Defying the Rogue Alpha

Chapter 4: Chapter 4

The ride to Silver Pack wasn't so long; it took around thirty minutes. Ava had sat stifled in the backseat beside Alpha Raventhorn. She dared not speak, and the only sounds he made were grunts whenever she felt he was thinking aloud.

The weight of her decision finally settled in on the ride over. She had willingly walked away with the man known as the Butcher of Silver Pack. She questioned if all the beatings she had been taking all these months were beginning to affect her brain.

No one wanted her in the Crimson pack anyway. They were probably throwing a party now that she had left. Although the shrieking face of Selene had been worth it the moment Ava dropped the bomb.

Every now and then she could feel Raventhorn's gaze on her. He looked at her like she was his prey or pawn. Hard to tell.

When they arrived at the Silver Pack, the bustle of the town stole her breath. A fortress stood in the center, far different from the estate at Crimson Pack. The fortress looked like it could withstand any battle. Driving through the fortress, a castle-like mansion came into view. Uniformed gammas lined the entrance. Ava swallowed. Obviously, she was in enemy territory now.

Raventhorn stepped out of the car when they parked outside the mansion. His men on the bikes moved in sync, one of them standing loyally by their alpha while the other opened the car door for her to step out.

Raventhorn walked ahead while the men escorted her in the opposite direction, through a set of iron doors. She stepped into a hallway where she heard music filtering through. Then they entered into a huge living room where several women were relaxing on plush sofas. They were all stunning.

As soon as their eyes landed on her, there was silence; even the music stopped. She shifted on her feet uncomfortably.

"Who is this?" The tallest and most elegant amongst them was the first to speak. She sat with her legs crossed and a glass of deep red wine in her hand.

"The new concubine." One of the guards that had escorted her in responded.

The youngest among them rolled her eyes dramatically. "There he goes again."

"Be nice." The first woman said, setting down her wine glass and standing gracefully. She walked over to Ava, appraising her from head to toe. "I'm Nelly. I'm the first concubine."

"First?" They have ranks? Ava thought.

"Yes. I see you carry bruises. Your old pack wasn't so nice, I'm guessing?" Nelly noted.

Ava stayed silent. She wasn't there to give them a sob story about her past. She was there for one thing only, to become powerful enough to tower over her abusers. Raventhorn had been presented as her ticket, and she would be taking it.

Another girl walked towards them, also looking at her bruises like a work of art.

"You are?" Ava asked.

"I'm Lily, and there is Sarah." She pointed in the direction of the lady that wasn't so stoked when Ava came in.

Ava scanned their faces once more. Nelly had a commanding aura, Lily looked playful, and Seraphine had a constant scowl.

"Lucas doesn't keep weak women." Nelly pointed out.

"What makes you think I am weak?" Ava asked.

"You have all these bruises, don't you? It simply means you do not fight back. An attacker rarely comes back to hurt a prey who fights back. Lucas must have been quite impressed with you."

"I guess he was since I am here."

Nelly stepped closer. "You can choose to continue to be weak and let this place eat you alive, or you can start learning to be strong."

Lily clapped her hands together happily. "Great! I will get the maids to come help you clean up and look proper. That is one sorry excuse of a dress."

"You lot are way too excited to meet another rival. What is wrong with you guys?" Sarah said.

"You will get used to it, Sarah. Someday." Nelly turned to Ava once more. "Ignore her. She is just mad she has lost her position as the latest concubine so soon."

How does one live like this? Ava thought.

*****

Ava had always defined transformation as something magical, like when a fairy godmother waves her wand and spouts some nonsense and instantly generates a stunning ball gown, glass slippers, and the whole shenanigans.

But the transformation she was going through was more like prepping a lamb for slaughter.

The omegas stripped her down, threw her dress in the fire, and led her into a steaming bath. One thing stood out for her, though; she used to be the one helping people take baths and select dresses. Maybe she had made the right decision after all.

The hot water stung her bruises, but she swallowed the pain. This wasn't a time to show weakness. Nelly was in the room with her, guiding the omegas on what to do and what ointments to use.

"Let's make you look like someone worthy of an alpha."

The maids scrubbed her down, and she felt the dirt that had accumulated on her for the past months fall from her skin, the aching in her muscles dulling. Her hair was delicately washed and brushed.

By the time they were done cleaning her up and draping her in a red silky dress that sucked all the sexiness out of the room, she barely recognized herself in the mirror.

She stepped out of the expensively furnished room that was given to her, feeling like a princess on the outside and confused on the inside. She made her way into the grand living room.

Sarah, who was still grumpy about her presence, looked impressed. "Well, at least you don't look like something the cat dragged in."

Lily shot her a glare. "Sarah, try to be nice for once."

"I am being nice. That clearly was a compliment."

"Why is Sarah the only one not so pleased about me being the latest concubine? I mean, you all don't mind sharing a man?"
