Chapter 9: Chapter 9 -[The Golden Egg]
A few days later Andromeda brought a note for Harry to come to Hogwarts for a wand check.
The boy would be accompanied by Minerva and Andromeda. Of course, Hermione and the two familiars would not be far behind.
The group appeared outside Hogwarts at the appointed time. Hagrid was waiting for them and smiled when he saw them. But when his eyes fell on the two Grims...
" They are beautiful." said the half-giant.
" Hagrid! " said Minerva. " I think they're waiting for us."
" Oh yes! Of course! " he said, pointing at the castle. As they walked forward, Hagrid approached the boy. " I'm glad you're here. It was tragic what happened. Dumbledore tried to do what he could but..."
" That's a lie, " said Harry. The half-giant started to protest. " That's what he told you, and I'm not going to argue, " he looked at him. " But, didn't he tell you that that same morning the unspeakables were ready to bind our magic or that he was already sharing my inheritance?"
" I don't think so..."
" Someone with magic bound can't have anything magical, that includes money and property," added Hermione.
" You were the first person who was ever kind to me." Harry continued." In memory of that, I won't hold anything you said against you. I know you only think you're defending what you think is right. But you're wrong."
" But the Headmaster…"
" He did nothing to stop Remus from being killed or to stop Sirius from being kissed." said the boy." Among his duties as Head of the Wizengamot is to ensure that all wizards and witches receive justice. Tell me what they got?" The boy said no more and moved forward from the stunned Half-giant.
Minerva approached.
" Hagrid." she said." The old man has done many things for the greater good. But does anyone know what that is? What did he do for you when you were arrested three years ago?" the big man shuddered." Or when you were expelled from Hogwarts?" the being looked at her without understanding." He could have asked for your wand back and he hasn't." the gamekeeper opened his eyes in surprise." I think Albus has an idea in his mind of what is best for everyone. But that doesn't mean that others have to agree or that it is the best. He just wants them to follow him without arguing."
The group arrived at the castle where Septima Vector would accompany the group to the ceremony.
Behind her was a very confused groundskeeper.
{SCENE BREAK}
As soon as the group entered, they saw everyone present. Besides the three champions and their Headmasters, there was Snape and Ollivander. The two Ministry officials were also there. A flash of light warned them that someone from the prophet would report everything. Harry and Hermione hugged their familiars when they looked at the photographer, growling.
" I wouldn't do that again if I were you," Harry said to the frightened Wizard who nodded in agreement.
" Dear Harry!" A blonde woman with glasses approached him with a false smile." My name is Rita Skeeter. I would like to have a word with you." she said, grabbing the boy and trying to drag him away.
The word was trying. The boy didn't move and he jerked free.
" Why? " he asked seriously.
" We want to include a short interview with each champion in the article, " the woman replied.
" Has anyone done the interview yet? " the boy asked. The other three champions shook their heads. " Why do I have to be any different?"
" I just wanted to start with the youngest of the champions." said the woman.
" I think manners prevail." the boy replied, looking at a young woman dressed in blue." Ladies first." he finished, bowing his head slightly. The young woman tensed before smiling gratefully.
" What are those animals doing here? " Snape growled. He was not the only one, Shadow and Night looked at him growling. The potionist took a step back and tried to pull out his wand.
" If he dares to cast a spell on our familiars." Harry began." I swear I will not rest until I destroy him. Make his magic be tied, make everything he owns mine, and make him beg in the streets." The wizard looked at the boy upon hearing this.
" That's if I don't kill him first," Hermione growled. Few of those who knew the girl recognized her from those words and especially from the look she had, no doubt about her statement. The new deputy headmaster tried to appear indifferent.
" As arrogant as…"
" Don't go there, Severus! " Minerva silenced him.
" Let them come out! " he replied. " And the girl too! " he added, looking at Hermione.
" What are you doing here? " asked Hermione.
" I'm the deputy Headmaster."
" And I'm the headmistress's secretary, " she finished. " I'm here in case Mrs. McGonagall needs any information about the tournament, " the potioner looked at her with contempt.
" I didn't remember your... obsession with books," he replied with a certain repulsion in his voice.
" Watch out, Death Eater! " Andromeda warned him. Many looked worriedly at Snape when they heard how they called him. Even more so when the one referred to did not try to deny it.
" We'd better get started." said Ludo Bagman, seeing how tense the situation was." I think we all have other matters to attend to."
" The headmaster is missing," said Snape.
" You are here." Andromeda said." I believe that if he proposes a time and this is not it, it is your obligation to represent him." At that moment the old man entered.
