Chapter 16
After confirming with Chen Jie, Mu Ci immediately started packing his belongings.
He had come to this world alone and had only been living here for a little over a month, but Gu Huai had bought him many things. Mu Ci found a small suitcase and packed only a few of his everyday clothes, leaving the rest in the room.
Once he finished these tasks, he didn’t waste any time and started searching for useful information on the internet.
Mu Ci wasn’t familiar with the outside world, and moving out so suddenly presented challenges. However, he was at least an adult and believed he could manage, even if it meant stumbling through the process.
Mu Ci was fortunate that Gu Huai had taught him how to use the internet. Now, he could find information about anything he needed.
Half an hour later, a maid knocked on his door and invited him to have lunch. Mu Ci didn’t want to see Gu Huai at all, especially after the intimate contact from the previous night that he couldn’t bring himself to mention. Mu Ci felt a chill in his heart.
However, he couldn’t stay holed up in his bedroom forever. After careful consideration, Mu Ci put on a turtleneck sweater and wrapped himself up tightly before heading downstairs.
Gu Huai was already waiting in the dining room. When he saw Mu Ci enter, he smiled and even pulled out Mu Ci’s chair with a composed expression, as if nothing embarrassing had happened the previous night.
Gu Huai acted so casually that Mu Ci found himself unable to say anything. He greeted Gu Huai in a hushed tone and sat down to eat in silence.
Gu Huai talked and laughed as if it was a regular day, but Mu Ci’s mind was in turmoil. They had engaged in such intimate acts at this very dining table last night, and the thought of it turned Mu Ci’s ears crimson.
How could Gu Huai act so have composed?
Mu Ci secretly observed him and wondered if Gu Huai was so nonchalant because he had experienced such encounters frequently.
Despite being twenty-three years old, Mu Ci couldn’t deny that last night was indeed his first experience. He had woken up this morning feeling genuinely anxious.
After the somewhat uneasy lunch, Mu Ci returned to his room without uttering a word.
Gu Huai wasn’t surprised by his silence. After all, their intimate encounter after drinking might have left Mu Ci feeling uneasy. Gu Huai understood that Mu Ci needed some time to process it.
So, Gu Huai proceeded to the study to review documents as usual. What he didn’t anticipate was that, at three o’clock in the afternoon, Mu Ci knocked on the door of his study.
Gu Huai was genuinely taken aback, “I thought you didn’t want to see me right now.”
Mu Ci remained silent for a moment, then took a few cautious steps inside, keeping a safe and appropriate distance from Gu Huai.
“I’ve come to bid farewell to you.”
Gu Huai narrowed his eyes slightly with an inscrutable expression, “Farewell?”
“Yes,” Mu Ci gazed at Gu Huai calmly. “I’ve found a job and will be moving out tomorrow… I’m very thankful for the care you’ve provided these days. Once I’m settled in the future, I’ll gradually repay you.”
Gu Huai appeared to have been expecting this. He raised an intrigued eyebrow. “Repay? You do know that Jason’s studio is also affiliated with Hanhai, right?”
Mu Ci was momentarily taken aback, perhaps because he couldn’t understand how Gu Huai had quickly discovered his plans. However, this surprise was fleeting. Mu Ci understood that he couldn’t falter when confronting Gu Huai. Both might appear gentle, but they were locked in a subtle power struggle.
“Yes, Young Master Gu, I’m aware, but Mr. Chen Jie has already agreed to hire me.”
Mu Ci scrutinized Gu Huai’s expression carefully, but to his surprise, he saw Gu Huai laughing.
However, that smile was cold. Mu Ci had never seen Gu Huai appear so menacing, and he instinctively took a step back.
Gu Huai casually tapped the table, his lips curling with deep sarcasm. “Mu Ci, do you truly believe that, in modern society, a verbal agreement holds any weight? People from ancient times were so naive; it’s almost endearing.”
Mu Ci remained silent, but his eyes clearly revealed his unhappiness.
He was indeed simple, openly expressing his emotions, and he possessed a strong sense of self-esteem, which meant he could easily become angry or hurt.
Gu Huai could discern every shift in his expressions. Conquering Mu Ci was as easy as picking something from a basket. Yet, Gu Huai wasn’t keen on ending the game so swiftly. He wanted to provoke a few more reactions from this man, to see him get angry and upset, yet still unable to resist.
“In reality, with just one phone call, I can have Jason fire you. With a few clicks of my fingers, I can make it so you can’t find any work here. Without me, you’ll be left with nothing but life on the streets.” He paused and then wore a wicked smile, “Of course, you do have a pretty face, and you might end up in the red-light district. Then you’ll realize that I’ve actually been quite good to you.”
When Gu Huai delivered these words, Mu Ci’s complexion turned completely pale.
If there had been any semblance of civility between them before, Gu Huai had now shattered that illusion into pieces. He was unbridled, treating Mu Ci with the disdain of a superior.
Hi nature laid bare.
“You…” Mu Ci opened his mouth and seemed to muster great effort to speak. “I understand now. You weren’t really drunk last night, were you? You deliberately got me intoxicated, you…”
As he spoke, his posture remained remarkably upright, but he couldn’t help but feel shaken. Gu Huai gazed at him with profound intent and admitted somberly, “Yes, that’s right.”
They had broken up now, and the floral diamond ring was rendered meaningless. Gu Huai was determined to pursue what he desired, even if it meant using ruthless and cruel methods. Mere pretense of gentleness and respect no longer held any value for him.
“I’ve played the role of a good person for long enough, Mu Ci. I no longer wish to pretend.”
Mu Ci stared at him in shock, finding it incredibly difficult to accept this reality. The man in front of him had finally discarded his gentle and dependable facade, revealing his true and ferocious nature underneath.
In this moment, Mu Ci realized that their so-called equal relationship had been built on mere politeness. Once this fragile arrangement crumbled, Gu Huai’s manipulation of him was as effortless as squashing an ant.
Gu Huai wielded such power that Mu Ci felt utterly powerless. For the first time, he was trapped in a dire situation.
“What do you want?” Mu Ci’s voice was hoarse and tinged with weariness.
“It’s quite simple; just sign this.” Gu Huai retrieved a document he had prepared earlier from his desk and placed it on the table. “You need to leave your fingerprints.”
Mu Ci frowned and examined the document, momentarily stunned. “An engagement contracts? I don’t want to marry you!”
“You have no choice, be good, Mu Ci.” Gu Huai did his best to soften his tone, attempting to coax him. However, both of them understood that this was a genuine threat.
“I won’t sign it. What do you intend to do? Kill me?” Mu Ci stared at him coldly.
He didn’t realize that he was a person without legal identity, and even if he signed, it would hold no legal weight. From childhood, Mu Ci had been taught that once you signed, it became a binding commitment, and he would never enter into a marriage agreement with this man!
However, Gu Huai found his obstinacy absurd. He stood up, placed his hands on the desk, leaned closer, almost face-to-face with Mu Ci. “No, my love, I won’t kill you, but I have other ways to make you sign willingly.”
He tapped his phone’s screen, opened his photo album, displayed it in front of Mu Ci, and shook it provocatively.
Mu Ci was left momentarily stunned, his face drained of color, and his body almost gave way.
