Wall Rose, Trost District

It was late in the afternoon. The blazing sun hung high in the sky, fueling the perpetually blistering heat.

CLANG! CLANG! CLANG!

"Huh? …."

Heads turned, eyes flicking toward the massive walls. The ringing of bells echoed through half the city. At this hour, there was only one reason for those bells to sound.

"… Is … is it them? …"

"Tch! Who else could it be?" A middle-aged man, sweat beading on his forehead as he hauled a heavy crate, turned his head toward the walls and scoffed.

Everyone knew the Survey Corps had left on an expedition early this morning. That alone was nothing special—what made this one different was that it had come barely two days after the last disastrous mission. The fact that Garrison soldiers had been dragged into it had only fueled the speculation.

No one understood what the Survey Corps were doing this time.

Why exactly were they pushing for another expedition despite the last one having so many casualties? Had they finally discovered something of use?

These Questions soon turned into a widespread discussion.

As the bells continued tolling, murmurs spread through the streets.

"The Survey Corps are back again."

"So … so soon?"

"It can't be. It's barely been six hours."

"Yeah, and yet here they are."

"What the hell happened…"

"How could I know? But if I had to guess, they're bringing in plenty of dead bodies with them again."

"Unbelievable."

Upon the walls, The Garrison soldiers stationed at the gates squinted into the distance, watching the returning expedition approach.

The moment they got a good look at them, a heavy silence settled over the group.

"… Is this considered good or bad?" one soldier muttered.

"Tch, take a guess."

"It could be good. I mean … It means they found him quickly, right? So maybe they didn't need to spend as much time outside …"

"Or they suffered heavy enough casualties to force a retreat. Which one sounds more realistic?" another cut in, voice grim?

It was a pattern they all knew. Tried and tested so that even commoners could gauge just how bad each expedition went.

Time.

The shorter the expedition, the worse the outcome. This wasn't absolute though, as there were always exceptions over the years, but that basically meant the death rate was even higher. Nor were the set upon objectives completed.

If they were coming back already, it meant either they had succeeded instantly… or the casualties had been so severe they couldn't continue.

Unlike the citizens, many of The Garrison soldiers more or less had an inkling of what this Expedition was for. Garrison soldiers were involved, after all. Coupled with the ruckus at The Branch HQ, it was impossible to hide completely.

People weren't idiots.

"Open It Up!"

On the streets, people began gathering near the main road leading to the gate. Some anxiously searched the approaching riders for familiar faces, desperately hoping their loved ones had survived. Others simply stood and watched, waiting to see what miserable news would come this time. They didn't hold out much hope though for any good results.

Then, as the expedition drew closer, someone in the crowd spoke.

The Garrison soldiers up on the walls simply turned their heads away. The sight was too miserable. Leaving loudly in the morning, the Corps return was a mess.

Many were bandaged in different areas. Many were missing limbs. Some hands, some legs. This wasn't the dealbreaker though.

"…. Aren't they fewer than this morning?"

"Far fewer. I'd say almost half."

"…. By the Walls …"

"Everyone else must've been eaten."

"Yeah. Sad that I expected anything else."

The Garrison members on the walls watched their return.

"Tch, what did I say?"

"Huh? …."

"Too shocked to listen, huh?"

"… Um … No, not that …"

One of the Garrison soldiers up on the walls shook his head slightly. His eyes locked onto something in the returning procession, and his brow furrowed.

"… Hey. Is that who I think it is?"

Numerous carts had been drawn into the gates. One of them, a certain individual, sat in one of them as he was driven through the streets.

Dark hair, steel blue eyes, Survey Corps uniform and a bandaged leg. No one else besides Humanity's Strongest Soldier.

"No way. Is that Captain Levi?"

"Even he was injured? So much that he couldn't even ride a horse?"

"My god …" Levi

The others turned, following his gaze, and exclaimed. "Hey, who is that guy …."

In the same drawn cart that rumbled across the dirt road, someone else oddly drew attention.

It was a young face. Dark, curly hair and dark eyes, and dark clothing that didn't blend with the Expedition Team uniforms.

Wrapped around his frame, his arms rested casually at his sides, as if the chaos around him was of no concern. Unlike the wounded, he showed no visible injuries, and yet he sat in a cart as though he had to be transported.

