Chapter 33: Wait, What?
Jenna hummed lazily as she woke up, enjoying the cool sheets beneath her.
She burrowed deeper under her blanket as the light of the morning sun filtered in through her window.
After a few minutes of laying on the bed with her eyes closed, she finally yawned, stretching on the bed.
She sat up, rubbing at her eyes as she opened them. She took a moment to look around her room with a smile.
She didn't come here often but it was her favorite place. Her home away from home.
A place that belonged to her and her alone where she could let her hair down and enjoy herself without society or her mother breathing down her neck.
That was one of the reasons why she couldn't ignore Nico coming and bringing a stranger with him. He'd soiled the... purity of her personal space.
Ever since she'd gotten the island as a gift from her step dad, Logan Voss, she'd always cherished the place. One other reason was because her mother and her sister were nowhere near.
Her mother loved her business in New York too much to leave it and her sister was the same, following in the footsteps of their mother.
There was also the fact that the island gifted to her sister was on the other side of Antarctica. She had no reason to come all the way down to Crownsborough.
Jenna looked out her window at the view of the docks and the sea beyond. She smiled, admiring it before sliding out of bed.
She went through her morning routine which started with a quick shower.
The shower was followed by a skincare routine that was equal to anything one could get at a high end spa. That was what it meant to be wealthy. Having the world at her convenience.
After that, she wore her outfit for the day, a crop top and trousers. There was no one here to tell her what she can and can't wear.
She checked herself out in the mirror, posing with a big smile. She looked ready for business.
She made her way downstairs to the kitchen where a steaming cup of coffee was already waiting for her.
Her staff had no idea when she'd show up but they kept a hot cup waiting. If it got even a bit lukewarm, they had it replaced in an instant.
She took a seat at the counter and grabbed the cup, taking a sip of it. She savoured the cup, humming to herself the latest hit song by her favorite musician.
Her phone dinged, the screen lighting up with a message. She picked it up to see it was from Quinn.
She clicked open the message.
Hey gurrl! We still on for Cafe Del La Paix today?
Jenny smiled at the message before typing up a reply.
Noon, right?
A few seconds later, her phone dinged.
Of course. You know how much Charlotte adores her afternoon coffee.
Jenny chuckled, remembering Charlotte without her noon coffee. She was always cranky and was never a joy to be around.
The three of them always joked that if one cut Charlotte open, they'd find coffee instead of blood.
Jenny replied to the message.
Perfect. I'll see you there.
She continued her humming. A bright morning and an upcoming meeting with Quinn and Charlotte? The day was looking up.
"Ma'am." Her head of security saluted smartly in front of her.
"Oh, you." She said. "This better be good news."
"It's the report, ma'am." The man said before handing her a thin file.
She collected the file and began flipping through it. "Give me the highlights." She told the man without looking up.
"Yes, ma'am." He replied. "As instructed, we've compiled the latest information on Mr. Nico Voss."
Her eyes ghosted over the opening report, barely suppressing her scoff as she saw that Nico was still living at the mansion funded by their father's money.
Of course, he still hadn't cut off his financial umbilical cord.
At this point, the only people who still depended on their father for money were him and their youngest sister.
"We.also found out that Mr. Voss now drives a new McLaren Senna which he used in a race against Miss Devon. The clips can be found online." The man said.
Jenna smirked at his words. Wait till their father heard that the son he wanted to hide from the world was racing influencers.
The story will definitely get to him one day. But she won't be the one to tell him. She was a lot of things but never a snitch.
At least, she could tell that Nico was finally breaking out of his reclusive shell. The question was why.
She turned the page of the report in her hand and blinked at what she saw. Her head of security's next words confirmed it.
"Recently, Mr. Voss acquired a real estate investment firm called Cooper Real Estate. The firm is said to be valued at approximately seventy million dollars."
Jenny's hand paused in the middle of turning the page, her head snapping up. "You said what?" She blinked. "Seventy million dollars?"
"Yes, Miss Voss. The acquisition was handled quietly but our contacts confirmed the transfer of ownership. He holds the majority share."
Jenny's eyes widened at his words, genuine shock flickering across her face.
"Where did he get that kind of money?" She murmured to herself.
As far as anyone knew, Nico's only assets come from whatever scraps their father tosses him. And their father never tosses anything out. Well, except Nico.
The head of security hesitated before answering. "We... don't actually know, ma'am. We're still investigating him."
Jenny nodded absentmindedly. She was still puzzling out the information she just heard.
For Nico to acquire a form like Cooper Real Estate, either he had borrowed against some new collateral or he was into something... unsavoury.
Wherever he had gotten the money, she knew what he was doing. He was quietly playing the game and breaking out of the cage he had been placed in.
Unfortunately for him, he had made a mistake that had brought her attention to him.
She allowed a hint of a smile to cross her face as she composed herself.
"Anything else?" She asked.
"Yes, ma'am." The man answered. "Mr. Voss has also recently gained membership at the Pine Press Country Club."
After hearing the previous information, this one didn't surprise her as much.
But she still couldn't help but wonder if the club has somehow lowered it's standards.
Pine Press was known for one thing. Exclusivity. That had been the reason why she'd enjoyed her membership at the club.
But now that she knew she'd be sharing that exclusivity with Nico, she couldn't help but wonder what the board were thinking.
She shut the file, placing it on the countertop.
It seems like her timid step brother was no more. Instead, there was now a man making real moves in the background.
She straightened, looking up at her head of security. "Find out everything you can about his acquisition of Cooper Real Estate. I want to know where he got the funds and who he's been meeting with."
"Yes, ma'am."
Jenny turned back to her coffee as the man left the room, one eyes on the folder beside her.
Someone has to show Nico that those with wings made of wax shouldn't be so quick to fly into the sun.
She now knew her next destination after her time at the Cafe De La Paix.
