Chapter 33: 32. Pizza Sassy's and The Starchy radio show
**POV: Finn the Human**
"Hey, Jake, take the lead," Finn said as he continued to observe the candy people and the buildings of the Candy Kingdom.
From a passing couple of jellybean people to a muscular cupcake guy, everyone was engaged in different conversations, happily going about their day-to-day lives.
"Hey, check out my muscles!" one of them called out.
"Hahaha! I can see my reflection!" another replied.
"You, you, you, you!" exclaimed a pair of who Finn believed to be candy Teens.
Finn had to admit that they weren't the smartest bunch, but at least they were happy. He had immediately noticed when he entered the Kingdom that there was a persistent sweet scent in the air. Coming from all around.
From the building and from the candy people. He wondered what type of candy the buildings were made of that allowed them to exist for so long. It had to be some tough candy!
"Okay, Finn, leave it all to me," Jake said, snapping out of whatever trance he was in. He finally took the lead. "Let me show you around a bit, Finn. Just to make sure you don't get lost." A hat appeared above his head, and he grew to Finn's height, his body transforming into a classic salary worker outfit.
"To your left, you'll see the Candy Kingdom Hospital, run by some of the most professional doctors in the kingdom," Jake pointed to a building that, not surprisingly, looked like a hospital.
"If you ever get hurt, make sure to drop by. "
"And right beside it, you'll see the Candy Kingdom Mental Hospital, catering to the mentally ill and the elderly," Jake said, pointing to a building next to it. He said this while at the same time his other hand pointed to his head, and he made the motion to show that crazies were mostly in there.
They continued further, approaching a small bridge, and Jake got into action once again.
"Up ahead, you'll see the Candy Kingdom Drug Store. So, if you're ever sick, drop by for your medication," he pointed at the small building as they finally made their way over the bridge.
The journey was mostly short from what Finn had noticed. And from the buildings and stores, he reasoned that this was a sort of health section they had passed through seeing that they were little other business other than those dealing with either medicine or health
"And to our final destination! Up ahead is Pizza Sassy's establishment, offering some of the best pizza in the whole of Ooo. I hope everyone is satisfied with the tour!"
They had finally reached their destination.
**LOCATION: Pizza Sassy's**
The building, like the others in the Candy Kingdom, was made of candy. At least it looked like peppermint to Finn, with its red, white, and green colors.
Next to the pizza shop was a small open garage with a red car decorated with a pizza on the roof.
Finally, the name of the pizza shop was written in red peppermint candy.
"SNIFF, SNIFF [GROWWWL]," Jake's stomach made an exaggerated growl as hungry shapes started forming on his belly.
His nose grew proportionally as he took a deep sniff of the air, and his mouth immediately watered. Finn could see stars glowing in his eyes.
"Finn, let's go in already!" Jake said in a whining voice. Finn agreed and pushed open the green door to enter the pizza shop.
"Stop being a crybaby; I'm also hungry," Finn answered jokingly as he took in his surroundings.
The first thing he noted was that the building was surprisingly empty, and the second was how well arranged the place was, from its mismatched red and white floor to the green peppermint support pillars.
Finn could see that there were only four workers, all pizza people, recognized by their crusty outer layer that somehow looked like hair, with their inner dough resembling faces.
Jake was already at the counter placing an order with one of the pizza guys, a burly man who surprisingly looked bulky from what Finn could see.
Finn approached and gazed at the three menus that the place had: one for pizza, obviously, and the other two for soups and salads. However, Finn was mostly there for the pizza and was quite surprised by their otherwise normal offerings. Perhaps the ingredients would be the unusual part.
He ordered a typical pepperoni pizza while Jake chose the more meat-filled version.
"Okay, thanks for your patronage. Your pizza will be out in three minutes," the burly guy, whom Finn learned was called Chief Sassy, said as he gave them their waiting time.
The two readily agreed and moved to sit down at one of the countless free tables. But something caught Finn's attention. More precisely, it was the other three workers who seemed to be performing what Finn would have believed was a ritual. They were preparing the dough for the pizza in a very weird way.
Two of them were tossing a rolled-up piece of dough to each other, flipping it masterfully in the air before throwing it back. The final worker truly caught Finn's eye. He was juggling the finished product that the other two had been shaping, performing all sorts of tricks with it. Finn would have almost believed this guy thought he was using a yo-yo if he hadn't seen where the dough had come from.
"Hey Finn, what do you think of the Candy Kingdom so far?" Jake asked, immediately pulling Finn's attention away from the mesmerizing sight.
"It's been surprisingly good so far. I got to see a new place and meet new people," Finn replied happily, though he couldn't quite explain how he truly felt while taking in all the strange sights. A whole kingdom made of candy—now that was something he needed to check off his checklist.
