Chapter 3: Chapter Three:

ñ

Darkness enveloped Eleven, pressing in from every side like a suffocating blanket. Her body was weightless, spinning endlessly through an abyss that had no beginning and no end. Flashes of her past lives danced in her mind—her mother's hollow eyes, the sterile walls of Hawkins Lab, the screams of her friends. They came and went like shattered fragments of a mirror, each one sharper than the last.

And then, she hit the ground.

The impact forced the air from her lungs, sending a sharp jolt of pain through her ribs. She gasped, her fingers clawing at the surface beneath her. It wasn't asphalt. It wasn't stone. It felt… alive. The ground pulsed beneath her palms, warm and wet, as though it had a heartbeat of its own.

Eleven pushed herself up, her breath ragged. The world around her was bathed in an eerie red glow, the sky churning with dark clouds that twisted and writhed like living shadows. The air was thick and heavy, filled with the stench of decay. Towering spires of black rock jutted out from the landscape, their surfaces glistening with a slick, viscous substance that oozed down into pools of shimmering liquid.

She knew this place.

The Upside Down.

But something was different. This wasn't the same twisted reflection of Hawkins she had come to fear. It was bigger, more chaotic, as though it had evolved into something far more dangerous. And in the distance, looming over everything, was a massive structure—a fortress of jagged, angular design, pulsating with a faint blue light. It was unlike anything she had ever seen.

"You've arrived," a voice echoed behind her, smooth and unyielding.

Eleven spun around, her fists clenched, her power flickering to life as her nose began to bleed once more. Kang stood several feet away, his green armor gleaming faintly in the dim red light. His expression was calm, almost amused, as though he had been waiting for her.

"Where did you take me?" she demanded, her voice trembling with equal parts fear and fury.

"Not 'where,'" Kang replied, gesturing to the sprawling landscape around them. "But 'when.' This is a fragment of the multiverse—your multiverse, to be precise. A piece of the Upside Down, torn from your world and left adrift in the currents of time."

Eleven's heart pounded in her chest. "Why am I here?"

Kang took a step closer, his hands clasped behind his back. "Because you are the bridge. The thread that connects all of this. Your powers are not bound to one reality, one timeline. They are… expansive. Infinite. And that makes you valuable."

"I'm not your weapon," Eleven spat, the ground beneath her trembling as her power flared.

"No," Kang said, his voice soft. "You're not. Not yet."

The air around them shimmered, and suddenly, the landscape shifted. Eleven blinked, disoriented, as the dark, pulsating ground was replaced by a barren wasteland of ash and rubble. The fortress in the distance was gone, replaced by the shattered remnants of a city she recognized all too well: Hawkins.

But it wasn't her Hawkins.

The buildings were charred and crumbling, their frames twisted beyond recognition. The streets were littered with debris, and the air was thick with smoke. In the distance, she could see the rusting remains of the Starcourt Mall, its once-bright neon sign flickering faintly. It was a ghost of her past, a reminder of everything she had lost.

"This is what happens," Kang said, his voice cutting through the silence. "This is the cost of power left unchecked. This is your future if you continue to resist me."

Eleven turned to him, her eyes narrowing. "You did this."

Kang shook his head. "No. This was always destined to happen. You may not realize it yet, but the Upside Down is not just a part of your world—it's a part of you. It will consume everything unless you learn to control it. Unless you embrace it."

"I won't," Eleven said, her voice shaking with defiance.

"You will," Kang said simply. "Because you'll have no choice."

Before Eleven could respond, the ground beneath her feet shifted again, and she was falling. The world blurred into a kaleidoscope of colors and shapes, spinning wildly as she tumbled through the void. Her screams echoed in her ears, mingling with a low, guttural roar that seemed to come from everywhere and nowhere at once.

And then, she landed.

This time, the ground was solid, cold, and familiar. Eleven opened her eyes, gasping for air, and found herself back in the Sanctum Sanctorum. The glowing sigils that Strange had drawn still hovered in the air, casting flickering shadows across the room. Wanda was kneeling beside her, her hands glowing with faint crimson light as she stabilized Eleven's erratic energy.

"You're back," Wanda said, relief evident in her voice. "We thought we lost you."

Eleven sat up, her head spinning. "Kang… he showed me…"

"What did he show you?" Strange asked, stepping forward. His expression was unreadable, but his tone carried a sense of urgency.

"A place," Eleven said, her voice barely above a whisper. "A part of the Upside Down. But… different. Bigger. He said it's connected to me. That it'll destroy everything if I don't—" She broke off, her throat tightening.

"If you don't what?" Wanda pressed gently.

"Control it," Eleven finished, her hands shaking. "But I can't… I can't stop it."

"Yes, you can," Wanda said firmly. "Whatever Kang told you, he's lying. He wants you to believe you're powerless so you'll give in to him. But you're stronger than he is."

Eleven looked at her, tears brimming in her eyes. "I don't know how."

"Then we'll figure it out," Wanda said, her tone leaving no room for doubt. "Together."

Strange sighed, rubbing his temples. "This just got a lot more complicated. If Kang is using the Upside Down as a weapon, we'll need to act fast. He's not just after Eleven—he's after the entire multiverse."

"What do we do?" Wanda asked.

Strange turned to Eleven, his expression serious. "First, we teach her how to fight back."

Eleven swallowed hard, her heart pounding. She didn't know if she was ready for what was coming. But as she looked around the room—at Wanda's unwavering determination, at Strange's calm resolve—she felt a flicker of hope.

For the first time, she wasn't alone.
