Chapter 22: Chapter 22: I am not drunk! (I)

Of course, Eve understood the implied meaning when he said 'every night', but the atmosphere was too good, and she didn't want to ruin it, especially in such a beautiful setting.

Thus, she murmured, "We can discuss that later."

Alex was in a much better mood as they ate their food silently. It was a good steak, but Alex didn't enjoy it that much, simply because he had gotten sick eating this thing for months.

He had to taste the steak he cooked while learning how to make it from the chef he hired.

Even the highest quality beef felt like chewing clay for him after tasting dozens of steaks for over three months straight.

But with Eve eating what he made, he felt that the three-month steak-grilling course he had was well worth it.

He chuckled as he ate his steak, which prompted Eve to glance up at him and ask, "What's so funny?"

"Hm? Nothing," Alex replied. "It's just amusing because this is the first time you are willing to eat the food I made. Back then, you always scolded me because I wasted so many ingredients for making awful food."

"Because you WERE making awful food," Eve sighed out of exasperation. "We had to save a lot of money back then, and wasting groceries for burnt dinner that we couldn't eat was genuinely upsetting."

"Well, that was before I found out that you are filthy rich, of course," Eve muttered, and with that single sentence, the mood between them was dampened once again.

Alex didn't want to fill the atmosphere with depressing stuff, so he snapped his finger, and the middle-aged butler, who had been standing far from them, walked towards the table.

Alex pointed at the spot on the table and said, "Get me a champagne, Collection Krug would be nice."

"And for the miss, Sir?" the butler asked politely while looking at Evelyn.

"Hot chocolate," Alex replied calmly. "The chocolate should be thick and sweet."

"Certainly, Sir."

The butler excused himself as he had to get the champagne from the cellar and make the hot chocolate in the kitchen downstairs.

Meanwhile, Eve shot him a deadly gaze and asked, "Why are you giving me hot chocolate?"

"Huh? Isn't that your favorite?" Alex asked innocently, not knowing why Eve looked offended. "Do you want something else? Coffee? Tea? Lemonade?"

Eve gritted her teeth. She felt like she was being insulted and infantilized right now, but seeing how he looked genuinely confused made her unable to explode in front of him.

So she replied, "Champagne! Just get me what you get. I can handle it just fine!"

"Are you sure?" Alex recalled Evelyn, whom he dated for five years. "You have such a bad tolerance for alcohol, right? I remember you would get drunk by drinking a few cans of beer. This champagne is quite strong."

What Alex said was the truth. Eve was never a good drinker. She had such a low tolerance for alcohol as she wasn't exposed to one as a kid, and had always hated the effect.

She hated getting drunk because she would lose control over herself and possibly do or say something she shouldn't.

She was the honest rambling type of drunk, and she didn't like showing what was inside her heart.

Naturally, she wouldn't drink any alcohol even when she was fine dining with Pierre before, but this was different.

Her ex-boyfriend, Alex, looked down on her and treated her as if she couldn't handle her liquor! (She really couldn't).

She believed she could at least take a sip or two with no problem. This had become a matter of pride!

"Do you think I didn't build my alcohol resistance after two years?" Eve scoffed. "I am much different from what I used to be two years ago. I can handle my liquor just fine."

"Alright, if that's what you want," Alex shrugged.

The butler returned while pushing a fancy food trolley with a glass case. There were two champagne glasses and a bottle of unopened champagne inside the glass case, and by the looks of it, it seemed to be one of those fancy champagne that definitely had a strong alcohol content.

The butler opened the champagne right in front of them and filled the champagne glasses enough for three sips at best.

"The alcohol in this champagne is quite strong. Please drink it slowly, Miss," the butler warned Eve specifically. He then turned his head towards his real boss, Alex, and warned, "Please drink in moderation, Sir. It's not good to indulge yourself in too much alcohol whenever you're not in a good mood."

"Hm." Alex nodded nonchalantly. He drank everything in one gulp, before telling his butler, "I'm fine now, Don. I'm in a great mood tonight, so I don't need to drink myself to sleep."

The middle-aged butler named Don smiled, "I can see that, Sir. I'm happy for you."

The butler poured his glass until it was half full before stepping back.

Before he left, he glanced at Eve, who was still looking at her champagne glass in doubt. She sniffed it and frowned because she could smell the strong alcohol beneath the fragrant scent coming from the champagne.

She was definitely not suited to drink this, so Don asked, "Miss, I can make a hot chocolate for you if you want."

"No, no, I will drink this," Eve insisted.

"If you say so, Miss."

Don finally returned to his post, waiting to be called again.

Alex took another sip of his champagne while staring at Eve.

"Give me that glass, Eve. You are not into this. I'll get you a glass of water if you don't like hot chocolate anymore," Alex said as he tried to grab the champagne glass from Eve.

Eve quickly pulled her glass and exclaimed, "I told you I've built up my resistance. Stop trying to baby me!"

Alex had to admit that he was indeed babying Eve, but it was out of genuine concern. He knew all about Eve, including her almost nonexistent tolerance of alcohol, and he didn't want Eve to force herself to drink over a stupid reason.

But apparently, her pride was bigger than her logic. She drank everything in one gulp despite disliking it. She put the glass down and said proudly, "See? I can drink just fine. It's been two years since we broke up, Alex. You know nothing about me."
