Chapter 548: Another side of the story
Gabriel Collier had insisted on accompanying his friend to listen to David Clayton's version. He wanted to control every piece of information this time, and not risk hurting Luther or Nate Woods again.
Since he had been blessed not to feel their anger, he needed to make up for the mistake. He was no fool, and he knew that he was still working because a fairy had put a good word for him.
Nate Woods was ruthless, and the kids turned out to be his. It had been a mistake to let his friend reveal everything to the press, but thankfully Lara Clayton wasn't as angry as to end his career.
«You're not going to publish anything of this,» Gabriel said. «Am I clear?»
«Sure,» the paparazzi sighed. «Also, I've heard from a source close to Woods about David Clayton. I want to hear his version, though.»
«What have you heard?»
«His version first,» the paparazzi said, smiling at his friend. It was such a rare sight, to see Gabriel so curious about something. Especially when it was about gossip.
They stopped bickering when they saw a young man enter the cafe. The paparazzi waved, and David Clayton sat in front of them.
He had the same eyes as Lara, and the same dark brown hair. However, something was deeply different.
The way they looked around them and their vibes were almost the opposite of one another.
He was wearing casual clothes but of the best quality, including an expensive watch his mother had bought him when the family company had finished a big project. He was going to take the reins of the company, one day. It was only right if part of the earnings were used on his image. It was more an investment than an expense.
«Hello,» he said, moving his eyes from one man to the other. He wasn't sure which one contacted him, so he just waited for their questions.
«David Clayton, right? We're glad to have the chance to hear your version of this story. About your sister, Lara Clayon's, children and her unplanned pregnancy.»
«Oh, that... It's an old story. We didn't know she had twins with Nate Woods... We knew about Nate Woods, but she didn't tell us anything about the kids. Not even that they were two.»
«She said your parents didn't know that the father was Nate Woods. Is it true?»
«I don't know... For sure, I had no clue it was him. But, honestly, does it make sense? Why hiding it?»
«Because Nate Woods was facing a difficult period at the time, maybe?» Gabriel said. «She was afraid of your parents' reaction... Or something like that?»
«I don't know much. My sister and I were very close as children, but we grew apart as adults. Even during her second year at college, she didn't contact with me too much. She had her friends and her own social life... Which included Nate Woods, apparently.»
«And after?» the paparazzi intruded. «What happened after the pregnancy? Did you get in contact?»
«She moved away from Sheton a couple of years after the babies were born. We couldn't find her that easily, and it became impossible even just or have a chat. But then, after she left, we lost contacts.»
«And you never talked again?» the man asked.
«No, we haven't. Until now, but my sister is as stubborn as back then. She doesn't want to talk with me, for some reason. I'm sorry for what happened with our parents, but she shouldn't be angry at me. Am I wrong, perhaps?»
«Are you sure it has nothing to do with that time when you asked some money from her?» the paparazzi asked. «I heard a story, but I can't be sure if I don't ask you.»
«Uh? What are you talking about? I went to visit my niece or nephew, back then. I didn't ask her for money! If she told you, she lied.»
«Too bad it wasn't Lara Clayton who told me. You went to ask her for money, and she gave you. So, I don't understand. Why did you cut every contact?»
David frowned. How in the world did that man know so much?
«It was not like that,» he said. «She gave me the money on her own and told me to never come back again. She threw me out of her flat! Without letting me see the baby. She didn't even tell me there were two, twins!»
«It sounds very incredible as a story. But let's continue. Have you ever met her again after that?»
«No, she didn't want to meet. Even just the first time had been difficult.»
«When did it happen?»
«About two years after the twins were born.»
«Two years? And, in all that time, you didn't find any excuse to visit her?»
«Is this an interview or an interrogation?» David said, offended.
If that man hadn't offered money for his story, David would have left. Too bad he needed that money badly.
Your journey continues on empire
He either earned it with the interview, or he would have needed to sell something. Maybe that watch. It would have earned quite the amount.
«Neither,» the paparazzi said. «I need to confirm my information, or my friend Gabriel will kill me for publishing an unverified information. I can't just write it out even if I know it is true. I need proof.»
He rolled his eyes at Gabriel's need for insurances.
«I visited my sister after so long because the timing was right. Our parents had calmed down and were focused on the company, so I could leave and find my sister.»
«And what did you do, then?»
«When she didn't let me see the kid?»
«Then.»
«Nothing. I turned and left.»
«I have a source saying you borrowed money from her and never returned it.»
«You can't blindly believe to your source.»
«I'm asking you: is it true?»
«How could I do that?» David exclaimed. «Rather, why don't we chat about something else?»
«Do you have something more interesting?»
«I hope so!»
