Chapter 235: The Legacy Obtained
The forest clearing was in complete disarray. The members of the Great Zhao Dynasty, including the Zhao brothers, had all perished, their bodies turned to ash. Lin Langtian's Vermilion Bird Sky-Flame had both burned them beyond recognition and erased any trace of them. Lin Langtian preferred to leave no loose ends.
Standing over his handiwork, Lin Langtian felt little surprise at the outcome. While the Zhao brothers were also in the Four Yuan Nirvana stage, they were newly advanced and far less capable than the likes of Luo Yantian, who had previously posed a greater challenge. Given Lin Langtian's own overwhelming strength, paired with the terror of his Vermilion Bird Sky-Flame, he found it easy to defeat the two brothers.
As Lin Langtian finished, Jinwu stepped up beside him with a smile. "Brother, you're too quick! I didn't even get a chance to step in before you handled them all."
"There will be more opportunities for you to jump in later," Lin Langtian replied with a light smile.
Watching the calm shift in Lin Langtian's demeanor, from ruthless and indifferent to composed and friendly, Xing Lie found himself taken aback. It was hard to reconcile this calm young man in green with the deadly, almost inhuman warrior he had witnessed a moment ago.
As he glanced between Lin Langtian and his remaining comrades, Xing Lie felt a mix of emotions. Relief that the threat from the Great Zhao Dynasty was over, yet dread that Lin Langtian, who now had his sights set on their legacy, might dispose of them next.
One of Xing Lie's subordinates turned to him, murmuring, "What now, Brother Xing?"
None of them could shake the feeling that they'd simply traded one danger for another. Lin Langtian's incredible strength, combined with his ability to extinguish life so readily, weighed on them like a looming mountain.
"Nothing we can do. We're at his mercy," Xing Lie replied with a bitter smile. He hoped that Lin Langtian's interest in them would fade once he obtained what he sought, leaving them with their lives. Resistance was out of the question. They had seen what Lin Langtian could do and knew that even if they were at their peak strength, they'd be no match for him.
Xing Lie approached Lin Langtian with careful steps, bowing respectfully. "I am Xing Lie of the Blackwood Dynasty, greeting you, sir." Behind him, the rest of the Blackwood warriors followed suit, bowing deeply. Lin Langtian had clearly earned their respect—and fear.
Lin Langtian studied Xing Lie, noticing the man's energy had fallen back to the Third Yuan Nirvana level. His expression softened slightly as he acknowledged their concern. "I only want what you carry," he said. "Your lives don't interest me."
Relief flickered through Xing Lie and his men. Lin Langtian's assurance was a huge relief, given the brutal power he had just displayed.
But Xing Lie knew well enough what this meant—if he failed to hand over what Lin Langtian wanted, the outcome would be far from merciful. With a sigh of resignation, Xing Lie reached into his belongings. This legacy of the Wood Emperor Sect, part of the Five Elements Sect, had come at a high cost, and he had barely escaped the northeastern region with it. Yet even after fending off the Great Zhao Dynasty, it seemed he would lose the treasure after all.
In moments, Xing Lie produced a strange object, a green liquid form resembling layers of ancient bark, intricate and mysterious. "Sir, this is the legacy of the Wood Emperor Sect."
Lin Langtian's brows rose in curiosity as he accepted the ancient bark. Though he didn't absorb it right away, he carefully examined it, using his own mental strength and even asking Aunt Ling to confirm its authenticity. In a world as treacherous as this, vigilance was key.
Satisfied that the bark was safe, Lin Langtian nodded approvingly. Xing Lie's cooperation was likely the result of witnessing Lin Langtian's brutal tactics earlier, and Lin Langtian himself was glad to see his show of strength had done its job. In truth, his use of the Vermilion Bird Sky-Flame had not only tested its power but served to dissuade Xing Lie from any tricks.
Seeing Lin Langtian's cautious inspection, Xing Lie wiped cold sweat from his brow, relieved he had made the right choice. He had indeed considered rigging the bark but had ultimately resisted. Lin Langtian's tactics had been terrifying enough to squash any such thoughts.
Finally reassured, Lin Langtian focused on the bark in his hand. A burst of green light shattered from the ancient surface as it unraveled, leaving a piece of green bark floating above his palm. Intrigued, Lin Langtian watched as a flurry of ancient symbols shimmered across the bark, each glowing with mystery and ancient power.
Suddenly, a surge of green light shot from the bark, penetrating Lin Langtian's palm and rushing into his mind, filling it with a flood of potent information. His eyes briefly flashed with green light as the information embedded itself deeply in his mind, and as it faded, his face reflected a mix of surprise and satisfaction.
"The Wood Emperor's Threefold Art," he murmured, a smile spreading across his face.