"Who's that in the cart? He's not one of ours, is he?"

"I don't know. Perhaps he's from the Scout Regiment."

"He's not in uniform. Why is that the case?"

"… I didn't see him leave with the expedition in the morning either."

"A civilian then?"

"No way. No one from inside the walls would be out there. It's suicidal."

"Yeah. How did he even get out in the first place?"

"… Outside?"

The murmurs spread like wildfire. More and more people began noticing the wounded Levi Ackerman in the cart, and its strange occupant.

"It's Captain Levi …."

"Damn! Even he was injured."

"Another disaster…."

"Who's that riding next to him?"

"Yeah. Why is he dressed so strangely?"

"Looks like you're getting all the attention."

In the cart, Levi muttered towards the boy opposite. Seiji didn't respond.

Soon, the voices turned from quiet speculation to outright questioning.

"Hey, Commander Erwin!"

A man in the crowd shouted as the returning soldiers rode past. Erwin, leading at the front of the formation, barely turned his head, but that didn't stop others from speaking up.

"What the hell happened out there?"

"Why did you leave so soon after the last expedition?"

"Did you really have to drag The Garrison into it?"

"Is the information you found even worth the number of dead!?"

"Do you think the dead have no regrets? Answer us."

The questions came rapid-fire, frustration and desperation bleeding into the voices. They had lost too many soldiers in the last expedition. The people deserved to know why.

And yet, Erwin's expression remained unreadable.

"Erwin. Don't you think we should say something? …" Hange riding alongside him, couldn't help but mutter amidst the chaos.

"Time isn't right, Hange …." The Survey Corps Commander replied. "We barely know anything ourselves. Plus, although he has agreed to cooperate with us, Seiji's existence is a complicated matter to explain."

The man paused for a moment. "He hasn't even agreed to tell us anything yet. And I don't have the authority to agree to his demands. Without any answers ourselves, revealing things to the public will only arouse more questions."

Erwin had every reason to be worried. Seiji's existence basically flew against the propaganda the Royal Government had been feeding their citizens for a Century. How they would react to what Seiji's presence was really an issue that troubled him.

He knew how deep the corruption ran in The Royal Government. In his perspective, it would be good enough to get them to accept that they might not really be The Last Of Mankind.

For now, he had to plan.

Hange fell silent. Looking at the raging crowd, she couldn't help herself. "I know, but. We don't have to say everything. Just a little assurance to soothe their hearts …"

Erwin remained silent. Weighing her words. "… Besides, this isn't going to be kept secret for long. Unless you expect all the Garrison soldiers to keep silent."

"…." The shouts and screams grew louder. Most of it mixed with the sobs of crying mothers.

In that instant, Erwin signalled the convoy to stop. The crowd instantly grew silent, stunned.

'Is he going to ….'

Their thoughts were interrupted as Erwin spoke.

"Citizens of Trost. I am Commander Erwin Smith, The 13th Commander Of The Survey Corps …" Seeing the silence, he continued.

"Earlier today, The Survey Corps had a joint Expedition with The Garrison Regiment to achieve an important objective, that may greatly benefit mankind. And although we have suffered loses as a result, it is my pleasure to inform you, that their deaths have not been in vain …"

"… The objective of the mission was fulfilled."

"…." silence. The streets fell silent as most couldn't believe what they heard. Ever since the fall of Wall Maria, when the Survey Corps changed their objective to recovering information to take back the lost land, the expeditions outside the walls had all brought back the same results.

Nothing. Now however, they were being told otherwise.

In the cart, Seiji and Levi both looked over. "What is he doing?" Seiji asked with a raised eyebrow. This time, it was Levi's turn to keep him silent.

The seconds elapsed in silence, until someone asked hesitantly.

"… So, you found something? About the Titans?"

In an instant, numerous questions broke out again.

"What exactly is it?"

"Did the expedition discover new information about The Titans? …."

"Commander! Do we now know what they are and where the come from?"

"You aren't giving us false hope, are you?…."

Noise grew rapidly. Erwin raised his hands again, calming the crowd as thy held their breath in anticipation.

"I know many of you are sad. Heartbroken, and outraged. …."

Erwin's gaze flickered to the cart in the procession—just briefly—before returning forward.

