Chapter 79: Being Played
Damien arched a brow. He wondered that in between caring about their dignity and reputation, the healers even had the time to care for the ones who were in need of their help.
He hated being taunted and he hated being treated like he was beneath others just because his position and status weren't as good as theirs. And Damien had plenty of experience in handling bullies like Azriel who relied on their big daddies behind them. He smiled at the man before turning to look at Xavier. "Xavier, what do you think you are doing?
Don't you know that men as old as him sometimes go senile? You shouldn't treat a man who has lost his mind so heavily."
….
"Are you calling me crazy?" Azriel seemed to have cottoned on to what Damien was trying to say. His face turned red with embarrassment and anger.
Damien gave the man a wicked grin. "Aww man, it seems like you still have your wits intact. With how you were going on and on about reputation, dignity and whatnot while not caring about the life and death of your patient, I thought that you had lost your mind."
He couldn't help it, this man reminded him of every bully that he had ever faced. From his senior resident doctors and those officials and higher-ups, including his landlord.
They all looked down at him, treating him as if he was a foolish bastard. Just because he didn't have parents to back his case.
"You have some really bold nerve for a man who only knows how to make bold claims," Azriel sneered. "I will see how long you can stay like that once I am done filing a complaint against you in the council. Once it's filed— you can forget about becoming a healer." He snapped his fingers and commented, "Just like that.. mark my words."
"Who said that I can't back my claim," Damien rolled his eyes as he turned on his feet and headed over to the bed where Sigurd was lying. "Step aside."
As soon as he finished speaking, there was another snort behind him followed by Azriel's snarky sneers
"Lord Damien?" Adikus peered up at Damien through his teary eyes. What's the matter?"
"Why are you asking me this?" Damien raised his brow, he casually shrugged and stated, "I thought that you wanted to save his life. Is that no longer the case?"
His words caused everyone to raise their heads and look at him in surprise. Even Azriel was too stunned to speak.
"You— you mean .. you have the blood replenishing pill?" Adikus asked looking surprised by Damien's words.
"I don't have the pill but I do have another way," replied Damien as he summoned the blood transfusion kit. He looked at Adikus and asked, "Didn't you say that you and Sigurd are closely related?"
That's right… the two of us are from the same litter," replied Adikus.
Damien nodded as he reached his hand out and said to Adikus, "Let me take a little blood from you. We will run a test if your blood group is similar to that of Sigurd. If it is the same then you can then donate blood to Sigurd."
Adikus didn't understand what Damien was saying to him. But he did understand one thing and that was — he could share his blood with Sigurd which would then save Sigurd's life.
"Sure!" Adikus agreed. As long as he could save Sigurd's life nothing else mattered.
Once the dog beastman agreed, the rest of the process was much simpler. All Damien needed to do was to draw enough blood for Dan to run a test which didn't take more than three minutes.
And just as Damien expected and hoped, the blood group of Adikus and Sigurd was the same.
He heaved a sigh of relief before drawing two bags of blood from Adikus. The dog beastman wanted him to take more but Damien refused. Even if the beastmen were stronger than humans, he dared not to test their limits.
With the blood drawn and prepared, Damien attained the fine needle in the arm of Sigurd before attaching the other end to the bag.
He waited for the fine needle to start working as the conduit for the new blood and the second it started working, Damien stepped away leaving Dan to monitor the vitals of the beastman lying on the bed.
Damien sat down on the chair after he was done, however, no one spoke. They were all eying the weird set of equipment that Damien had pulled out of nowhere.
In the end, Gina was the first one to speak, "Lord Damien what is this — thing? What are you doing with it?"
"Hmm?" Damien turned to look at the woman who had spoken. Apparently, nobody could understand his actions which wasn't a surprise as this world only relied on pills, potions or spells to treat wounds. "This is called blood transfusion."
He explained the workings of the blood transfusion system while the other listened in awe. They had never seen anything like this before and found it truly revolutionary, even Azriel couldn't help but ask, "Where can this thing be bought?"
"You can't buy this," Damien raised a brow and answered. "This is something that only I own." He had used all of his precious points for this thing— what was Azriel even talking about?
If it was that easy to purchase then why would he use his precious, hard-to-come-by points?
Azriel glanced at Damien as if he didn't believe him while eyeing the set of equipment like he wanted to etch them in his memory.
Damien didn't say anything nor did he stop the man. If Azriel could recreate the entire system he would hand it to him. At least Azriel had the decency to show off his greediness and ambitions.
Unlike him, William had pretended to be his friend and mentor before stabbing him in the back. More than that, Damien had a feeling that someone was actually pulling a William on him while hiding behind the scenes.
The nightmares that he was getting from the last few days were getting more and more vibrant and vivid. Which made him confused and mad, like he was being used by someone again.
