Chapter 218 The shadow returns

Nika already knew something strange was going on when she agreed to go back along with Jon and Ethan. The logical step would have been to refuse to go back until Ethan crossed the gate but that would have alerted him and she didn't trust Jon enough to not take Ethan's side.

Instead of refusing, she agreed but instead of going back she vanished into Uriel's shadow. As usual, Uriel could sense her presence lurking within his shadow but she couldn't see or hear anything that happened in the outside because she was actually inside of Uriel's museum.

Her plan was to poke her head out of Uriel's shadow from time to time waiting for the perfect opportunity to go back, but since she was bored she started to roam the museum. She saw the damaged clay figurine of the jaguar spirit, Thunderbolt Iron and all the other artifacts, but what really caught her eye was the souvenir shop.

There were several dolls just like Luna's, all of cryptids Uriel killed before. They were anatomically correct replicas down to the detail and Nika felt chills ran down her spine while she examined them from behind the counter. The changeling was the scariest looking cryptid she ever saw, though it wasn't the strongest.

Had Uriel known she was going through his trait like it was her home he would have probably scolded her, especially if she got near the catalog because she would most likely ask him to buy stuff for her. Luckily, before she did a voice was heard coming off from the smartphone placed on one of the pedestals.

Uriel started communicating with Nika by using the speakers while on the outside it looked as though he was speaking to himself.

That allowed her to be somewhat aware of what was going on outside and she stood by the smartphone the whole time. She saw the revolver disappear when Uriel summoned it and reappear again once he stored it back, but it wasn't until Thunderbolt Iron disappeared that she started worrying.

"Can you hear me? Speak to me if you want me to come out." She spoke to the smartphone not knowing if he could hear her. She grew more anxious as seconds went by and she started worrying about Uriel's safety until she couldn't take it anymore and poked her head out of Uriel's trait only to be greeted by a falling sword.

She grabbed it and jabbed it through Ethan's chest completely out of instinct. "Gotcha!" Her smile disappeared as soon as she realized how hurt Uriel was and she held Uriel on her arms to prevent him from falling to the ground.

"Took you long enough." Uriel spoke with a raspy voice as his neck had been blowtorched only a few seconds ago.

"It's not over yet." She turned to look at the colonel who was gasping for air as the piercing wound on his lung made it difficult for him to breathe.

A wound like that was bound to be troublesome, but no heavenly rank would fall by just that, especially someone like Ethan who could manipulate air. He started filling and emptying his lungs with air using his trait, until he was finally able to speak.

"You fucking liers! How did you do it?" Ethan spoke in an angry voice, his wide mouth couldn't be called a smile anymore because of all the missing teeth.

Nika didn't reply, she simply walked forward wielding Thunderbolt Iron, the breeze caused by Ethan's trait violently waved her hair giving her the look of a heroine. For the first time in a long while Uriel could appreciate her beauty, the length of her sunkissed legs and the soft curve of her bottom.

'Dammit, what am I thinking now?' Uriel scolded himself as he stood back up and readied himself for a fight.

"You should rest now, leave him to me." Nika said over her shoulder. Uriel couldn't help but blush slightly at her but for some reason, he was deeply annoyed for feeling this way. Nevertheless, he decided to go watch Medusa and see if there was anything he could do to help her.

"He's a fucking ascended, how did he do that? How did you come back?" Ethan asked again. "Fine, I guess I'll have to get the answers by force." He engulfed himself in flames and flew towards Nika who deviated his course with a powerful kick.

Ethan deadened his fall with a cushion made of air and took advantage of the distance by shooting fireballs at them. Nika dodged some and blocked some others with the sword, while Uriel received them in full with his body to prevent any further damage from falling on to the already severely injured Medusa.

The colonel grinned at this and focused his attacks on Uriel but that proved to be a mistake.

"Where are you looking at? I'm your opponent," Nika said mockingly as she darted forward but she was met with a firewall. "This guy is too troublesome." She said as she took some distance from the fire. Ranged combat had always been her weak spot, that was why she always carried a handgun with her, but now that her battery was dead she had no means to attack.

Noticing this, Uriel summoned his revolver and started shooting towards Ethan's general direction. He couldn't see him because of all the fireballs coming his way, but one of the bullets grazed their opponent and prevented him from using his trait for a glimpse of a second.

Nika didn't miss this chance and leapt towards Ethan who countered with a powerful gust of flames that came from his hand. An attack as powerful as that should have been enough to kill Nika, or at least leave her badly injured but Uriel watched the scene unfold and shook his head because as soon as Ethan did that his fate was sealed.

The second Ethan created so much fire in front of him a shadow was cast right behind him and the fight was over.

When the flames disappeared, Ethan's head was parted from his body and Nika, who had blinked right behind him, emerged victorious.
