Chapter 4: Kicking Into Action
Zangetsu POV
It's been a while since I've lasted combated someone the last person I fought before losing my physical form would be Hagoromo. There are a range of abilities that I wish to test...but against a mere child it would simply be pointless for now I'll stick with just basic reshi manipulation and swordsmanship I thought.
I settled into a simple laid-back stance with one hand placed behind my back while my blade Tensa is outstretched in front of me.
Boruto meanwhile is observing the overall arena that we were standing in "what's the matter you punks scared?" Iwabe asked but Boruto shook his head clenching his fists in excitement "hell nah it's just that this kind of reminds me of a fighting ring! This is going to be fun" he cheered.
"Watch closely you, guys! This is a ninjutsu match according to the academy rules but don't worry I won't use this...otherwise you'd just die," Iwabe said gesturing to the staff like weapon impaled into the ground causing me to narrow my eyes.
"You don't need your weapon?" I asked tilting my head "bold I wonder if your fists alone can make up for that."
Iwabe smirked "you won't be wondering for long," he said
Boruto meanwhile was bouncing on the balls of his feet his usual grin plastered across his face. "alright, Zangetsu, let's show this guy what we're made of!" he exclaimed.
"Before we do so it would perhaps be wise to come up with a strategy," I commented standing side by side with him.
Boruto gave me a quick side glance his grin widening "strategy? Pfft hell no I am planning to go in and wing it!" he said charging right at Iwabe. I sighed at this...it would be a very long number of years before the boy understood to think first and then attack.
Iwabe quickly threw some shuriken's at the incoming Boruto who veered sharply to the left to dodge with the shuriken whizzing past him and embedding themselves into the ground with solid thunks.
Boruto's grin remained unbroken as he pushed forward landing a few blows that Iwabe managed to avoid. Iwabe moved to strike back but Boruto backflipped away to give himself some space.
Iwabe smirked barely unfazed by Boruto's attack "so you can at the very least keep up...I do wonder when the other punk will attack though or will he just cowardly continue to hide behind you," he called out in hopes of baiting me.
I ignored him watching as the two battled until he grabbed Boruto and tossed him at a pillar that would no doubt injure him greatly.
I instantly appeared in front of him using Hirenkyaku and placed him down "are you alright?" I asked.
Boruto coughed rubbing the back of his head as he sat up "yeah yeah... I'm fine," he muttered clearly frustrated at being thrown so easily his usual grin was replaced by a frown of determination "but this guy's tougher than he looks."
I nodded observing Iwabe's stance his confidence had grown though his smirk was now tinged with wariness. He hadn't seen me move until I was already in front of Boruto a fact that hadn't escaped his notice.
"Your reckless approach won't work against someone like him," I said to Boruto my tone calm but firm.
"You also lack precision, and your movements are far too predictable charging in without a plan is no better than offering yourself as a target," I continued.
Boruto groaned his frustration evident "geez you sound just like my old man fine what's your big plan then Zangetsu?" he asked.
I turned my attention to Iwabe who was watching us with a mixture of curiosity and impatience "observe, adapt, and exploit his weaknesses," I said simply "relying on brute force alone will only get you so far."
Iwabe laughed upon hearing this "big talk for someone who hasn't even tried to fight me yet are you actually planning to fight or are you just here to babysit instead?" he taunted again.
I exhaled slowly stepping forward "since you're so eager I shall indulge you," I replied.
With that I took a few steps forward my hand gripping Tensa lightly the blade remained angled toward the ground. Iwabe shifted into a defensive stance "alright punk let's see if you're as tough as you've made yourself out to be," he growled.
Before the last word even left his mouth though I vanished using Hirenkyaku to appear directly in front of him. The sheer speed of the technique caught him completely off guard his confident smirk dropped replaced by wide-eyed shock as I stood there, my blade mere inches from his chest.
"Do you still believe your fists are enough?" I asked softly.
Iwabe stumbled backward his composure faltering as he threw a wild punch in an attempt to catch me off guard. With minimal effort I shifted slightly to the side letting his fist pass harmlessly by. I tapped the flat edge of Tensa against his wrist forcing his hand down with precision.
"Your movements are too slow," I said appearing behind him in another blur of Hirenkyaku before he could turn "and your attacks lack control."