" Sorry for the wait, " said Dumbledore. " I had to take care of a problem. " He looked at the boy. He noticed that everyone was looking at him seriously.
" Let's begin! " said the ministerial wizard.
Ludo Bagman explained what they would do at this event.
Ollivander examined each champion's wand. When he finished, Rita began asking for photos.
The photographer had a difficult time when Harry posed next to Shadow. He didn't dare take the photo. That amused some people.
" Calm down, take the photo." said the boy, caressing his family member.
When the journalist tried to get an interview with the boy again, Andromeda intervened.
" Lord Potter-Black, will not be giving exclusive interviews." said Andromeda." If you want to ask a couple of questions, it will be in front of everyone."
" That seems reasonable to me." Albus intervened.
With some annoyance, the woman asked each champion a few questions. Harry simply refused to answer those of a personal nature or those not related to the tournament. He even deflected a couple of questions to the other champions, asking their opinions without giving his own. Seeing that she would get nothing out of it, the annoyed reporter decided to end the interview.
When the group was leaving, the Headmaster stood in front of them.
" I would like to have a word with everyone in my office, " said the old man.
" Remember the conditions we set," Andromeda replied.
" It's something about the tournament and how Mr. Potter was entered, " the old man replied.
" Then send me an owl with the information, " the woman added. " My lord will not remain in this place longer than necessary." They did not wait for the old man's answer.
With that, the group left the room and quickly headed for the exit.
In the hallways, some young people looked at the group with the two Grims and moved away, between scared and amazed.
At a crossroads, the couple saw Susan and Hannah. They nodded slightly in greeting. For the moment, they would remain somewhat distant to ensure the safety of the Hogwarts students.
{SCENE BREAK}
The prophet attacked the young man again. They painted him as a surly, ill-tempered child with no respect for his elders. It described his family as ferocious beasts who could barely be controlled and a danger to the entire student body. When Hermione read that she was just a trophy wife for Harry, she tore up the paper in front of everyone.
More than one person smiled at the brunette's action. Embarrassed, she apologized before continuing with her breakfast.
This time, no one said anything. They had discussed the matter the first time they appeared in the prophet. Everyone agreed that Harry and the others knew how to act and that for the moment they should remain… invisible.
At Hogwarts, almost the entire student body was against Harry. It was ironic that all four houses united around their champion.
The opinions of the other two schools were different, they preferred to see before giving an opinion. Although they would remain alert.
On the ministry side, everything remained very tense. Secret plots and pacts were already a normal occurrence. At the center of everything was the newly created group.
On a couple of occasions, Andromeda had to deal with Dolores Umbridge's attempts to limit the boy's rights.
She had always sidestepped the woman's machinations by pointing to some other member of the Wizengamot who had a similar problem.
But she couldn't take it anymore when she tried to pass a law that prohibited werewolves from having children.
The toad woman did not expect to be attacked by more than fifteen people. Some even outside the so-called neutral group, which had been formed recently.
" But... we can't let those monsters reproduce...! " She didn't finish.
" If something like you, who looks like a cross between a Troll and a Glindylow, is alive! " many laughed at Andromeda's apt comparison. " I see no reason to prohibit other humans from having offspring!"
" They're not humans, they're werewolves! " added Lucius Malfoy.
" Are you telling me that everyone who has the blood of other creatures is not considered human?!" Andromeda asked amused.
" Not like that...!" the blond stepped back a little." But it should be studied if they are too different!"
" It's funny to hear that from someone with Veela blood in their ancestry! " Amelia Bones replied.
" How dare you…?!"
" Remember who I am!" she silenced him." I have access to the records of many families who moved to our country!" she looked at the room." There are many who call themselves purebloods and that is not the case!" no one dared to answer." When the Malfoy family moved from France, they were fleeing from something!" murmurs were heard. Lucius tried to appear calm but inside he wanted to kill the woman." Only they know what! But among your family documents there were some letters from a certain Marlene Deshabou to her daughter Giselle Malfoy!" she smiled." Ironically, the only Marlene Deshabou, of which there is evidence in France, was a witch with Veela blood married to a prominent French nobleman before the revolution! I admit that it was many generations ago, but... I would say that that blond hair so characteristic of the Malfoys seems to be a remnant of their heritage!"
" Don't you dare say such slander! " Malfoy replied. " My family has been pureblood for more than ten generations!"
" And no one doubts that! " answered the witch Bones. " I'm just pointing out that no matter how old the family is, something can always appear in its history!"
Everyone was thinking about what Amelia had said. Some knew that they were among them and were sure that they would vote against. The Undersecretary saw how everyone was turning against her and decided to slightly correct her idea.
