Chapter 122 The lost city of San Antonio
"First you need to know a few things. This city was once the place of an important historic battle, where the Texans fought against the Mexican forces. It was a huge deal for both nations. Does 'remember the Alamo' ring a bell?" Uriel asked.
Everyone looked to the person next to them, but no one seemed to know anything about it.
"Why does something that happened long ago even matters to us? It's not like knowing it is going to help us in any way. You're acting all self important about useless things." Mark said mockingly, though Uriel didn't react how he expected. Instead of being angry, Uriel was genuinely happy for some reason.
"It's important because I don't think matters are as simple as they seem. Do you guys know why the cryptids decided to settle in a place like this? I mean, every living creature lives in places where the natural resources allow them to survive. It usually means water and food but, what do cryptids eat?"
"That's easy, they eat people!" Mary butted in.
"Yes, but they also eat other cryptids. Isn't it fair to assume that gathering in the same location would be dangerous to cryptids? If so, why do they decide to remain in this place?" Uriel continued.
Tina's group was dumbstruck by these questions. It wasn't the first time they wondered about such things, but they were trying to make sense of Uriel's words without any success. There was no apparent connection between knowing the lost city's real name and the cryptids behavior, though those who belonged to Uriel's party seemed to grasp the situation.
"Are you sure you want to tell them about that?" Sam asked for confirmation, after realizing Uriel might disclose the existence of the dungeons.
"There's no point in hiding it, not if we want their help.
What is the historical value of this place, why did Texans and Mexicans fight tooth and nail for this city and how did the cryptids overrun this city so easily, it's all related to the origin of orichalcum..." Uriel seemed to realize his blunder too late as Mark was getting ready to tell him off for speaking openly about orichalcum, but Tina stopped him.
"He's an ascended now, can't you see?" She stopped Mark from his usual tantrums, allowing Uriel to continue. She was deeply interested in what Uriel had to say about orichalcum as it was the most valuable resource known to men.
"The short answer is: Dungeons. Dungeons are underground structures that seem to gather flux, and it seems flux energy is involved in the natural creation of orichalcum. The reason why this city is so important is because there must be a dungeon beneath it."
"You're just spitting nonsense!" Mark couldn't take any of it anymore and he took offense in Tina paying attention to Uriel, though no one agreed with him and instead showered Uriel with questions about the supposed existence of dungeons.
Uriel explained what he could to the best of his ability and, even though he left out some information on purpose, they still believed him. Uriel then asked them to help him clear the dungeon with the promise of sharing the loot and the credit, with the sole condition that they give him full rights of ownership and the credit for the discovery if it turned out to be true.
Tina and Uriel both shook hands after reaching an agreement and then it was Medusa's turn to share her findings.
She informed everyone about the locked room in the tower, but after Uriel's reveal it came off as small news and they reached the conclusion that, as long as they stayed away from that room no harm would come to them which meant they were safe enough to spend what was left of the night in the cathedral.
The chance to get some rest was well received by everyone, especially to Uriel who couldn't wait for the rest of the group to fall asleep. He remained with his eyes closed trying to sort his thoughts.
By disclosing that information to everyone he made everyone present aware of the existence of dungeons, thus endangering his own plans of claiming a dungeon for his party. It could be said it was a huge mistake on his part, but that was far from reality.
The battle of the Alamo was considered one of the biggest milestones in the battle for the independence of Texas which is why he knew about it despite being more versed in ancient history. He was, after all, interested in archaeology and modern society wasn't of any interest to him.
It wasn't too long since he figured out that what he considered 'modern' society actually belonged to a distant past kept hidden from citizens so they couldn't find out about the true situation of mankind.
From what little he knew about the Alamo fort, one of the most important things he remembered was how close it was to the cathedral of San Fernando, which he guessed correctly was the one they were sheltering in.
By informing everyone about the existence of the dungeon, Uriel should be able to investigate it before going back to the city and grab whatever artifacts he could. Not just that, he also managed to strike a deal with Tina Celes, the heir of the most important company in the city, that basically made him the owner of the dungeon in front of witnesses.
It was too good to be true.
But sorting his feelings was just one of the reasons he wanted to stay up. Without realizing it, the minute Uriel laid eyes upon the religious artifacts the seed of a thought started crawling on the walls of his mind.
What started like an itch was becoming more clear by the minute, to the point where he could almost hear it in his mind.
'There's a treasure right in front of you, no one will miss a piece or two... all you have to do is grab it.'
