Cannon fodder in the Interstellar

Chapter 302 - Neighbor Brother

The members of the elite team were all soldiers. Even though they were from different worlds, they all shared the same profession, which created an innate sense of camaraderie.

Especially the selfless spirit that Song Changlong displayed—though the elite team members might not be able to do the same, the more they saw it, the more they respected him.

Therefore, after Song Changlong and Li Zhongping stepped onto the RV’s rooftop terrace and Song Changlong introduced himself, Hebrew Adam stepped forward to shake their hands and said in stiff Chinese, “Hello, I am Hebrew Adam.”

“Thank you, Mr. Adam, for coming to our rescue,” Song Changlong said with genuine gratitude.

The reason Song Changlong had been brave enough to sacrifice himself for the greater good was because the situation had left him with no choice. It didn’t mean he was willing to sacrifice himself; he naturally felt grateful to those who had saved him.

Song Changlong, always serious, expressed his gratitude with his eyes, but his expression was still a bit stiff, and his smile looked somewhat unnatural.

“No need to thank us. We acted because we saw that you all were doing the right thing. We respected you as real men, so we stepped in,” Hebrew Adam said, his face equally stern.

As a prince, Hebrew Adam had his own sense of authority, and after these years, he had become accustomed to maintaining a serious demeanor.

However, from an onlooker’s perspective, each of them thought their leader was very gentle.

Liu Yang tried hard to hide his surprise. Three days ago, when he first saw these people, only Miss Manni could speak Chinese. The next day, the foreign group began picking up a few words, and by the third day, they could awkwardly converse with him.

Young Master Adam rarely spoke, and Liu Yang had thought he hadn’t learned Chinese. However, he was surprised to find that Hebrew Adam spoke so fluently.

“Captain Song, are you the big brother from the neighborhood that Kexin talks about?” Wang Miaomiao, ignoring Liu Yang’s jealousy and forgetting that she was afraid of Young Master Hebrew Adam, stared at Song Changlong for a while. Once their conversation paused, she couldn’t help but ask.

Song Changlong’s attention was entirely focused on Hebrew Adam. His way of observing people was different from Liu Yang’s.

When Song Changlong first saw this group, he noticed that Hebrew Adam had the highest combat ability and came from the best background. After talking with him, Song Changlong had a rough idea of Adam’s background and concluded that he must be from a noble family.

Most of Song Changlong’s attention was on Hebrew Adam, and a small part of it was on Ruo Manni. Naturally, he didn’t have time to notice anyone else.

Now, hearing Wang Miaomiao’s question, Song Changlong took a closer look at her and recognized her: “You’re Kexin’s college classmate?”

“Yes, Big Brother Song, hello!” Wang Miaomiao was very excited.

Meeting an old friend in the apocalypse could be either a good or a bad thing. But for Song Changlong, a soldier who could allow his comrades to go ahead and sacrifice himself to protect them, seeing Wang Miaomiao was a joyful moment.

“Big Brother Song, do you know anything about Kexin?” Wang Miaomiao asked eagerly.

“Kexin is at the B City base,” Song Changlong said steadily.

Finally confirming that Lin Kexin was safe and sound, Wang Miaomiao was overjoyed, while Ruo Manni felt a deep sense of melancholy.

This was truly not the same world as her past life.

Though she felt melancholic, Ruo Manni still noticed that when Song Changlong mentioned Kexin, there was a somewhat ambiguous look in Li Zhongping’s eyes.

Song Changlong’s father and Lin Kexin’s father were originally comrades who had shared life-and-death situations together. The two families had always lived in the military compound, so to Lin Kexin, Song Changlong was like an older brother.

The ambiguous expression on the face of Song Changlong’s deputy seemed to suggest that there was some unusual relationship between Song Changlong and Lin Kexin.

“Your team is very impressive. How did you form this group? Mr. Adam and his companions are so strong,” Song Changlong said.

“We were saved by them from mutated wolfdogs. Miss Manni came to look for Kexin, and we took the opportunity to stick with them, because Liu Yang is from A City and he wanted to return to find his parents,” Wang Miaomiao said, feeling a little embarrassed.

“Survivors from A City… Shortly after the apocalypse began, they were already relocated to the B City survivor base,” Song Changlong replied.

This was the official confirmation that, as long as their parents hadn’t turned into zombies due to the disease, they had already been rescued and moved to the B City base.

Liu Yang was overjoyed. The fact that B City’s survivor base had someone like Song Changlong, a soldier who still maintained his sense of justice, meant that at least this base wouldn’t be morally bankrupt.

Even if his parents were ordinary people, as long as they survived the usual hardships of the apocalypse, such as hunger and poor living conditions, they wouldn’t face inhumane treatment.

“Thank you. When the apocalypse started, we were thousands of miles away and couldn’t get back. The thing I worried about the most was my parents. Thank you for saving them,” Liu Yang said gratefully.

“In times like these, humanity has no path forward without unity,” Song Changlong sighed.

“Mr. Song is absolutely right,” Ruo Manni agreed, hoping to start a conversation with this world’s ‘neighbor brother’ to gather some information.

“Miss Manni, why are you looking for Kexin? What is your relationship with her? I noticed you two look quite alike,” Song Changlong asked.

It was partly because of this similarity that Song Changlong somewhat believed that Miss Manni was truly here for Kexin.

The young woman and Hebrew Adam seemed like a couple, and their noble-like demeanor made them appear extremely well-matched.

“We should be cousins, but I’ll only be sure when I meet the Lin family,” Ruo Manni said.

Song Changlong was likely a soldier at the B City survivor base and a person of authority, so Ruo Manni answered seriously.

“Where did you come from? It’s not that I want to interrogate you, but if you wish to enter the B City survivor base, these are routine procedures. Especially since your companions are all foreigners, they will check even more thoroughly,” Song Changlong asked solemnly.

“I’m not entirely clear about our own identities. We are orphans, adopted by a group and trained as mercenaries. However, since all twelve of us are barely adults, we’ve never appeared in public and have no official identity. This time, we were in isolated training on an island, but then we lost contact with the group and no one continued to supply us. That’s when we left the island ourselves. There was one woman in the group who took special care of me—she would be considered my foster mother. Last year, she showed me a video, which featured Lin Kexin and Wang Miaomiao walking around their university. That’s how I recognized Wang Miaomiao, and I came to her rescue,” Ruo Manni told the story smoothly.

“My companions and I lost contact with the group and don’t know how to find them. We have no family, no country, and we don’t know where to go. I remembered that my foster mother said that I might be cousins with Lin Kexin, and since Lin Kexin is Chinese, I decided to look for her first. After that, we’ll figure out where to go next.”

Ruo Manni, inspired by Liu Yang’s speculation about their background, had woven a story about their origins.

In times of peace, such a story would easily be seen through.

But in the apocalypse, even if Song Changlong and the others didn’t believe her, there would be no way to verify it.