" I was only referring to those who have an illness that prevents them from safely interacting with other witches and wizards! " she said in her sweet voice.
" More of the same!" Andromeda began annoyed." The head of my family will never set foot in this room and she knows it!" she looked at Dolores." But with this law, you are removing two of the oldest families in this body!" she looked at everyone." What about tomorrow?! Maybe one of those present will have the misfortune of passing by a place and have a bad encounter! Maybe it will happen to a son or grandson!" many listened in silence." I would like to add something! Will dragonpox also be a reason for someone to be prohibited from having offspring?!" they laughed a lot.
" What is that nonsense?!" protested the toad witch." Of course not!"
" Think about it carefully! " Andromeda added. " It can be fatal and it is also contagious!"
" It can be treated and with due care it is possible to avoid contagion! " added the toad woman, pretending to be informed.
" Ironic! " said Amelia Bones. " The same thing happens with lycanthropy! It is only dangerous a couple of days a month! And with the proper precautions... it is possible to avoid contagion! " Many saw how the two women had defeated Undersecretary Dolores Umbridge who sat down knowing what would happen with her proposed law, once again.
" Gentlemen!" Andromeda took the floor." I am tired of trying to make this body see reason! Every so often!" she said looking at the toad witch. " Someone makes a senseless proposal that affects the head of my family!" She looked at everyone." I am beginning to think that someone is trying to take away from Harry Potter what is his birthright!" many murmured or nodded in agreement." He will never be able to set foot in the seats of his ancestors! I think that is more than enough!" She looked at Malfoy." If this harassment does not stop here and now... I fear that at some point something will happen that we will all regret!"
" Is that a threat?!" Umbridge asked.
" No, it's a fact!" Andromeda answered." How many families have left our country?! How many have disappeared as victims of the previous conflict with the Death Eaters?! Many of them very old families!" she looked at Dumbledore." Hogwarts' student capacity is barely an eighth of what it was only five hundred years after its founding, and every year fewer children attend!" murmurs again." At this rate I'm sure that one day Hogwarts will have to close its doors for not having enough students to allow its existence!" the murmurs grew worried. Andromeda looked at Dolores." And they want to create laws that prevent wizards and witches, who only suffer from a curse that Saint Mungo's cannot treat, from having children or even living among us?!" she snorted." Do it! I'd like to see their faces when they realize that wizards in this country have become as rare as a dragon or... a Grim!"
Andromeda sat down, leaving everyone talking amongst themselves. At his table, Dumbledore tried to control the situation without success. The eldest Tonks had said more than he wanted everyone to know.
He had known this for many years. But he had a goal of marrying Muggleborns to heirs of pureblood families. He had no doubt that he could convince young people to take the name of the oldest and most powerful family. With this, he would save the wizarding world by introducing new blood. No doubt some would need some kind of encouragement but… it was all for the greater good.
As expected, the bill was rejected unanimously. The minister persuaded Dolores Umbridge to stop introducing such bills as they could cost her her job.
Lucius had to make some donations to make the records of his ancestors disappear.
He never found out that what he destroyed were only some copies. The originals were safely stored at Gringotts.
{SCENE BREAK}
With all this commotion, the day of the first test arrived.
Many were eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Sirius Black Academy.
Among the audience, the Minister of Magic and his Undersecretary were easily recognizable. There were also influential members of society such as Lucius Malfoy and his wife, and several other members of the Wizengamot.
Suddenly, the typical sound of attrition near the Forbidden Forest occurred. Several people appeared at the boundaries of the barriers.
It was not difficult to recognize Minerva McGonagall, Pomona Sprout, Filius Flitwick, or Andromeda Tonks.
The four of them began walking to meet up with the rest of the jury members and teachers.
Suddenly, at a signal from Dolores Umbridge, several Aurors appeared and pointed their wands at the group.
" What is this?!" Andromeda asked very angry.
" Security." answered Dolores Umbridge." We want the students to be safe. And you cannot deny that there is a possibility that one of you is infected with the lycanthropy gene." protests were heard among those present.
" Are you an idiot?!" said Minerva, causing the woman to turn bright red in fury." Even if that were the case, which it isn't, I think you're capable enough to see that it's daytime! There's no werewolf that transforms with the sun!" laughter could be heard behind the Aurors.
" It's not bad to make sure! " continued the witch in pink. " Maybe their deranged minds will make them attack us with their wands."
" And what will happen when Harry Potter tries to use it to perform the first test?!" Andromeda asked." Will they cast a killing curse at him!" several people shouted upon hearing her.
