Chapter 5: Chapter 5: Evolution (part 2)
Azure's heart races at the thought. He leans closer to the dome, his breath fogging the glass slightly as his eyes trace the ever-changing landscape of the miniature world. "I can't wait," he murmurs, the excitement bubbling inside him.
He spends the rest of the day with nothing else on his mind, his focus solely on the miniature world. Even though the system advised him to be patient, he finds himself glued to the dome, unable to look away. The passage of time inside the dome is relentless, but each second for Azure feels like an eternity.
The jelly-like creatures continue to evolve in the ocean, some growing small fins, others stretching tendrils further, more advanced now but still primitive in their movements. Some float aimlessly, while others appear to be developing a form of direction, sensing their environment, testing the waters.
Azure shifts his position slightly, eyes never leaving the dome. His legs feel stiff, but he doesn't care. He watches as the creatures multiply, some changing in unexpected ways, their bodies becoming more complex as the hours stretch on. His mind races with curiosity about what they'll become.
As evening begins to fall, casting a golden light over the island, Azure finally stretches and steps back from the dome. The sky outside glows a brilliant orange, but his attention remains fixed on the world inside.
He whispers to himself, "Tomorrow… tomorrow I'll see something incredible."
He knows the night will be long. His thoughts are already racing toward what might emerge from the ocean, what kind of creature might crawl onto land, and how this entire world, once just a barren landscape, is coming to life.
The next morning, Azure is jolted awake by an unfamiliar sound. A sharp, nostalgic chime fills the air—the system has chosen an old ringtone today, one he hasn't heard in years. It feels out of place in this surreal environment, yet somehow comforting. He shakes off the sleep, blinking against the early light streaming through his cabin window. Without wasting a moment, he throws on his clothes and rushes out to the dome.
The system already turned off the acceleration of time when he arrives, his heart skips a beat. The ocean within the miniature world is no longer calm. The creatures that had once been simple blobs now move with purpose. Azure's breath catches as he notices something extraordinary: a group of sleek, fish-like creatures gliding gracefully through the water. They are no bigger than a mouse, but in the miniature ecosystem, they appear as giant behemoths. Their bodies shimmer in the artificial sunlight, glistening with iridescent scales that ripple like liquid silver.
"Look at them…" Azure breathes, crouching down to get a closer view. "They're… incredible."
Each fish is long and streamlined, with a sharp dorsal fin running the length of its back. Their eyes are large and alert, glinting like polished gems. Their jaws, although small, are lined with sharp, needle-like teeth. As they swim, their movements are fluid and precise, cutting through the water with ease. Azure watches in awe as one of the fish suddenly darts forward, its body a blur of motion as it snaps at a smaller creature—a jelly-like organism still floating aimlessly in the water. The larger fish clamps down, shredding its prey with a swift, brutal efficiency.
"They're hunting," Azure mutters, his voice tinged with both excitement and a hint of unease.
"There are only a few for now," the Nexus chimes in, its calm voice resonating in Azure's mind. "But these creatures are rapidly establishing dominance within the ecosystem. Their evolution has taken them far, and they will continue to grow stronger as time passes."
One of the creatures catches his attention—a slightly larger fish, its scales a darker shade of blue than the others. It swims slowly at first, but there's an intensity in its movements, a predatory grace. Its fins are sharper, more defined, and its body ripples with muscular power as it moves through the water. It hunts alone, stalking its prey with calculated precision, unlike the smaller fish that swim in loose groups.
Azure watches it closely, following its every movement. The fish locks onto another small organism floating in the water, and with a sudden burst of speed, it strikes. Its jaws snap shut, tearing into the gelatinous mass, then quickly retreating into the deeper parts of the miniature ocean.
"That one…" Azure whispers. "It's different from the others."
"Yes, Host," the Nexus replies. "It appears to be a more dominant specimen, potentially an alpha of its kind. Such creatures often evolve unique traits to ensure their survival and superiority within the ecosystem."
Azure watches in silence as the larger fish disappears into the shadows of the ocean, leaving the smaller creatures to continue their hunt. The scene before him is both captivating and terrifying in its own way. The ocean, once teeming with simple lifeforms, is now becoming a battleground where survival of the fittest reigns.
He pulls back slightly, rubbing his eyes, overwhelmed by the rapid progression of life inside the dome. "If these creatures are this advanced already… I can't even imagine what's going to happen next."
"The evolutionary process will only accelerate, Host," the Nexus says. "As the creatures adapt and grow more complex, the balance within the ecosystem will shift. Some may move to land soon, while others will dominate the ocean."
"Nexus," Azure says, his voice steady, "turn back the acceleration of time."
He straightens up and says, "By the way, can we speed things up more? I want to see how far they can evolve."
"Affirmative, Host. Increasing time acceleration to 2,000 years per second."
The instant the command is issued, everything within the dome seems to blur. Azure watches as entire lifetimes flash by in moments. At first, the larger, more advanced fish continue their reign, darting through the water, hunting with precision. But as each second ticks by, Azure notices subtle changes—the water grows murkier, the once lush plants on the ocean floor shrivel, replaced by new growth.
