Chapter 127: Chapter 117: Ninja Gaiden, Gun-Nac, and Metroid Release!
Saturday, December 21, 1991
As always, Sakaki go to Dekapon Electronics Very early!. Why? Because today marked the highly anticipated release of three new ZEPS games! He couldn't wait to spend his entire weekend playing them. His boss, Toki-san, had also given him a special task: buy four copies of each game for the ZEPS rental section in Bakudan Arcade. Of course, Sakaki was more than happy to oblige—especially since Toki had even thrown in a small bonus.
Thinking he'd beat everyone to the front of the line, Sakaki arrived at 5:00 AM, well ahead of the store's 8:30 AM opening. But to his shock, there were already people ahead of him—some even lying on the ground with pillows, clearly having camped out overnight!
"What the hell?! How am I not the first as usual!?" he muttered, exasperated. But he quickly sighed in acceptance. ZEPS games always sold out in mere hours, and if anything, this just proved how popular they had become. He simply had to endure the wait.
As the hours passed, the anticipation in the air grew thick. Then, at exactly 8:30 AM, the doors of Dekapon Electronics swung open, and the crowd surged forward. Sakaki grinned as his turn came up. He wasted no time in purchasing five complete sets of the new ZEPS games, quickly paying before bolting towards Bakudan Arcade to hand over four sets to Toki.
"Here, Toki-san! Four of each game!" he said, panting slightly from his sprint.
Toki took the games with a knowing grin. "Good work, boy. These are gonna fly off the shelves."
With that done, Sakaki wasted no time. With his own set of games safely in his bag, he dashed back home, his excitement reaching its peak. Today was going to be a legendary gaming session.
Once inside his room, he eagerly unboxed the games. As expected, each one came with four key items: the game cartridge, a detailed guidebook, the latest issue of ZEPS Volume 4, and a Black Gray Z-Card. Sakaki always made it a habit to inhale the fresh scent of a new guidebook before flipping through its pages. He then glanced at the ZEPS magazine, which now had an updated list featuring the three newly released titles.
Finally, his eyes landed on the Z-Card. These cards always contained cryptic messages hinting at hidden secrets or easter eggs within the game. This one read:
"You might see me fighting, but I will not see you."
Sakaki furrowed his brows. "Hmm? Cryptic as always, Zabo-man, my bro." A wide grin spread across his face. He couldn't wait to uncover the secrets hidden in these games. Would Zabo-man play a major role in them, or just be a minor cameo?
Without further hesitation, he grabbed his first game—Ninja Gaiden—and inserted the cartridge into his ZEPS console.
The opening cinematic played:
A red ninja and a gray ninja faced off in a vast grass field. The tension between them was palpable. In an instant, both warriors lunged at each other, swords clashing in a brilliant spark of steel. Then—one fatal strike! The red ninja staggered and fell to the ground.
The screen faded to black, and then a solemn narration began:
Ryu (voiceover): "With whom did Father have a duel and lose? For what reason did he fight and die? Even I don't know for sure."
The scene shifted to Ryu Hayabusa holding a letter, its contents displayed on-screen:
"Ryu, I am on my way to a life-or-death duel. If it is destiny that I do not return, you are to take the Dragon Sword of the Hayabusa family and go to America. Find the archaeologist, Walter Smith. Be brave, my son."
Cut to Ryu, now wearing his mask, determination burning in his eyes.
Ryu: "I will get my revenge!"
Sakaki's eyes widened in amazement. "Whoa! This is so cool!"
Then, the gameplay began.
To be continued…
