she saw two saber marks glowing at the back of Arlo’s hands.
<< I have been with little Arlo since he was a kid. Now while I try to wake him up, can I trust you to hold out for about a minute? >>
Anita collected herself, and quickly answered, “Yes!” her cute voice was full of determination.
After that she quickly asked, “But wha-who are you?”
After a very brief silence, she received her reply, << I am his guardian. >>
As the growling sounds drew ever closer, Anita jumped in front of Arlo and called out with a cute voice: “Water domain!”