Iwabe whirled around, throwing a roundhouse kick aimed for my head this time I parried with the back of my hand effortlessly redirecting the blow as I slid past him. A faint trail of blue light marked the afterimage of my movement the reishi dissipating like mist.
"Hold still, dammit!" Iwabe shouted frustration creeping into his voice he threw a barrage of punches and kicks his strikes growing more frantic with each miss but no matter how fast or aggressive he became I remained out of reach.
Boruto watching from the sidelines let out a low whistle "man, Zangetsu's sure is making this look easy ya know," he muttered "Iwabe can't even touch him."
Iwabe growled his frustration reaching its peak "enough running around! Earth Style: Earth Spikes" he yelled channeling chakra into his fists. He then slammed his hands into the ground causing the terrain to shift as jagged rocks erupted toward me.
I raised Tensa calmly, channeling a small amount of reishi into the blade which for moment appeared black before returning back to a pure white color "Getsuga Tenshou," I calmly declared.
A crescent-shaped wave of energy burst forth carving through the rocks with surgical precision and dissipating the attack in an instant.
The force of the technique sent shockwaves through the air causing Iwabe to shield his face as the dust settled. When he looked up I was already standing in front of him, Tensa resting lightly against his neck.
"It's over," I said simply but Iwabe gritted his teeth in frustration his gaze shifting over to his staff. I raised an eyebrow of interest "interesting I thought you said you didn't need to use that particular weapon," I pointed out.
Iwabe ignored me in favor of rushing over to his weapon Boruto however also noticed what he was going to do "oh no, you don't," he muttered already forming a series of hand signs then with a puff of smoke three shadow clones appeared beside him.
Iwabe sprinted toward his staff determination etched on his face "you think your hot stuff huh? Let's see how tough you are when I'm armed!" he yelled reaching out for his weapon.
Boruto however was already one step ahead in a blur he dashed forward, his clones following closely.
Just as Iwabe's fingers brushed against his staff Boruto slid in front of him blocking the way. "Cowardly much? You were all talk about not needing this thing," Boruto taunted flashing his signature grin.
Iwabe growled his face twisting in anger "get out of my way, brat!" he shouted swinging a fist at Boruto.
Boruto ducked under the blow effortlessly "wow, desperate much? Not very cool of you," he teased hopping back. Iwabe snarled his temper boiling over "I am not uncool!" he shouted swinging at him with another punch.
This time Boruto's clones sprang into action two of them grabbed Iwabe's arms while the third landed a quick jab to his ribs, making him stumble.
"You little—!" Iwabe roared shaking off one clone and smashing another with a chakra-enhanced strike dispelling it. His victory was short-lived thought as the real Boruto reappeared behind him crouched low with a triumphant grin.
"There's no way we'd ever lose to someone like you!" Boruto exclaimed sweeping Iwabe's legs out from under him. Iwabe hit the ground hard momentarily dazed and before he could recover the remaining shadow clone pounced pinning him down.
I calmly walked over to the fallen boy with a shake of my head "I understand that your angry and bitter about not being a ninja yet despite having talent in both ninjutsu and taijutsu...but it is to be expected if all you did was just skip classes and not put any effort into it," I said.
Boruto shook his head "that's right not to mention you've been unjustly taking out your anger on the wrong people. If you really wanted to be a ninja you have to keep at it no matter how many times you failed but instead all you did was blame the times, classes, and acted like the whole world was against you when it really isn't!!" he exclaimed punching Iwabe in the face knocking him right out to the land of dreams.
It was silent for a moment until the whole student body cheered for us...well that is until Aburame-sensei came running in and everyone got into trouble, but I'd say it was over all worth it.
I finally settled that itch for a fight, Iwabe apologized to the class after regaining conscious, and was finally getting his act together I'd say it was a win-win for everyone I thought closing my eyes.
A faint light of spiritual energy warps around my body as I began to enter into another deep meditation.
I can barely feel the expansion of my energy reserves only just by a little. I estimate I'll need to keep doing this for another good chunk of the year maybe two to at least get it back to a size where I can consecutively activate my Almighty.
-end of chapter three-
what did you guys think?
Also the Quincy are still alive just not a large amount of them, but they are in hiding and Zangetsu has yet to call them out to him yet.
Zangetsu also has access to a wide arsenal of Schrifts just something to remember on top of his original power set.
