Blue lock: the true egoist

Chapter 17: A good duo

"We absolutely need to score." Our left winger said, his annoyance was obvious, since the beginning of the game he still haven't had any goal or assist and he knew that if this keeps going and we didn't win he wouldn't have any chance to be chosen.

"As if we didn't know that." Nathan replied, more frustrated than ever. Even him started to lose his calm after what happened.

"Let's just focus what we do best." I nodded towards Nathan. I also knew that if I didn't step up my game I wouldn't be chosen, what I did until now isn't enough to prove my worth.

Soon enough, we all got in our positions and the referee whistled to indicated that it was time for the kick off.

I passed the ball back to Nathan but this time I didn't immediately advance and instead I stayed back and supported Nathan while he was going up the field, now that my passes improved a lot I could allow myself to help in building up the offense.

With that we managed to get past their two strikers but soon enough we came face to face with Ricardo and another midfielder.

"Let's not risk it, it might be our last chance." I said to Nathan who then passed the ball to our left wing who was running on the side. He made use of his speed to surprise the player guarding him and made a big run towards their defense.

Both me and Nathan urged ourselves to follow him, I didn't plan to keep any bit of stamina and sprinted as fast as I could towards the goal.

Thanks to our left wing pulling all the attention on himself, both me Nathan and our right winger managed to get into great positions.

I looked around at where Nathan and our right winger were standing, each of them were guarded by a player but the defense was clearly not ready for this fast offense, they were all clearly panicked.

The only one who was still calm was the player guarding me, it was none other than Ricardo who managed to predict this fast offense and fall back in defense way faster than I expected, I didn't think he still had that much stamina left in him after playing for nearly an entirety game.

Him coming back to guard me wasn't part of my plans, but I knew that if I made use of my height advantage I might still be able to score over him so I didn't lose my confidence, I looked back at our winger who had the ball to make sign for him to pass it to me but that's when I noticed the look on his face.

His gaze was focused straight on the goal and he didn't even bother scanning his surroundings, he was clearly planning on a solo run. As soon as I saw that and understood what he was trying to do I ran straight towards the space that was in front of him with Ricardo following right behind me.

When our winger finally arrived in front of his defender he tried feigning a pass to Nathan then pushed the ball far in front of him.

That's the same move he did in every match, he knew his dribbling was bad so he only relied on his speed and passed the ball to himself, that's a very simplistic way to play but with his speed that would work on most people our age.

Right after tapping the ball in front of himself, he pushed the defender with his shoulder and sprinted towards the ball. He was clearly giving it his all in order to prove his worth and score.

Unfortunately for him the one to trap the ball was none other than me. I came running from the side and intercepted the ball while it was still moving at a fast pace.

"So you already knew that would happen huh? I should've known that your true weapon is your brain" Ricardo caught up to me and guarded me closely, he was still able to talk in a relaxed manner even at this point of the game.

"You really don't plan to leave me alone do you?" I smiled at him and passed the ball back to our winger who didn't stop running even after I intercepted his ball.

After seeing that no defender would be able to stop him Ricardo left me unguarded and went to place himself in front of our left wing.

"One two!" I yelled at him and started running from behind Ricardo's back.

"Stop him!" For the first time Ricardo panicked and yelled to the defender guarding Nathan.

The defender did as he was told and came running towards me but that was already way too late, our winger lobbed the ball back to me and started running.

He thought that by lobbing the ball back to me it would force me to pass it back to him and that he'd get the opportunity to score his first goal but all he did was make things easier for me.

I trapped the ball with my chest and didn't wait for it to go down and touch the ground but instead shot it as hard as I could.

Both of my trapping and my volley were above 50, it was what I considered to be my strongest weapon in offense. After I shot the ball I could see it go straight towards the right side of the goalie who clearly wasn't expecting such a shot.

After seeing that the ball was coming to me in a slow lob he started facing towards our winger whom he expected to get back the ball so I took that as an opportunity and I shot the opposite way.

He didn't have the time to even understand what happened before the sound of the whistle indicated that the score was once again tied.

4-4 in the 78th minute, this whole offense barely lasted 4 minutes and now we had 12 minutes to decide who the winner will be.

"We're a pretty good duo aren't we?" I high fived our winger who just scoffed at me and went back to his position.

"Stop teasing the poor boy and let's show them what an actual duo means." Nathan came up from behind me and said with a smile.

"I'll be counting on you then" I smiled back at him then we all went back to our side of the field.

I could see on their face that everyone was extremely tense. Not only our side but also the A team's players. For them losing meant that many of them would lose their place in the team. Even a tie might make some of them go down to the B team.

While most of them were stressing about all they had to lose our team's players knew that we had nothing to lose in this game, no matter the outcome we just have to do our best and to show off as much as we can.

As soon as the whistle was blown their striker passed the ball back to their second striker while our whole team went on the offensive.

While all of us gave 120% of ourselves in this game the other side was just trying to not make a mistake and get thrown out of the team.

Unfortunately that's the mindset which led to their downfall, one of their midfielder was being pressured by our winger so he hastily passed the ball to their striker, without even realizing that Pedro went up the field.

Pedro then easily intercepted the ball and passed it to Nathan who already started running to the offense.

"Let's do it Jude!" Nathan passed me the ball and smiled at me. With only 5 minutes left It was time for the final counterattack