"But I assure you that this is not a lie to appease you. It is the truth. If you don't believe us, The soldiers of The Garrison can testify to this. We have made significant progress." His voice was firm, measured as gasps came from all around. "I appeal to you all to be patient. More will be revealed when the time is right. But rest assured that all the deaths so far have not been in vain. Thank you, that is all."

Erwin muttered before turning around and resuming the movement.

Without revealing specifics, this was the best he could do.

The murmurs returned. The citizens exchanged glances. His words meant something—but not enough. He had answered, but he hadn't really answered. Something they couldn't understand. Why?

The clamoring rang out once again, the general public growing desperate for answers. This time, Erwin didn't respond and just walked away with light steps.

On A Rooftop Overlooking the Streets of Trost

Perched high above, two figures crouched in the shadows. One of them peered through binoculars, observing the returning procession below.

"The Survey Corps have returned." The first figure murmured.

The second, adjusting their stance, tilted their head slightly. "Did they bring anyone odd?"

The observer remained silent for a moment, scanning the wagons. Then, their grip on the binoculars tightened slightly. "From the looks of it… Yes."

Their partner's head turned sharply. "Explain."

"There's someone in the cart with Levi Ackerman. Not one of theirs. Dressed differently."

A pause.

"That's enough. Report back to the leader." The second figure stood, disappearing into the shadows.

The observer lingered for half a second, eyes locked on the cart. Then, with a flicker of movement, they too were gone.

Inside the Cart

The moment they vanished, Seiji's eyes flicked toward their direction.

Levi noticed. "Something wrong?"

Seiji's lips curled into a faint smile. "Don't worry about it. Everything is just fine."

Levi frowned but said nothing.

The Expedition convoy rode through the streets of Trost, their direction headed towards The Garrison Branch.

Time Elapsed.

The convoy finally reached the Trost Garrison HQ. The exhausted soldiers rode in, their horses slowing as they approached the large compound.

Then, as the gates opened, murmurs rippled through the ranks.

A large gathering of soldiers stood at attention inside.

"Is this a welcome party?" one of the returning scouts muttered.

"Since when do we get those?" another added, voice wary.

Levi narrowed his eyes. Something was off.

"Not these guys." He muttered.

Seiji, watching the scene with interest, glanced over. "Anything the matter?"

Levi's gaze sharpened. "Yeah. Trouble".

He said, noting the gathered officers.

'Dot Pixis of The Garrison, Nile Dok of The Military Police, and that's .....'.

Levi's attention is drawn to a certain group of individuals standing behind another man. One who stood beside Nile Dok and Pixis.

'… Those guys, they're from the Capital. The First interior Squad. The doglegs of The Royal Government'.

His gaze lingered on a separate group standing stiffly, their uniforms and emblems the same as the military police, but they carried themselves with an air of superiority above everyone else.

'What are these bastards doing here?'

At the forefront, Erwin frowned slightly at the sight before him. Just like Levi, he could make out the identity of the separate soldiers.

'The First Interior Squad? What are they doing outside the Capital?'

The group approaches and dismounts.

"Pixis, Nile. What's the matter?" Erwin asked.

Nile Dok, Commander of The Military Police Force. Currently, his face was scrunched up slightly, stern looking.

"…. Erwin, you and the Expedition team will be placed under investigation, by order of the Royal Government".

"Huh?"

"… Hold on …"

"What the hell?"

Numerous exclamations emerged from the Expedition team. None understanding what was happening.

Levi's gaze darkened even more. 'This isn't going to be good'. He thought, his gaze turning to Seiji who was watching the show with amusement.

Looking at Nile speaking in the distance. Nile happened to meet his gaze.

"This is the one you brought back from beyond?"

Erwin's eyes narrowed even more. He already understood what this was for. Sure enough, his worries came true.

"Yes. But Nile …"

"I'll take it from here." Djel Sannes, the Interior Military Police officer standing next to Nile and Pixis spoke suddenly.

Without waiting for anyone to reply, he took several steps. Locked onto Seiji in the cart and ordered.

"Arrest him."

In an instant, the sound of cracking guns fell into Seiji's ears as dozens of them were pointed at him from all directions.

Seiji raised an eyebrow.

'Oh, this is gonna be good'.
