Chapter 547: Speed up
«I'm not buying their competition but their suppliers,» Nate said. «I have also told everyone not to give them any job in the construction sector.»
«Oh,» Lara sighed. «You're not buying competition but simply forbidding your contacts to give them work. But is it wise to buy the companies supplying my parents?»
«I haven't touched their building enterprises. What I'm focused on, for the moment, is the clothing company. LY Corp also needs fabrics, so buying some won't be much of a problem. We'll simply use it for extra production in the following months. The suppliers will require a higher price from your parents while some won't even be able to sell to anyone else.»
«So, the competition is getting fierce because of this? Because of the prices?»
«I didn't notice anything with the competition in the clothing field. I can't say the same for the constructions, but I haven't paid much attention.»
«But Grace seemed convinced when she told me you were buying their competition.»
«Maybe someone else is doing it,» Nate pointed out. «The same person who caused all this mess, I guess.»
«Do you think it's my uncle?»
«Why don't you tell me?»
«Oh, Nate... He said it was an incident, and I believe him. He gave some information to a reporter so that he could investigate, and things went out of control when the reporter involved a famous paparazzi. But I doubt my uncle has the resources to create real trouble for my parents. He just got out of jail, in the end. And he had given up most of his assets as a consequence of his crimes.»
«He was innocent,» Nate pointed out. «You shouldn't say crimes.»
«I know, but the judges didn't believe him. He wants justice, and for that, he hired one of the best journalists around. I'm not going to tell you his name because he's the only one who can help my uncle, right now. But you'll find out when the article is published. My parents can't possibly have hidden every single trace of their mischiefs.»
«What about your brother, then?»
«I don't know,» Lara sighed. «I don't know what to tell you. I don't want to meet with him.»
«It's okay. I'm relieved, actually. It makes everything easier. Especially the fact that you won't care about what happens to the Clayton couple. You don't need to be concerned. They hurt you enough in the past, it wouldn't be good if they could do it again now.»
«Why is everything so complicated?» she whined, her hands holding her head. She sat on the bed and waited for Nate to come closer to her. Then, she leaned her weight on him.
Having someone she could rely on was so different from being alone. Even just for the warmth that his hugs could provide.
«Also, I just checked the mail from the university,» she murmured. «I've been accepted in the course I wanted to enrol in. My entrance text was good enough for it, I'm so glad...»
«I had no doubts you would do it,» Nate pointed out. «But we can celebrate even if it was so obvious.»
«It wasn't obvious,» she complained. True, she had worked hard, studying every time she was alone at home or her cubs were sleeping. However, it had been a long time since the last time she had studied from books. Continue reading on empire
She wasn't even sure she was ready to resume studying normally. She didn't even remember how to take notes, for goodness' sake!
«We can tell the twins tomorrow,» Nate said. «They'll be happy for their mommy. Isn't that better? They'll be so proud of you. I also am, by the way.»
«Thank you,» she said, pressing her lips on his cheek. Feeling the support of her family made everything a tad easier.
«As for your mother, you shouldn't worry. Don't reply to unknown...»
«I can't do that!» she exclaimed. «What if it's important? What if it's someone from the university?»
«Oh,» he sighed. «What a difficult situation.»
«But I can hang up when I realise it's my mother or someone from my family. It's no big deal.»
«Are you sure?»
«Pretty much.»
And she was right. Nate observed her with a keen eye but didn't find much worry in her expression. Her fingers weren't trembling.
She was fine. He sighed, relieved that her former family had no more power over her. She could move on, like that, and focus on their pups and their future together.
«I love you, Nate,» she said, all of a sudden. «Thank you for being part of my life.»
She even pecked his cheek innocently, trying to convey her feelings.
«No,» he hummed. «Thank you for staying, Lara.»
He was going to reduce the Clayton family's power as much as possible, giving them more pressing headaches. They wouldn't have time to trouble his mate if they were on the brink of survival.
«I want other kids,» Lara said, out of the blue.
«Sure,» Nate replies without even thinking. She just had to ask.
«I want to get married and have a party with everyone from the pack. I want to graduate from college and be entitled to my job in the company, as well as learn more about how to be an Alpha female. There's too much to do to worry about my parents. I'm relieved they can't hurt you, Nate.»
He nodded, surprised. He wanted all of that as well, sure. He could live without, too. All he asked for was her happiness, in the end.
He had to speed up his plans so that Lara could relax and think more often about pups and marriage. Also, it could come in handy to find out why was Grace convinced that someone was buying their competition. Who had money to waste like that? And did they have a reason?
«It's late. Let's go to sleep,» he said.
He would get up early in the morning and investigate a little bit, possibly without warning Lara. Only if what he found out wasn't dangerous or troubling, he would have told her everything.
«I'm so tired,» she sighed, following him under the sheets.