" No... of course... no!" she tried to regain control and repair her colossal blunder." This is just a... precaution!" she insisted again.
" I appeal to the judges of the tournament and to the Chalice itself!" said Minerva." One of the champions cannot compete freely since he is not allowed!" Albus understood what the woman intended." That is why, as the rules stipulate...!"
" The ministry has no say in the tournament! " said the old man loudly. " Once it has started, only the judges and the chalice can decide what happens!"
" How dare you…?!" the toad witch did not finish making her threat.
" That's right! " added Bartemius Crouch. " Once the contest has started, participants have a number of legal advantages and exceptions! No one can intervene or they will be punished by magic itself!"
" The Aurors will be able to keep watch over the security of the event!" Andromeda added." But if any of them get close to our students...!" she pointed at Fudge." They will suffer the consequences of interfering with the Goblet of Fire!"
" How dare you make such a threat?!" Umbridge shouted.
" Listen to your people, stupid!" Andromeda shouted." If an Auror threatens Harry Potter in any way or interferes with the development of a test, the Goblet of Fire itself will punish him! He will lose his magic or die!" At that moment almost all the Aurors put away their wands." Thank you."
" What I want to know is, who gave the order to transfer my men here?!" The woman's voice that was heard froze the blood of more than one. Amelia Bones had arrived with the parents of some of the students.
" I thought it would be safer…" the minister did not finish.
" I don't care!" she answered surprising everyone." The Aurors of the Ministry are not your personal army! You can't use them at will without giving a reason or requesting it!" she looked at the Minister with an angry face." It is a very serious irregularity since it leaves other places unprotected without the knowledge of those responsible."
" It's not that bad! " said Dolores. " The presence of the minister is more than enough to justify the presence of so many Aurors. " Amelia looked at her furiously.
" At least three of the Auros I've seen should be in St. Mungo's or Diagon Alley." said Amelia." Who will be responsible if something happens and no one can put things in order?" She stared at her." Because It won't be me!" Many looked at the minister annoyed.
" I don't think anything will happen, " said the toad woman calmly.
" But what if it happens? " Amelia added " Think about it. It will be your fault and I don't think your voters will like it " That was enough to make the minister pale.
In less than five minutes half the Aurors had returned to their posts.
Several remained close to the minister and his undersecretary.
Minerva and the other Headmasters took their places as judges, while Amelia and other parents sat in the places designated for them.
" Where's your champion? " asked Olimpique Maxine, the Beauxbatton headmistress. In response, Minerva raised her wand and threw sparks into the air.
Shortly after, a howl was heard from within the forbidden forest.
As in their presentation, the group of apprentices appeared next to the Grim, in their black and ash grey cloaks.
Many were seeing this for the first time and screamed in terror or surprise. When Umbridge gave the order to the Aurors to attack the magical beings, Amelia stopped them by raising her hand. The wizards held back, waiting for orders. Cornelius Fudge had to reassure his follower with a few words in a low voice. One of the Aurors had explained to the Minister the relationship of the animals with the werewolves. He knew that if just one of the Grim was attacked without reason, he would have the entire wizarding world after him for attacking a famililar.
As soon as Harry arrived, he looked at Minerva, who gestured to him where to go. The green-eyed man went to join the other champions in a tent near the arena. Shadow stayed with Hermione.
The Headmasters and representatives of the ministry entered the tent and left a few minutes later. Without saying anything, they sat down in their seats and began the first test.
Minerva's annoyed face said that the test would be dangerous.
A couple of young people approached Filius and Pomona with some trepidation, to tell them where they would sit during the test.
The group of apprentices took their places in a small area. Minerva and the rest glared at Dumbledore. The old bastard had placed them between Gryffindor and Slytherin.
It wasn't hard to see a completely red and furious Ron Weasley, looking in Hermione's direction. She could also see Draco Malfoy and his two closet followers approaching, ready to do their thing. The presence of Filius and Pomona in front of all the young people didn't seem to bother them.
" Albus." said Minerva." If your students mess with mine I have given them permission to defend themselves." The old man looked at the young apprentices and noticed who was approaching.
" I don't think a childish thing..."
" We don't play! " was the woman's response. " Nor do we allow harassment. Whatever happens is your fault, I've warned you. " The old man thought for only a second before realizing that the woman was not exaggerating.
" Severus." he said to his deputy Headmaster." Please move the... apprentices near the French delegation."
" Can't puppies handle a few insults? " he replied ironically.
" No, and I fear they will respond too strongly, " added the old man. The potioner's face became serious.
