Chapter 337: Knockoff Goods, Both Fierce and Cheap!_2
The soldiers of the Spanish Foreign Legion who were stubbornly resisting inside the mountain cave noticed there were no sounds outside, and one bearded man quickly signaled to pause, then bent over to crawl out and took a glance.
"Why have the Mexicans withdrawn?!"
He was bewildered. If they kept pressing, those inside were about to surrender, weren't they? Were they really just giving up halfway through?
Suddenly, he heard the roar of an engine from the sky, squinted and saw a warplane charging over and launching missiles in midair!
AGM-65!!
The Spaniard's pupils shrank, and he could only watch helplessly as the fiery "little bull" rushed into the cave and struck the armored car dead on.
Boom!
A massive shockwave and flames rushed out, even the air seemed to tremble.
Half of the cave collapsed, leaving nothing but thick black smoke.
"Charge! Charge!!"
The Lieutenant Colonel below immediately leaped to his feet, grabbed a rifle from a guard, racked the bolt, and led the charge.
This path, once a "Road of Death" of mere dozens of meters, fell silent, also signifying the complete eradication of the living forces on Roca Partida Island!
One island to the left and one to the right were conquered, pointed like arrows at the largest island in the Revillagigedo Archipelago, Socorro Island!
On this island, it was said that the force exceeded 3,000!
War entered the second phase!
...
Deep in the Sonora Desert.
A convoy of more than a dozen Humvees was speeding along, the personnel fully armed, clearly not ones to be trifled with, sporting mounted heavy machine guns.
A lizard, hearing the commotion, crawled out of its hole, but before it understood what was happening, its head was crushed under a tire, leaving behind a pool of blood and twitching legs as the vehicles passed.
The Humvee convoy rounded a large slope and beheld a factory in the midst of the sandy expanse. As the vehicles approached, they spotted an armed helicopter and a Humvee driving towards them.
A man from the leading vehicle in the convoy stepped out, carrying documents to hand to the incoming party.
Upon examination, they quickly disembarked and stood by the vehicle.
As the convoy passed, they saluted, "Loyalty!"
As they drew near the factory, they could see the gun ports and the mounted fire god cannon, and not far away sat a radar vehicle alongside two U.S. AC-2 anti-aircraft missiles!
Armed security raised their guns, keeping watch as the convoy entered.
Inside the plant, soldiers could be seen standing at every corner, the security as tight as that of the Tijuana Governor's Mansion.
This was the "Sonora Armory!"
Spanning an area of over 20,000 square meters, it was originally a drug trafficker's private prison that came under the control of the Northern Army and was expanded into the current armory.
Victor, of course, wasn't just working for points; he felt it was necessary to produce on his own and opened many factories in the Northern region, exchanging points for World War II production lines, T34, Tiger heavy tanks, Shermans...
If you took them to European and Asian battlefields, they might be outdated.
But in Africa...
Those were still formidable weapons!
If you wanted to earn foreign exchange, then the only option was to "deal in arms," and these armories combined even formed a "Northern Group!"
Besides this, Victor also opened some civilian factories, presently fine-tuning something called a pager, intending to sell it in Asia and Africa.
These civil factories were the "Northern Civilian Group!"
As for the Sonora Armory, it was somewhat special; Victor exchanged points for a dozen military industrial experts, entrusted them with Soviet and American weapons to reverse engineer, primarily those mainstream weapons from the Cold War period.
You Yanks want to mess with me?
I'll make counterfeit goods!
If you go crashing your market share, you sell them at 20,000, I sell for 6,000, branding it as both cheap and of good quality.
Why are the Yanks' goods so expensive?
Eighty to ninety percent of the markup is in those four words: independent research and development; many secrets they don't disclose.
Pah!
Simply an arms hegemony, a monopoly on arms.
Victor will kill you!
These experts weren't cheap, costing around 6 million each—but their abilities were pretty much on par with senior Soviet military industrial personnel. Intelligentsia is always expensive.
Victor used points to exchange for the real deal, letting the military industrial experts "disassemble" them for fun. Copycatting wasn't easy.
And the workforce for production was composed of some soldiers and mostly military dependents.
The wages were high, roughly four to five times that of an average worker outside.
As Victor stepped down from the vehicle, he felt an intense heat, put on his sunglasses, and saw a dark-skinned Lieutenant Colonel running over with his people, excitedly standing at attention.
"General!"
"Sorry for the intrusion," said Victor with a smile.
"Welcome, General, for your inspection!"
The people behind clapped their hands.
