Chapter 111 : Clash of beasts

All Medusa saw was Uriel smirk and then disappear into a blur that darted beneath the invisible hound, past her and made it to the clay figurine that just finished charging.

Uriel took it on his hands and dropped it in the floor right below where he guessed was the merciless cryptid that still held on to Medusa's forearm with his maw.

A flash of light and several arcs of electricity later and the Jaguar spirit, the ferocious Ocelotl, entered the scene. The sudden appearance of the huge feline beneath the dog was enough to lift it in the air, causing Medusa to fall on Uriel's arms who was already waiting for her as he expected that outcome.

Medusa looked at him straight in the eye with a longing expression on her face. The scene was just like that of the romantic movies she enjoyed so much, where the boyfriend would risk his own life to save his loved one, though Uriel's gaze was fixed on her chest.

"My eyes are up´here, you jerk!" She said teasingly.

"Your trait is still active, dumbass." Uriel's cold reply was like a bucket of icy water to Medusa and she quickly snapped out of her daydreaming. Uriel placed Medusa next to Sam and now the three of them were together on one side, Luna was at the opposite corner of the building still unconscious and right in the middle a fierce battle was taking place.

The Ocelotl's blue flames had seemingly scorched the flesh on the chest of the black dog making the burn marks visible, but thanks to its advantage position the black dog was able to bite the Jaguar on the back of the neck keeping it from attacking.

It looked like a stalemate where the jaguar couldn't retaliate as long as the dog kept it's maw shut, but in reality the Jaguar was already dealing a considerable amount of pain to its enemy as the blue flames grew in brightness and power with every passing second.

Eventually, it got to the point where the dog couldn't help but let out a sorrowful wail and opened its maw just enough for the Jaguar to release itself, turn around and kick the dog with its powerful hind legs sending it flying through a concrete wall.

But the black dog wasn't a mere beast and something like that wasn't enough to defeat it. The hound seemed to ponder for a while if it was worth it to keep attacking the group or if retreating was a better choice, but the Jaguar cryptid jumped in pursuit before the dog could even stand back up.

The hound's bite was incredibly powerful, its fangs sharp enough to pierce through the beautiful spotted fur of the Ocelotl and now its invisibility went off, its hulking figure gave it the look of a muscular werewolf walking on all fours.

Had the cryptid looked like that from the beginning, the hunting party would have never thought in choosing to collect that bounty, but that was precisely what gave the black dog an edge over human hunters.

Being one of the most common cryptids found in the safest POI nearby, black dogs were usually looked down upon. Sometimes they would even be completely ignored by hunters, much like horned rabbits, as hunting them was more trouble than it was worth.

That was the reason why the black dog could become so powerful despite being so close to a human city, as it could feed to its heart's content without drawing too much attention. After becoming an entity level cryptid, a black dog was supposed to stand on top of the food chain, and yet...

"It's winning! Your pet is winning!" Medusa cheered.

"It's not a pet, pets are supposed to be cute but this is just too savage." Uriel replied, stunned by the the brutal fight being displayed in front of him.

The imposing feline would attack the dog from behind, then retreat, and as soon as the dog tried to run away it would pounce again from behind. Its speed was so incredible it was difficult to see it, and all they could make out of the scene was the blue shimmer taking laps around the black dog. It was a marvelous spectacle, one that Luna would have certainly appreciated but she remained unconscious.

The blue shimmer finally came to a stop signalling the end of the battle, the pale light emitted by the blue flames on the shoulders of the jaguar spirit illuminated just enough for Uriel to notice something odd.

"It seems to be eating the corpse..." He muttered and then ran towards the cryptid in a rush as he produced the old lewd magazine from his trait. "No! Don't eat it! Drop the flux orb, bad cat!" He yelled as he hit the jaguar on the nuzzle over and over with all his strength.

The hits seemingly annoyed the Ocelotl as the lewd magazine was able to channel flux since it was one of Uriel's artifacts, and it reacted by shoving Uriel with a paw and kept digging on the corpse until it retrieved the black dog's flux orb.

"No way!" Medusa said as she covered her mouth.

All that noise was enough to wake up both Luna and Sam, who were able to understand the situation but none of them was angry. Luna basked in the sight of the cryptid crushing the entity level orb with its molars and she vehemently scribbled on her journal, while Sam was just grateful he was finally free from the curse that almost drove him insane.

Sam stood up and patted his clothes, then headed towards Uriel and placed a hand over his shoulder.

"This wasn't the result we wanted, but at least we're alive." He said trying to console Uriel.

Not only they lost a valuable entity level flux orb, without it they wouldn't be able to collect the bounty and all their troubles would have been for nothing. To add insult to injury, they also destroyed all their batteries and would have to pay for them at the Cryptid hunting agency, and they even wasted a flux orb to make the improvised tier 3 battery.

"We're alive..." Uriel echoed completely distraught and then continued. "And we're also poor!"
