Chapter 133: Chapter 122 Kumogi Playing Gun-Nac! 1
Monday 23 December 1991
Kumogi, a salaryman with a deep love for guns and tactical games like Metal Gear, was beyond excited. He had just purchased two games—Gun-Nac and Metroid—from a nearby electronics store. As someone who enjoyed shooting games and high-tech themes, he wasn't particularly interested in Ninja Gaiden, which had been released alongside these titles. Today was special—he had taken a rare day off from work just to immerse himself in these games.
After returning home, Kumogi wasted no time. He eagerly opened the Gun-Nac box, revealing the usual four items inside: the game cartridge, the manual, ZEPS Volume 4, and a small black and gray Z-card. He casually glanced at the Z-card, which had a strange message written on it:
"When the time comes, don't hit—just dodge, and I might help you."
Kumogi raised an eyebrow. "The hell does that mean? Don't hit? Whatever…" he muttered before slotting the cartridge into his ZEPS console and booting up the game.
The screen lit up, and the game's story began:
"In the vast universe, far away, there is a peaceful nation consisting of seven planets orbiting around an artificial sun. Their peace, however, is about to be shattered. Animals, plants, and factory products have begun attacking people, throwing the nation into chaos without an apparent reason. A conference of representatives from the seven planets requests the Space Police to solve the matter. A capable commander with the codename Gun-Nac is summoned. His mission: investigate the eight areas and restore peace to the nation. Rumors have it that a powerful invader in one of the eight areas is generating all the threats..."
Kumogi grinned. "Whoa! Wild story, hehehe." With that, he selected "Start" and dived in.
The game instantly hooked him. The variety of weapons was exhilarating—from crescent moon bullets with unpredictable trajectories to powerful laser beams and flamethrowers. He quickly discovered he could upgrade his weapons by collecting identical power-ups or number upgrades. The bomb system was equally exciting:
W-Bomb: Released four water-based projectiles that continuously damaged enemies.F-Bomb: Created a ring of fire spots, useful for defense.B-Bomb: A long, thin tornado swept across the screen, wiping out enemies.T-Bomb: A small bolt that ricocheted at sharp angles, covering more area.
"Oh my god, this is super fun!" Kumogi exclaimed, fully engrossed in the game.
He played skillfully, dodging enemy fire while obliterating waves of foes. Eventually, he reached the first stage's final boss: Rabbit Talatta, a massive robotic rabbit that launched carrot missiles and summoned rabbit minions that fired similar projectiles. Kumogi nimbly dodged the onslaught while unloading a barrage of attacks. The boss occasionally dropped bomb power-ups, which he used strategically. After an intense fight, he emerged victorious.
"Hah! Take that, you oversized bunny!" he cheered before advancing to the next stage.
The second stage, Fire Star, brought new challenges. He fought through waves of enemies until facing Moving King Kaifudo, a bizarre statue with elongated arms. Though challenging, Kumogi managed to defeat it with minimal struggle.
But then came the third stage: Aqua Star. The moment he encountered the boss, Octopus Rock-Chan, Giant octopus with Huge Eyes!, he knew he was in trouble. The giant octopus submerged itself underwater before resurfacing, spraying a relentless storm of projectiles.
"Goddamn, this is really hard! Why did the difficulty suddenly spike!?" Kumogi shouted in frustration as he lost life after life.
He gritted his teeth and tried again. And again. And again. Finally, after multiple attempts, he found the right rhythm and defeated the octopus boss.
"YES! Finally!" he shouted, pumping his fist in victory.
Determined to keep going, he advanced to Tree Star, home to The Mandagora—a monstrous tree-like creature resembling a baby tree. Thanks to the grueling battle against Octopus Rock-Chan, Kumogi had significantly improved his reflexes. He defeated The Mandagora on his first try after he clear the before boss stage.
"YEAH! First try, baby!" he roared, feeling the rush of success.
Next up was Gold Star, which housed two bosses: Maneki Neko, a lucky cat statue with moving paws, and Golden Robot, a tricky opponent that could camouflage itself and throw debris at Kumogi.
He easily defeated Maneki Neko, he then proceed the stages to fight Golden Robot but Golden Robot was a nightmare.
"What the hell?! That's unfair as hell!" he yelled as the robot kept disappearing and launching devastating attacks.
Despite his frustration, he persevered. After countless retries, he finally took it down.
"Ugh… That was brutal… but I did it!" he sighed in relief.
His next destination was Clay Star, where he faced Earth Golem—a towering, totem-like monster with a face. Its attack patterns were reminiscent of Octopus Rock-Chan, but even worse. Kumogi struggled immensely.
"Oh my god! This shitty golem!" he groaned, losing over and over again.
But he refused to give up. With sheer determination, he kept trying until, at last, he emerged victorious.
"YES! FINALLY! You piece of rock!" he shouted at the screen.
Despite feeling exhausted, he pressed on to Sun Star, the next stage. He fought his way through hordes of enemies until he reached Crazy Crescent Moon, the final boss. The moment he saw it—a grinning, yellow crescent moon—he felt an overwhelming urge to punch it.
"Oh, this thing is gonna piss me off, I can already tell…" he muttered.
The boss was incredibly fast, darting across the screen and unleashing relentless waves of projectiles. Kumogi struggled to keep up, barely managing to dodge its attacks.
"DAMN!" he screamed as his character exploded on the screen. Frustrated, he threw his controller onto a pillow. He had been playing for over five hours and was completely drained.
"I need a break…" he muttered, deciding to save his progress and turn off the console. His stomach growled, reminding him that he hadn't eaten in hours.
Stretching, he grabbed his wallet and headed outside to find something to eat. He knew he'd be back soon—he wasn't done with Gun-Nac just yet.
