Chapter 110 : Knock knock
It took Medusa a couple hours to finish her makeshift tier 3 battery, but she was really proud of the result. It didn't look anything near to a tier 3 battery, but the readings were almost perfect. In the meantime, Uriel and Luna kept themselves busy trying to set up a trap that would alert them the second something tried to get in, and they also hung Sam from a wall so his shadow would be minimal.
If the black dog truly was capable of merging with the shadows like Nika was, it would have trouble coming out of a shadow that small.
"Poor Sam, he looks like a caterpillar." Medusa giggled and poked at him with her finger. Sam wiggled, but couldn't do much else.
"Is it really necessary to keep him gagged though?" Uriel asked.
"No." Luna replied dryly, though she didn't move to remove the gag either.
While they were stronger and better prepared than they have ever been, keeping a cool head was of the utmost importance when setting up a trap and Sam's constant whimpering and whining was getting on their nerves.
When the sun finally set, Medusa handed over the makeshift tier 3 battery to Uriel and he placed the clay figurine on the ground. It would take just the flick of a switch and the clay figurine would receive all the energy stored inside in just a few seconds.
The group remained expectant, making the most of their sharp senses. Uriel was leaning on the wall while staring at Sam, while the girls watched over the entrance, but time passed and nothing happened. It was completely dark outside and they could hear the occasional noises caused by cryptids in the distance, but there was no sign of the Black dog.
It was just when Uriel was already nodding his head in drowsiness that something happened.
"Hmhmm! hmmm! mmm!!!" Sam's muffled voice called for Uriel's attention. He was contorting on his position as if he was covered in ants, but there was no threat on sight.
"What's the matter?" Uriel asked his companion as he removed his gag.
"It's here! The fucking thing is here! Can't you hear it?" Yet only the shrill sound of his voice could be heard.
"Calm down! you're the only one making a fuss!" Medusa scolded without taking her eyes from the entrance.
Instead of settling down, Sam wiggled even harder and tried to cut the rope, he even started hitting himself against the wall just to have a chance to be released from his constrains. The rest of the group wasn't aware of what he was going through.
Even in the silence of the night, Sam could hear footsteps surrounding the building, then sniffing and panting. That was enough to send him into panic, but what followed was even worse.
"It's growling! Please, make it stop!" Sam twisted and twirled, to the point where Medusa couldn't stand seeing him like that anymore and abandoned her position to cut the ropes, but that proved to be a wrong decision.
The second she reached Sam, the abandoned restaurant's double doors shattered and debris was sent off all over the place. And yet, nothing came through the door.
Luna, who stood her ground expecting a cryptid to appear, tilted her head in confusion when nothing happened. Uriel was still pointing the gun towards the empty door frame when Luna was violently sent flying across the room.
"It's invisible!" Uriel shouted and he flicked the switch. Contrary to tier 1 batteries who would often fail because of a cryptid's field of disruption, Medusa's makeshift tier 3 battery proved its worth and worked properly, only a little slower than expected.
Uriel cocked his gun and shot towards the entrance with the intention to, at least, scare away the cryptid but it was useless. The bullets bounced off in mid air and the cryptid didn't so much as wail. Medusa was trying to cut the ropes as fast as she could, but Sam was passed out and it only made things more difficult. In less than three seconds all the preparations became worthless.
Not just that, they were now facing an invisible entity rank threat.
The next to be sent flying by the powerful cryptid was Uriel, who attempted to block its way with his own body and now the only body able member of the party was Medusa.
Enraged more than scared, she activated her trait and jumped forward with a high kick. The cryptid didn't even bother blocking it, yet Medusa was far from done and she unleashed a chain of martial art movements that would put the old arcade fighting games to shame.
She didn't know the effects her hits were causing, she didn't need to know as her movements were ingrained into her body by years of constant training and practice. High kick, elbow strike, uppercut, a short jump then a knee hit to the nuzzle. The black dog writhed in pain as his face became bloodied.
Although the cryptid remained invisible, thanks to the blood stains Medusa was now able to somewhat see its visage and focused all of her attacks in the places where the cryptid was hurt.
*Awoooo*
The sound of its howl echoed within the four walls putting a strain on Medusa's ears and making her lose her focus just enough for the vicious black dog to land a bite on her forearm. Noticing the streak of blood running down from Medusa's elbow and seeing her floating mid air after being lifted by the invisible cryptid, Uriel felt completely powerless.
What use was possessing an enhanced regeneration if he lacked the power to defeat his enemies. This thought and many others crossed his adrenaline saturated brain, this gave him enough clarity to realize that shooting would be pointless, but that not everything was lost.
He stood up, then knelt down just like an athlete, just like that time he made a vlog entry with Medusa's help. He could feel the cold floor with his fingertips, the steam coming out of his mouth, the sweat trickling down his forehead, and then he lunged forward.
