Chapter 13
This sleep was the most peaceful he had ever had since living on a desert island.
It was already three o’clock in the morning when he woke up.
As soon as he moved, the black snake opened its eyes and wrapped its tail around his ankle while looking at him faintly.
Wan Zhong sat up with his head hanging down, hugging his knees and curling up into a ball, looking pale and weak.
He gently touched the black snake’s tail with his round toes and asked, “Handsome snake, can you help me bring my clothes in?”
The black snake stared at the spring light in the seam of Wan Zhong’s legs and stretched out its tail outside the cave.
Clothes that had been exposed to the sun were a little hot to the touch.
Wan Zhong secretly rubbed his own underwear with several holes on it and put it on the cold tail of the black snake to cool down. Seeing the black snake spitting out snake tongue and squinting at him, he hurriedly turned his back and put on the cool underwear.
After taking a sneak look at it, he put on his shirt and pants.
He didn’t know if the black snake understood his intention of doing this, but it didn’t refuse anyway. It even used its tail to wrap up his shoes, which were hot from the sun, and put them on its cold scales.
Wan Zhong sat in the circle formed by the black snake’s tail, not keeping distance from it as usual, nor avoiding its sight.
He raised his eyes to look at its dark green vertical pupils without any emotion, raised a friendly smile on his lips, and took the initiative to talk to it, “Thanks to your care these days, I feel much better. We have been together for so long, and you still don’t know that my name is – Wan Zhong.”
Wan Zhong deliberately said his name very slowly and loudly per words. As he spoke, he wrote on the black snake’s tail with his fingers, trying to make it remember his name.
“Because grandpa picked me up in the evening, right next to the clock in a broken temple, so he named me Wan Zhong.”
The black snake: “…” ‘Then why not call you Wan – Pomiao (broken temple)?
[晚(wǎn): evening; 破(pò): broken; 廟 (miào): temple]
Wan Zhong asked the black snake: “How is it? Do you think this name sounds good?”
The black snake spit out snake tongue and didn’t seem to be very interested in this topic.
Wan Zhong didn’t mind either; he just wanted to interact with it. Like teasing cats and dogs, he touched the tail of the black snake, trying to have more affection with it.
The black snake was also very smart. It rolled up Wan Zhong and asked him to ride on it and play like on the slide.
.
Scratch!
After a sound, today’s interaction between one person and one snake ended.
The problem was there was air leaking from Wan Zhong’s poor underwear.
Because the black snake wouldn’t allow Wan Zhong to bring messy things into the snake’s nest, Wan Zhong found a vent on a nearby higher hillside and dug a cellar.
It was more than two meters deep and only had a few cubic meters of space, which was enough for the time being.
Wan Zhong dried a lot of broad leaves and stuck them in the cellar to prevent moisture. Then, he wrapped the dried meat and the edible snake fruits and black dates with herbs and put them in.
The three hard and sharp chicken claws could be used as hooks when inserted into the wall.
As for the chicken skin blanket…
The black snake couldn’t tolerate it, and it wasn’t allowed to be used in the cave as bedding.
After thinking about it, Wan Zhong plucked out the feathers on it, trimmed the edges slightly with a knife, and prepared to sew it up to put things in it.
Wan Zhong found a lot of vines, tree roots, and various grasses to make thread substitutes. But they were either too thick or broke when pulled, making them useless.
In the end, the black snake lying on the tree couldn’t stand it anymore. It tapped Wan Zhong’s thin waist with its tail and also tapped the scraps he cut off when trimming the chicken skin, indicating that he could use that.
Wan Zhong immediately slapped his forehead and suddenly realized: “Look at me, I’m stupid, why didn’t I think of this?” As he spoke, he touched the tail of the black snake surrounding him twice, like he was stroking a dog, and looked up at it with a smile. “Handsome snake, you are so smart!”
The black snake: “~~~”
He had always been like this recently.
Always confessing to it, always wooing it.
He always touches its tail~
The black snake twists its body very reservedly, shakes its head, and looks in the mirror.
[Mirror, mirror.]
[You can also see how much he likes me, right?]
[Heehee~~~]
Wan Zhong looked at the black snake twisting and turning on the tree and said to himself that the black snake was really liked the flattering, and his strategy was also very effective. Their relationship was obviously much closer these days, and he felt much more relaxed when he treated it like a pet, like a cat or dog.
Wan Zhong swept away the falling leaves above his head, found a comfortable sitting position leaning on the tail of the black snake, and continued his work.
The skin of the three-legged chicken was very wear-resistant and tough. Even as scrap material, it was like a strengthened version of a rubber band, not easily breaking no matter how it was pulled.
Wan Zhong twisted the scraps into a rope of moderate thickness, passed it through the holes left after plucking the feathers from the chicken skin, and tied it like shoelaces. The completely peeled chicken skin became a large sack that was light and could be packed.
Wan Zhong looked at the freshly made chicken skin bag in his hand with satisfaction and put a few stones in to test its strength.
Hmm~
The bag was very strong, and the area where the feathers were pulled out reveals honeycomb-like holes under the pull of gravity, which looked very breathable. Perhaps, in addition to being used to hold things, it could also be made into clothes.
Wan Zhong hung the prepared chicken skin bag on a branch and began to cut a branch as thick as a wrist.
He rounded and straightened it, cut one end into a tapered shape, and then wrapped the gorgeous feathers around a stick with the remaining scraps of chicken skin, trying to imitate his grandpa and made it into a broom.
During the completion process, Wan Zhong inevitably thought of some things.
.
If grandpa knew the news that he fell into the sea, would he be very sad?
The old man had a bad heart, and what would happen if he is stimulated? Originally, he planned to ask his brother to pay for his grandfather’s heart transplant surgery after meeting his rich brother. Now that he had left and never returned, there was no news in the mountains.
If no one informed his grandfather that he fell into the sea, would his grandfather think that he abandoned him because he disliked being poor and loved being rich? Grandpa had no children and adopted him as his grandson. What would he do with the rest of his life?
These things had been weighing on Wan Zhong’s heart for a long time. He had deliberately put them behind him to avoid being depressed and losing control of himself. Now that his hope of returning home was gone, he didn’t want to think, but it was hard to ignore it.
Wan Zhong raised his head to hold back the sourness in his eyes.
He picked up the broom and tried it. As soon as he swept, the feathers completely fell off the stick.
Wan Zhong was in a bad mood, so he put the feathers and sticks in the cellar and planned to continue improving them another day.
He climbed up the cliff and rearranged the ‘SOS’ rescue signal that had been blown away by the wind. After staring blankly at the boundless sea in the distance for a while, he came under the tree to look for the black snake, who was looking at the mirror happily.
“Handsome snake~”
Wan Zhong hugged the black snake’s tail and touched it, saying: “Can you lend me a few more tools? I’ll clean them and return them to you after use. They won’t be damaged, okay?”
When he was digging the cellar, he borrowed a gold hoe from the black snake, and the black snake happily agreed this time.
Wan Zhong thanked it hurriedly: “Thank you, handsome big snake. I know you are the best.”
The black snake swung the tip of its tail in Wan Zhong’s palm, lowered its body as a reward, and licked his lip corners.
Wan Zhong smiled and pushed it: “Handsome snake, you can’t do this~ Ugh!”
The black snake used its forked snake tongue to pry open Wan Zhong’s shell teeth, drove forward with its long tongue, and licked inside.
