Chapter 41: Chapter 41

Getting to this island was problematic, but it was only the beginning. Only the first step of the plan. After resting for a while and having a snack, I started to look around the island itself. It was a small island with trees and fields. Obviously something was still growing here. There were also a lot of fruit trees on the island.

But the main attraction was the volcano. And it seems to me that it is active, just the water in it cools it down a little bit and does not make the lava erupt. But that doesn't make it any less dangerous.

I made an inconspicuous passage in the volcano, on the opposite side of the harbor, and quietly went inside and started thinking about how to cross this boiling lake. Freezing ice and floating on it was out of the question. The temperature is too high, it melts too fast, and a large volume is visible. So we do something else.

Back on the beach, I made a small boat out of dirt, something like a canoe, but without a top. I compacted it into a solid state and froze ice on the bottom. I'm a waterbender, so I don't need oars. I made a few of these in case I needed to pull someone out. And set sail. Since there was a layer between the ice and the boiling water, the ice didn't melt and it was fine. I swam after sunset.

Now the hardest part. Deciding which disguise to use to sneak in. I don't really care, though. It's all metal, so I can escape anyway. But first I decided to pretend to be a guard.

I spent two more weeks finding a guy with a similar build to mine, learning his habits and call signs. Basically, to learn as much as possible in a short time. Then it's a matter of technique. Wait until he's on duty, quietly walk up behind him and put him to sleep. Then take him to a secluded place, change his clothes, and I'm the guard.

This prison was interesting. It reminded me of Alcatraz from my last world. I'd never been there, but I'd seen pictures. And if I remember Korrectly, they were very similar.

Except this was a different kind of cell. Just a freezer. I guess it's hard work for fire and earth wizards. But for Waterbenders, it's a weapon. All in all, this prison is good for fire and earth wizards. It's not perfect, but it's good.

The good thing is, we have to come up with a plan to get more people out of here. That would require giving them access and distracting the guards. Or build underground passages to the right cells and get the people I need out at night.

Not knowing which plan would be better, I decided to prepare both. If one doesn't work, I'll use the other.

In reality, everything turned out to be a bit more complicated than I had originally expected. The thing is, pretending to be a guard, I had a lot of responsibilities, and if I did not want my quick exposure, I had to act very carefully. And that took a lot of time. It took me two weeks to dig the tunnels without anyone noticing.

I also hid weapons and guards' uniforms in various places where the prisoners went. Just in case. It was a lot of work, and I had to take care of the kid I'd borrowed the guard uniforms from.

But it was time for action. Waiting until I was assigned to duty, I quickly replaced myself with the guard kid and, so there would be no witnesses, took control of the blood and threw him into the water. He screamed a lot, but not for long. I didn't feel sorry for the boy because I had seen his kind in the war. It was enough for me not to feel sorry for him now.

And even though I'd covered my tracks, I still had to sneak in disguised as a prisoner. Just for fun, I decided to use my wartime alias. I wondered how fast the fire department would find out about me and how they would react.

Again, I didn't do anything clever, and after waiting for the next arrival of the ship with prisoners, I sneaked in quickly and quietly, added my name to the logbook, and snuck in with the prisoners who hadn't been detected. It didn't take much effort, but it took so much concentration to do it all without being noticed that the nosebleeds were flowing in rivers. And my body wasn't happy about the effort. My head was stiff and my legs ached.

Now it was only a matter of time. I realized that they don't really care who and how many swim with them, the main thing is to be all those who are written in their logbook. So there was no problem with that.

Except that the problems started when they took us on something like a cable car. The thing is, I wasn't feeling very well and I tried to treat myself. But it seems that my concentration limit was exhausted and I overexerted myself a bit, which caused my nose to bleed again. The guards were worried, but there was nothing they could do. But when we got there, I managed to stop the bleeding again. And I had a strange look. I had circles under my eyes, and I was covered in my own blood. It's actually a scary picture.

«Wat happened with him?» The chief of the prison asked, pointing at me.

«I have no idea, they already delivered him to us like this», our escort shrugged, «Maybe he had a fight with his colleagues and they beat him up like this.»

«If he dies here, I'll blame it all on you», the chief said, «Okay, give me the logbook.»

The deputy took the log, read the list, and did a roll call to determine who was who. When my name was called, I just mumbled as I put all my energy into healing.

«Heh, he'll live if he answers to his name», he went through the list again and as if trying to memorize it forever, he closed the log and turned and walked back, «Take them to the cells. The one with the blood on him, lead him carefully. I don't want him to die in the first few days.»

I was grabbed under the arms and dragged to a cell. What could I say? Not exactly my kind of place. 3 by 3 meters, four meters to the ceiling, and the ceiling is bars. Looks like I got a penthouse.