Jake nodded thoughtfully at Finn's reply. "Don't worry, Finn, I'll make sure you get to see the coolest places and meet the nicest people," he said, puffing out his chest in pride.
"Sure thing, bro. Hey Jake, I wanted to ask, do you have a phone or something?" Finn asked curiously, unsure if Jake would have such a thing. He recalled that phones were quite common based on his knowledge of the show.
"Yeah, I walk around everywhere with mine. Do you need something?" Jake said as he pulled out a green brick phone attached to headphones.
Finn's eyes sparkled with curiosity, especially about how Jake managed to carry such a phone while walking around all day. Did he just keep it hanging on his body, or was there something even more special about Jake's ability that Finn didn't know? He figured Jake would probably just shrug and say, "I have no idea."
"Cool! We'll need to start posting those videos of our adventures. Do you think that phone of yours can handle that?" Finn asked curiously, aware that the internet existed in this world, albeit in a very rudimentary form. Having his own computer would save him a lot of time, and maybe he should speed up his search for parts.
He had flagged several areas to search for components and was even planning to visit one such area after this pizza trip.
"Yeah, Finn, this old gal can handle that. Just leave it to me!" Jake said. Just then, the burly guy brought their pizzas to the table.
"Enjoy, guys!" he said, a warmth to his voice as he returned to the counter. The pizza guy then relaxed in his seat as he started tuning the radio to different channels.
[Radio static]
"Eat your food, Finn," Jake said, already enjoying his slice. Every bite brought tears to his eyes.
Finn simply smiled as he followed suit.
The pizza was sizzling hot—it was perfection and delicious. From the way the cheese dripped as he picked up a slice, to the perfect explosion of flavor as the cheese melted in his mouth, to the wonderfully made bread and the pepperoni on top, Finn could have kissed the chef.
Finn threw a quick thumbs-up to the bulky pizza guy, who responded with a wide smile. Finn finally realized why Jake looked so entranced.
"It's so good," he mouthed to Jake.
"I know, bro. I know," Jake replied, and Finn understood that they had reached a mutual understanding.
["Good morning to all my wonderful listeners, and welcome back to another episode of the Graveyard Shift."]
The radio finally landed on a channel, and Finn could hear the familiar voice of someone he believed was Starchy. He felt lucky to catch an episode of his radio show. Finn was curious about what Starchy would talk about, hoping it wouldn't cause him any trouble later.
["I'm your host, Starchy. And to all my lucky listeners today who are unaware, today is our first anniversary!" [clapping sound effects]]
Finn would have clapped if he weren't busy eating his pizza. He noticed that Jake was frowning when the radio show began.
["So many things have happened during this time. I still work at the Candy Kingdom graveyard. I started drinking rainwater, I'm still looking for a girlfriend... and most importantly, all new conspiracies!!!"]
Finn's interest was piqued. He recalled Starchy's radio show and the potential problems it could bring, but his curiosity was stronger. The phenomenon of the "Blind Eye" was particularly fascinating to him.
Finn was already aware of the power of collective consciousness in this world, and it wasn't surprising that it had manifested through a radio show.
["To start of our list of conspiracies, I firmly believe that all the cake frosting in the kingdom has been secretly replaced by concrete. And when was the last time you saw Peppermint Butler smile hmm, or is he just a robot the princess created to replace the original? And when was the last time you sharpened your pencils? Never!! Because they are pens painted to look like pencils. Conspiracies!!"]
"Baloney! Who listens to this stuff? It's a whole lot of nonsense."
"I'm listening," Finn replied, while Jake grumbled some more.
"We're getting out of here, Finn," Jake said as he moved to pay for the pizza they had ordered, but Finn continued to follow the radio show, curious about what other absurdities would be discussed.
["Okay everyone, we have a caller. You are on the air, caller," Starchy announced.]
["Hi Starchy, I'm a Chocolate Bar, a gym trainer," said the caller.]
["Gym trainer? That's a good job. So, Chocolate Bar Guy, what do you have to tell us today?" Starchy asked.]
[Chocolate bar guy :"So, Starchy, yesterday I was talking to a friend of mine, and he told me this story he overheard from some talking tomatoes."]
["Aha talking tomatoes you say, what were they talking about?" Starchy prompted.]
[Chocolate bar guy: "Well, my friend said they were arguing about a civil war between some tomatoes to decide whether they are fruits or vegetables."]
[Starchy: "A civil war to decide that? They must be loopy, Chocolate Guy. The answer is obviously fruits. Only an idiot would say otherwise."]
[Chocolate bar guy:"That's exactly what I said! But you won't believe what happened, Starchy. The veggie side won!"]
[Starchy: "Well, tie me an apple and call me crazy! Those guys must be the biggest loonies of all time…"]
This part made Finn chuckle just as Jake pulled him away after finishing the payment. Finn waved to the buff pizza guy as they left.
"Come again another day."
