Chapter 44: Chapter 44
First, I decided to use the quiet version of the escape. So, after warning everyone not to sleep tonight, I went to prepare. Waiting for darkness was easy. But it was more difficult to quietly crush the metal to get into the hole I had made earlier. But little by little I managed to do it without leaving any traces.
And to lead sixty people one by one to the exit to the lake, while restoring the metal chamber, was damn hard. But I managed it practically the same morning. Making the boats a little bigger and putting ice on them was no problem.
And when everything was done and everyone was loaded into the boats, I remembered that I hadn't taken Katara and Sookie's mother with me. I felt ashamed because I had promised myself that I would get them out of here. But there's no time to waste now. The pulse and all the boats were around me. One more and they're rafted and anchored. Another and we're over the water. A few smooth movements and we're enveloped in steam, camouflaging us.
Now it's just a matter of doing the little things. With progressive movements of my hands, I slowly moved our boats into the passage I had made as soon as I arrived here. A few minutes and we crossed the boiling lake. The men were about to cheer when I silenced them all and led them to the exit.
Now came the hardest part. Getting to the mainland. The thing is, there were observation posts on top of the volcano, so it's not an option to swim during the day. The only option was to go now. So I explained it to the men. They were understanding and did not interfere.
After I had prepared myself and gathered strength, I lifted a huge slab, ten by ten by three, in an instant. I jumped on it and compressed it into a box. Theoretically, it's even capable of floating. But in practice, I froze a slab of ice at the bottom, the same dimensions, but one meter thick instead of three.
And basically everything was ready. So, after quickly loading everyone inside, I launched the ship. They say that when a ship is launched, it is given a name, and what name it will be, so that the ship will sail. Although when you look at this «Ship» you doubt very much that it will float at all, but here it is, floating. I thought about it and decided to name this ship Poseidon. Well, why not? Let's play with the contrast.
After tossing myself to the ground, landing neatly in the middle, and warning everyone to hold on to something, I began to accelerate. It was hard to move this thing, but I picked up enough speed to make it to the Fire Nation islands in 24 hours.
***
Of course, I could guess that I'd be out of luck here, too, considering I might have died a few times on the way to the Fire Nation. I got another call when I wandered around the Fire Nation for a while and ended up in one of the most secure prisons on the planet, since no one had ever escaped before.
And to top it off, we got caught in a fucking storm while we were sailing. Some of the waves were ten times the length of our boat. Apparently the local Poseidon wasn't too pleased when I named my wreck after him.
And it had all started so well. I created a small wave and we slowly began to accelerate. Gradually I increased the size of the wave, which increased our speed. I even had to freeze a small layer of ice on top because the wind was too strong. Eventually the sky darkened and the waves came up.
I didn't mind because the wind was a crosswind, which made it easier to hold the wave. But the sky was getting darker and the waves were getting higher. It was useless to fight the elements, we had to concentrate on not crashing the ship. It was a matter of a moment to make anchors out of the ground for everyone, which almost cost us all our lives because we were covered by the wave and the pressure threatened to crush the layer of ice on top. We had to surface quickly as air was also becoming scarce.
When we came out of the water and I saw what was happening from above, I felt sick to my stomach. The waves were about a hundred meters high and there were a lot of them. Almost groaning with frustration, I secured myself and built up the same layer of ice on the top as on the bottom, leaving only the air holes behind the boat.
After some thought, I built up a layer of ice around the entire boat. And the merry-go-round began. Up and down, normal flying. The speed was such that I couldn't slow down, so we were either going to hit the water or take off. I didn't know which was worse.
It's just that when we hit the water, the most important thing was to withstand the impact and strengthen the ice before the pressure crushed it completely.
When we were sent flying, however, I could push myself a bit and choose where I wanted to land. This was usually accompanied by aerobatics like the dead loop, barrel roll, corkscrew, and a few others I can't quite name.
The loads were prohibitive, so I had to support myself with healing magic and heal any damage immediately, and since it could happen all over my body, I had to completely cover myself in water. It was hard, but now I didn't have to worry too much about myself. Which made my piloting look scary from the outside.
