Cannon fodder in the Interstellar

Chapter 301 - Taking Action to Save

Song Changlong had a dark expression on his handsome face as he stood behind the large truck, watching the mutated animals chasing from the darkness. Every now and then, he raised his hand and fired a shot.

Song Changlong’s marksmanship was very precise. Each shot he fired would always bring down the shadow in front, but unfortunately, the one he most wanted to kill still tightly followed behind the truck. The bullets hitting it left no trace at all.

There were originally over two hundred mutated animals, but after they had been shooting at them, only a little more than a hundred remained. However, they had already fought a hard battle earlier, and their ammunition was running low. The biggest threat had still not been dealt with.

“Li Zhongping, take the eleven vehicles in front and accelerate immediately. We will cover the rear,” Song Changlong ordered decisively.

“Captain!” Li Zhongping’s voice trembled, full of struggle and reluctance.

At times like this, covering the rear meant sacrificing themselves. How could they calmly accept it?

“Follow orders and move quickly. Don’t make unnecessary sacrifices,” Song Changlong shouted.

If they didn’t leave now, the mutated animals, with no suppression from gunfire, would catch up, and none of them would be able to escape.

In such a critical moment, this was no time for weakness. Weakness meant even greater sacrifices. However, their lives were not just their own; the base desperately needed these supplies.

Li Zhongping gritted his teeth and commanded the others to speed up, while the truck that Song Changlong was on slowed down.

“Everyone, fire at will,” Song Changlong ordered.

At this point, the other three people in the truck also stopped conserving ammunition. They kept firing, no longer bothering to aim or waste shots. After a burst of wild shooting, they finally managed to suppress the swarm of mutated animals that had surged forward when Song Changlong had momentarily relaxed his fire to use the walkie-talkie.

Li Zhongping, jostling in the vehicle, watched as the distance between them and the vehicle behind grew larger, his heart filled with sorrow. From somewhere in the convoy, the faint sound of crying came through the walkie-talkie.

Every time they went on a mission, they would lose many brothers, but this time, it was their captain’s turn.

At that moment, the communications soldier in the front vehicle suddenly screamed into the walkie-talkie, “Deputy Captain, there are people ahead!”

Li Zhongping immediately stood up, crawled out of the vehicle’s sunroof, and used binoculars to look ahead. He instantly wondered if his eyes were deceiving him.

It wasn’t surprising that his seasoned soldiers would react with such alarm. In this world, for someone to be driving with lights on and cooking outdoors in the wild—wasn’t that clearly courting death?

Their convoy of over three hundred people had only been delayed due to the lack of a safe place to stop. They had been unlucky enough to encounter a vicious group of mutated animals, with the leader being a level-four mutated snake. Even their level-three ability captain couldn’t defeat it and had been forced to flee. In the end, their captain had to sever his own tail to escape…

Li Zhongping suppressed his sorrow, wanting to ignore these reckless young people, but they were soldiers after all. Even though human nature had changed greatly after the apocalypse, he still couldn’t remain completely indifferent.

“Warn them to leave quickly…”

Before Li Zhongping could finish speaking, he saw four figures swiftly approaching them, and in the blink of an eye, they passed by the vehicle he was in.

Li Zhongping thought he was seeing things. The communications soldier in the leading vehicle stammered, “Re-report, Deputy Captain, th-there are four young people running toward you…”

Li Zhongping stood frozen, realizing that he wasn’t seeing things—it was true, there were people running toward them. But how could that be? No one could run that fast. Were those four really humans? As they approached the reckless young people, Li Zhongping signaled the driver to slow down, leaned out of the window, and shouted, “Mutated animals are chasing from behind! You need to leave quickly!”

Looking at these righteous soldiers, Ruo Manni calmly said, “Our people have already killed that snake for your captain.”

Although her voice was soft, every soldier in the eleven military vehicles heard it. While they were somewhat skeptical, they all hoped that what she said was true.

Just then, the walkie-talkie suddenly crackled with Song Changlong’s voice, sounding oddly calm: “Zhongping, everyone stop and wait. The snake has been killed, and the mutated animals have been wiped out.”

Upon hearing their captain’s words, the soldiers who had been forced to retreat immediately cheered with joy.

It had been shortly after Song Changlong had ordered his comrades to leave first when they ran out of ammunition. He pulled out his military knife and waited for the mutated animals to close in.

As long as he could severely injure the level-four mutated snake, his comrades would be safe. The other mutated animals were only level-one or -two, and they wouldn’t be able to catch up with the convoy that had already gone far.

Although the mutated snake was of a high level, it was still a snake, and its speed was slower than that of a level-three wolfdog. If it were faster, they wouldn’t have had the chance to escape so far.

Just as Song Changlong was about to jump out of the vehicle and fight the mutated snake to the death, suddenly, four young people charged toward them, heading straight for the massive level-four mutated snake.

Song Changlong anxiously shouted, “That’s a level-four! Get out of the way!”

No sooner had he finished speaking than the boy at the front leaped high into the air, at least two to three meters off the ground, and swung a broadsword down forcefully at the mutated snake’s head.

The boy’s speed was incredibly fast, and with it being night, Song Changlong could only catch a rough glimpse. After the boy landed, the mutated snake’s head, which had been raised high, slammed heavily into the ground. The boy immediately rushed forward, raised his knife, and struck again.

The other three boys charged into the mutated animal swarm, swords in hand. Song Changlong and his three comrades quickly jumped out of the vehicle to assist, but they were surprised to find that the mutated snake’s head had already been severed by the boy. The three boys who had charged into the mutated animals’ midst had already knocked many of them down, and the remaining mutated animals, seeing the situation turning against them, fled in panic.

In less than five minutes after the four boys appeared, the mutated animals that had been chasing them for over two hours were either killed or scattered in retreat. The threat was completely resolved.

Song Changlong, Li Zhongping, and their more than 300 soldiers were all in a daze. How could such a group of boys and girls exist in this world? With such abilities, how had they trained to reach this level?

“No wonder they dared to camp out at night. I thought they were crazy, but it turns out they were fearless. These foreign boys and girls must have some background. It seems that the Chinese girl is their leader. With such experts, it would be great if they could stay at our base,” Li Zhongping said, his eyes bright.

Song Changlong had the same thought. “We should go thank them.”

Song Changlong and Li Zhongping walked over, and Ruo Manni quietly said to Hebrew Adam, “These two should be powerful figures in the military at the B City base.”

When the rainy season and winter come, it would be beneficial to make friends with a key figure from a base and find a place to settle within.

“These two are impressive,” Hebrew Adam nodded in approval.
