Chapter 225: Bandits
These things didn't mean much to Zhang Ye.
But the reason he gave them away wasn't out of pity for the man; he simply felt that the man before him was worth winning over.
Liang Wenjie, who was kowtowing, hadn't even considered that the other party had no intention of setting terms.
Instead, they were told to just take the stuff and go back.
"All right, get up,"
"Isn't your wife waiting for her medicine?"
Zhang Ye's expression remained calm, but the plain tone of his voice carried a hint of concern when it reached the ears of the others.
But he thought it seemed inappropriate to let Liang Wenjie go back just like that.
After all, there were so many edibles and medications.
It could easily attract prying eyes.
"Peng Liu, find someone to escort him back," Zhang Ye said.
He glanced back at the man on the ground, his eyes now twinkling with a hint of amusement, "It would be pretty awkward if, after doing a good deed, he got robbed just outside the door, wouldn't it?"
Liang Wenjie didn't know what to say anymore and just kept kowtowing, continuously thanking him.
By the time he got up, his face was covered in tears.
And his eyes were extremely red and swollen.
Peng Liu, standing aside, also felt a lump in his throat and patted him on the shoulder, "Come on, big guy, don't cry. Let's go, I'll take you back."
"You've got lucky meeting our boss," he added.
He then shouted for someone from outside to come in.
"Bring your weapons, we're going out."
The man who came in was lean but looked fierce. Hearing Peng Liu's instructions, he immediately responded with a smile, "Got my gun right here, should we head out now?"
Peng Liu's gaze shifted back to Zhang Ye, who was still sitting in the room. Seeing him nod, Peng Liu then left with the two men.
Upon exiting, there were stairs on the left leading downstairs.
The first floor had also been rented to provide a resting place for the dozen or so brothers who came along. They'd even procured a few blankets from the neighbors to spread on the floor, so it wouldn't be too hard to sleep.
The outside had become completely dark, with very few people on the streets.
Those who did pass by moved quickly,
Their actions betrayed a wariness.
The company had come under the guise of the Ecological Park.
To avoid arousing the wariness of Li Wanhao and other significant powers, the company's takeover of the Ecological Park and assimilation of the Excellence Fleet were not widely publicized. Outwardly, it appeared that Peng Yue had defeated Chen Xiaoyong and had taken over the Ecological Park.
So, in the eyes of the survivors in Jiangbei, the Peng family brothers had become strong players literally overnight.
And the Ecological Park they occupied naturally evolved into one of the several major forces in Jiangbei.
Very few dared to toy with the idea of targeting them.
But tonight was an exception.
Wanhao District was originally expanded upon the foundation of Market Street.
This area had been developed early on, and it was notorious for its chaos, with various illegal buildings and self-constructed houses everywhere.
The already chaotic layout was further complicated by shelters built by the survivors from all sorts of discarded materials.
Market Street had turned into a maze of rat tunnels crisscrossing in every direction.
Everywhere there were low and narrow alleys.
Dark and deep.
Robbers, thieves, prostitutes - those living in society's shadowy corners hid in the nooks of these alleys, quietly waiting for their prey to come along.
Although Peng Liu tended to be rather hot-tempered, he was very cautious in handling affairs.
Especially after the death of Peng Er and the capture of Peng San.
He always strived for caution in everything.
As they walked through the dark alleys, even holding flashlights, they couldn't help but feel tense.
Liang Wenjie clutched at the bag in his arms even tighter, afraid to let go for even a moment.
It seemed that if he loosened his grip, the contents would fly away on their own.
This was his family's lifeline.
Because it had rained a few days ago, every step made a splashing noise.
The smooth, sticky mud squeaked under the friction of their shoes.
Peng Liu suddenly stopped.
Following closely behind, Liang Wenjie immediately stepped back several paces, ready to run all the way back along the path they had come if anything went wrong.
But the gaunt man who had been padding up from behind took a few steps forward and whispered behind Peng Liu:
"What's wrong, Brother Liu?"
Peng Liu's hand had already reached for the gun handle, yet his other hand was stretched out in midair, clearly signaling the other two not to move forward.
He looked ahead into the darkness with an expression that was both solemn and tinged with a cold smirk.
"There's someone."
"And not just a few."
No sooner had his voice fallen than there came several squelching sounds of shoes trudging through the mud ahead.
Then a man wearing a motorcycle helmet stepped out.
His shrill laughter sounded very self-satisfied.
"Hehehe."
"These brothers have good eyesight, huh?"
"To spot us from so far away, pretty fucking impressive."
As he spoke, four or five more people came out from behind him, each wearing a helmet or obscuring their faces, their sinister gazes sizing up the trio incessantly.
After delivering that line, the man in the lead helmet then said to Liang Wenjie with a laugh:
"What's that brother holding there?"
"Let me see?"
His tone sounded inquisitive.
But in reality, it left no room for Liang Wenjie to refuse, as a short man emerged from the darkness and swaggered, intending to pass by Peng Liu.
He was clearly aiming to take the bag straight from Liang Wenjie's hands.
Liang Wenjie immediately panicked, stepping back quickly, his voice quivering, "You, aren't you afraid I'll report this? This area is under the jurisdiction of the Security Bureau!"
The Security Bureau he mentioned was not the former Security Bureau of Sanjiang City.
It was the private security bureau set up by Li Wanhao.
In charge of Wanhao District's public order.
The bureau chief, surnamed Li, was in his thirties, and he also claimed to be the police superintendent, but his subordinates couldn't be called that.
They usually let others call them police chief.
They say that's what they call it overseas.
A borrowed term.
However, these robbers burst into laughter when they heard Liang Wenjie's words, exchanging glances and laughing uproariously.
One of them even laughed so hard he couldn't stand, leaning against the wall gasping for air.
"Security Bureau?"
"There's really some dumbass who believes that?"
When their laughter finally died down, someone in the crowd pointed at the helmeted man in the lead, looking smug:
"Dumbass, do you know who our Boss Tao is?"
"He is—"
Just as he was halfway through his sentence, a scream suddenly erupted in the alley.
The short man who had walked out from the crowd was now clutching his neck as he fell to the ground, blood oozing nonstop from between his fingers—it was clear he wouldn't last much longer.
"Fuck!"
"Are you fucking insane?"
"Kill the three of them, don't let a single one escape!"
Curses filled the air as the robbers lost all their scant patience in an instant and charged toward Peng Liu in a swarm.
But they hadn't taken more than a few steps when a loud bang rang out beside their ears!

The helmeted man at the forefront suddenly collapsed to the ground.
Then came heart-wrenching screams.
"Aaaah!"
"My, my leg is broken!"