"If your applause isn't loud enough, you'll be taken aside for a little 'education' by the Thirteen Protectors. Haven't you noticed George Smiley standing nearby with that fierce look in his eyes?"
This leader of the Thirteen Protectors... his methods were dark indeed!
"Let's go to the workshop."
The Lieutenant Colonel promptly led the way, not forgetting to introduce, "Our Sonora Armory currently employs 2,239 people, including 212 technicians and 1,913 line workers..."
"We can produce 700,000 rounds of standard ammunition a month, and our two production lines can produce a total of 200 M249 machine guns and 2,000 155mm artillery shells every month!"
Of course, not all of these were produced at the Sonora Armory.
For example, the cartridge cases, shell casings, and some other parts were outsourced to 'cooperative' Mexican companies, but if one looked closely, these companies all had the backing of the Northern Mexican Alliance.
Which meant they were semi-official.
It was essentially a money transfer operation, and then they would recruit workers to increase employment rates.
"I've heard you've reverse-engineered the BGM-109 cruise missile?"
Upon hearing this, the Lieutenant Colonel puffed out his chest with pride, "Yes, indeed!"
That was no easy feat. Although Victor had promised to secure talents in military technology for reverse engineering, the workload was far from simple. Experience more content on My Virtual Library Empire
This type of reverse engineering meant acquiring foreign advanced weapons and equipment, using high-precision surveying instruments for comprehensive and detailed mapping and modeling, and then reproducing these weapons based on the measurement results. In layman's terms, it was a high-tech "knockoff."
It was like copying the U.S. Military to cross the river.
Vultures had turned into Stensons.
Being able to reverse engineer it was no small feat, from any perspective.
"Have you tested it?"
At this question, the Lieutenant Colonel's expression turned a bit awkward, "It has been sent to the air force units for testing. Our own developed maximum cruise speed is only Mach 0.65, and the maximum range is 990 kilometers. The accuracy is also quite off, about 100 meters. But we have also equipped it with inertial guidance + GPS map-matching guidance + image guidance. The explosive power is the same as the United States' 454-kilogram high-explosive warhead."
"Moreover, if needed, we can continue to adjust it. We can make the high-explosive warhead 500 kilograms, no big deal just to reduce speed and range, but firing from Mexico into U.S. territory would be enough."
"But our cost is only half of the BGM-109, about 500,000 US dollars."
"That's not cheap," Victor commented, shivering at the cost, his brows twisted in concern.
"General, we can sell to the Middle East, they're not short on money," the Lieutenant Colonel hastily said, then paused, "The countries in Asia are also viable."
"You've even thought of potential buyers, it seems you're well-prepared."
The Lieutenant Colonel chuckled sheepishly.
"However, I do have a few small suggestions."
Hearing the General say this, the Lieutenant Colonel and those behind him quickly pulled out notebooks and pens to take notes.
"I think we need to eliminate some unnecessary things. For instance, inertial guidance + GPS map-matching guidance + image guidance are pointless. They're too high-tech; many countries can't imagine using them."
"Weapons need just a few elements: they must explode loudly, fly far, and be cheap!"
"If precise guidance isn't viable, then use area saturation! As long as it's cheap, buyers will not be scarce."
All that fancy stuff!
It's about the explosions!
Explosions so powerful, your mother wouldn't recognize you.
You're accurate to 30 meters, but I'll hit everything within 300 meters—who's the boss?
"What kind of propulsion does the Tomahawk use?"
"ARC solid-fuel boosters."
Victor was quiet; he asked casually, but who knew the Lieutenant Colonel would respond with a term he didn't understand at all. He coughed, "Then work on increasing the range. A missile affordable to our friends in Africa is a good missile!"
Everyone applauded.
"Once you've got production going, you can name it," Victor said patting the Lieutenant Colonel's shoulder for encouragement.
"Thank you, General!" said the other party excitedly.
Excited, he had to be excited.
Dare not be excited?
After a brief tour of the workshop, Victor left. He understood that a leader lingering too long was sure to become a nuisance.
"General, do you want to see the military experts?"
"Let's go take a look." Just as Victor was about to follow the Lieutenant Colonel upstairs, the secretary rushed over and spoke in a low voice.
The Lieutenant Colonel wisely stood at a distance.
"Taken down? Good job! Send a congratulatory message to the front line and encourage them to redouble their efforts. As for Socorro Island, bomb it first. Bomb it until not a single bird dares to land, then we can charge."
"Use the Mk-84 2000-pound bombs!"
"Bomb them to hell!"
Victor turned to the Lieutenant Colonel, "Can we replicate it?"