" The ministry…"
" Do you think that after what happened they would dare to do something? " the old man silenced him. " Please do it."
Before Malfoy and his people could begin, Snape arrived and took the apprentices away. He placed them between the French and the Ravenclaws. This movement of places went unnoticed by few.
" Welcome to the first test of the Triwizard Tournament!" everyone heard a magically amplified voice." I am Ludo Bagman and I will be your commentator!" there was some applause." In the first test the champions will have to prove their courage by facing...!" he paused to add excitement." A DRAGON!" surprise exploded in the stands." They will have to recover a golden egg from a nest protected by a dragon! Today will undoubtedly be an incredible day!" he made a sign towards the arena." Now the first dragon will enter! Although we will be protected, I have been asked that no one shout or throw anything into the arena for their own safety!" the giant door opened and everyone could see the first creature.
When Bagman explained the test, many people were terrified. When they saw the first creature, there were even a few screams and fainting spells. Hermione seemed calm, but inside she was about to run away to join Harry.
{SCENE BREAK}
The first test finally began. The first to leave the champions' tent was Cedric Diggony. He had some trouble avoiding the dragon and successfully completing the test. He used some transfigurations to distract the great reptile and take the egg. As he retreated, he received part of a jet of flames that the dragon launched at him. He ended up entering the infirmary to have his burns treated.
Something similar happened to the beautiful French girl. She used a spell while singing a beautiful song in French. From the sleepy appearance of many, it was undoubtedly a lullaby. As soon as the terrible being fell asleep, the young woman quickly went for her prize. She was unlucky that a snort from the dragon came with some flames that destroyed her clothes. Although what was left in sight pleased most of the men.
[T/N: Lucky bastards!]
Victor Krum gave a powerful performance. Too much for the taste of many. Especially the dragon keepers. With a spell, he blinded the dragon, and the disoriented dragon crushed several of her eggs. Then he carefully approached and took the golden egg.
It was Harry's turn.
From their position, the apprentices watched the performance of the three champions calmly. It seemed as if it had nothing to do with them.
When their champion came out they cheered him on. Boos could be heard from the snake area.
Harry stood in front of the dragon. The animal growled menacingly.
The young man applied a spell to his throat and soon everyone could hear a hissing sound coming out of his mouth. Many shuddered at the sound.
" * Greetings mother *!" the young man began." * I do not wish any harm to you or your young *!" the dragon looked at him alertly." * Someone has put something among your eggs that is not yours and that could harm your nest *!" the being growled and without stopping to look at him she approached the nest. She sniffed at her eggs and gave a slight start." I know you will not allow me to get close, so I ask you to give me what should not be there *! * Then you can return with your young to your lair *!" the enormous dragon raised her neck to the sky and let out a large jet of flames. Then and without taking her eyes off the young man, she used her tail to accurately move the golden egg out of the nest. As soon as it was out she gave it a strong blow with her tail, throwing it near the green-eyed man." * I thank you great mother *! *I hope all your offspring grow up as strong and powerful as you*!" the being's response was a less threatening growl.
Carefully, the green-eyed man bent down and took the golden egg. Everyone in the stands watched in amazement as he spoke to the dragon and convinced her to give him the egg.
With a small bow to the magical animal, the young man stepped back and when he was far enough away he turned and returned to the champions' tent.
At that moment, all the apprentices in the stands let out a howl, accompanied by the Grim. Their champion and alpha had defeated them all with ease.
From the judges' table, Albus watched in disbelief. The boy had used Parsel tongue to communicate with the dragon and solve the test without casting a single spell.
At his side, Minerva smiled happily.
Some applause began to be heard among the students, little by little others joined in.
The Lupinids' joy was short-lived. The judges gave Harry the lowest score, claiming he had not used any spells. Minerva and others were furious at this blatant theft. When a smiling Harry was reunited with his wife and friends, the apprentices' protests disappeared. They understood that their leader did not care about the result.
After receiving the points and to the amazement of everyone, the group of apprentices closed ranks around their champion and walked away into the forest. The last thing heard was a howl.
Albus went straight to Minerva.
" Why are you leaving? " asked the old wizard. " We have organized a dinner…"
" We've made everything very clear." the Scottish woman interrupted him." Only for the necessary tests and events. A lunch at the castle is not necessary."
Minerva and the rest of the werewolf teachers greeted some authorities and left. The last to leave was Andromeda, accompanied by some of the parents who were members of her group.
The minister and his undersecretary were very upset. Nothing had gone as they had planned and, on top of that, practically no one had come to treat him as he deserved.
