Chapter 56: Chapter 56: Summoning a Death Knight

In the cemetery of Peter's territory, near a small church, Su Nan arrived with Robert to execute his plan.

In this era, cemeteries were often located near churches or monasteries. When Father Louis heard Su Nan's request, his expression grew peculiar, but he said nothing. Instead, he ordered the church's deacon to escort Su Nan and his entourage to the cemetery. Using the pretext of holding a mass, he gathered the faithful and priests inside the church, providing Su Nan with privacy.

No one suspected Su Nan of foul play. As a baron, it was unthinkable for him to engage in theft or other misdeeds in a cemetery.

Before Su Nan departed, Father Louis caught him at the church entrance. Speaking in hushed tones, he warned, "Whatever you're planning, be careful not to go too far.

"Some devout followers of the Storm God have started reporting suspicions of evil forces in Peter's lands.

"The Storm Church headquarters has informed me that they will soon send a bishop to inspect our territory. I don't know why they would act now, especially with Grass King Kaloyan slaughtering estates near their capital. The Storm Church has been relocating populations from surrounding areas into the capital to fill the gaps left by the war casualties."

Father Louis sighed, his voice earnest. "The Storm Church is pragmatic. They wouldn't act on a few reports during such tumultuous times. I can't fathom their motives."

Su Nan frowned. Could it be related to the wizard relic again?

Regardless, Su Nan wasn't overly concerned. If the Storm Church came, their primary target should be the Supreme Order sorcerers, not him.

As they stood at the grand church gates, Father Louis hesitated, then added quietly, "My health has been declining lately, and I'm struggling to keep up with my duties. Fortunately, your distant relative, a young man named Joshua—your cousin of sorts—has been helping me."

Su Nan glanced toward the church and noticed a young priest, around eighteen years old, busily maintaining order among the congregation.

Father Louis continued, his tone conflicted. "I've come to realize my mistake. If I could regain my youth, I wouldn't tell a soul. It would prevent others from taking advantage of our family."

He sighed again. "Trying to please the high nobility brings little benefit. They're too afraid of Kaloyan and the Bulgars to even leave their castles. How could they possibly help us?"

Su Nan raised an eyebrow. It seemed Father Louis was once again hinting for the werewolf potion.

However, Su Nan knew the werewolf potion wasn't suitable for someone who spent most of their time in a church. While the potion granted triple immortality, it also heightened aggression, a side effect of the werewolf's magical nature.

If a priest remained inactive or isolated within the church, the potion's effects might lead to uncontrollable outbursts against the congregation.

Moreover, the use of silver relics by the church would expose Father Louis if he became a werewolf, especially with a bishop's visit on the horizon.

Su Nan dismissed the suggestion tactfully. "Now is not the time."

Father Louis, ever shrewd, caught the subtext in Su Nan's reply. "It's because of the bishop, isn't it? I see."

As he turned back to address a devout follower approaching him, Father Louis slipped effortlessly into his pastoral demeanor.

"Father Louis," the believer asked, "I have a theological question that's troubled me for a long time. Why do the names Storm God and Lord of Storms differ by just one word? If God is one and indivisible, why does He have multiple names?"

Father Louis adopted a compassionate expression and explained, "You are correct. However, the difference lies in humanity's inability to fully comprehend the divine. Merely knowing God's true name could overwhelm us, much like a small river cannot hold the vast ocean.

"Therefore, everything from God reaches us in a distorted form. The Storm God uses different names to teach us His ways, each revealing a different facet of His essence..."

While Father Louis indulged in a lengthy theological discourse, Su Nan and Robert slipped away to the cemetery.

Robert remarked uneasily, "My lord, this place is too close to the church. It might draw unwanted attention."

Su Nan pulled out a translucent potion and crushed the vial in his hand. The liquid, resembling mercury, spilled onto the ground, forming a thin silver line that encircled the entire cemetery.

As the nearly imperceptible silver line completed its circuit, a ward was activated, creating a barrier that repelled ordinary humans.

Su Nan explained to Robert, "This Mortal Repellent Potion creates a ward where anyone with Mental Power below 2 will subconsciously ignore what happens within its boundary. Even if they see something, they'll dismiss it as unimportant."

"It only lasts for an hour, but that's more than enough time for us."

Robert nodded in admiration. "That's an impressive potion."

Su Nan retrieved a vial of transparent liquid—the half-finished Death Knight Potion. Uncorking it, he held it aloft. The potion emitted an otherworldly glow, somewhere between black and blue.

The light swept across the cemetery, agitating the lingering souls within.

Su Nan frowned. "So many spirits remain in this cemetery."

According to the Storm Church, these souls should have entered the Storm God's divine kingdom upon death.

It seems the threshold for entering the divine kingdom is much higher than the Church admits. They've lied about this, or these souls wouldn't still be here.

Standing amidst the restless spirits, Su Nan declared, "I need a loyal subordinate. Someone who will serve me unconditionally, charging into battle on my behalf."

"In return, I will grant you power—the ability to command death and frost. But you must give me a reason to choose you."

The cemetery erupted with clamoring voices.

"Choose me! Let me live again!"

"No, choose me, noble baron!"

"Pick me! Pick me!"

Robert instinctively drew his sword, stepping protectively in front of Su Nan.

But Su Nan had no intention of selecting a soul at random. He had two objectives:

1. Identify the graves

of the recently deceased.

2. Find the most suitable candidate among the spirits.
