Witches: Starting as a Lord Marrying a Wife

Chapter 8: Chapter 8: Proposing to the Witch

Back at Frostwolf Ridge, David quietly returned to the castle with the Ice Witch, Amy, in tow.

"Master David."

The Grey Wolf Knight let out a breath of relief upon seeing David return safely.

David nodded lightly and shared the news of Baron Lynx's demise.

"Dead? Hmph, he got off easy!"

The Grey Wolf Knight snorted, his face revealing a mix of satisfaction and disdain. He and Baron Lynx had once been friends, but the Lynx family's betrayal had turned them into bitter enemies.

Now, knowing David had eliminated the traitor, the knight felt a surge of vindication. This was the fate of anyone who dared to betray the Frostwolf family!

"Those who betrayed the Frostwolf family will pay the price," the Grey Wolf Knight declared. He was eager to celebrate but held back, aware that the mission's primary goal had been to rescue the witch.

"These are the valuables I retrieved from Baron Lynx's castle," David said, handing over a small chest. "Use this to ease the territory's financial strain."

The Grey Wolf Knight's eyes lit up as he took the chest, nodding in gratitude.

---

After delegating further matters to the knight, David returned to the castle to visit the witch he had gone to such lengths to rescue.

---

In a tower room on the castle's third floor, David opened the door to find the witch standing by the window, lost in thought.

Amy had cleaned herself up and now wore one of Leah's white dresses. Her silver hair shimmered in the sunlight, adorned with a snowflake-shaped hairpin.

Hearing the door open, she flinched and instinctively hid behind the curtain—a reflexive act of self-preservation, as witches were perpetually hunted by the Church.

David paused, his eyes reflecting a hint of surprise.

According to the information he'd received, Amy had been captured after using her powers to fend off a pack of wolves attacking a village.

It was hard to reconcile the image of this timid girl with someone who had risked her life to protect others.

It was a stark reminder of how absurd the Church's claims of witches being "devil's agents" were.

Even more ironic was the fact that the villagers she had saved were the ones who reported her to the Church.

Amy soon realized it was her rescuer and emerged cautiously from behind the curtain.

---

"How was your rest?" David asked.

"I rested well, thank you, Lord," Amy replied with a polite bow, her face filled with genuine gratitude.

During her time in the dungeon, she had resigned herself to death. The sudden rescue had been completely unexpected.

Though she wasn't sure of David's motives, she was deeply thankful. Bowing her head, she asked softly, "Lord, why did you save me?"

"Why did I save you?" David smiled and countered, "Why did you save those villagers?"

Amy lowered her gaze, her expression complicated. "They… they're good people."

Before they discovered she was a witch, the villagers had indeed treated her kindly. But their fear of witches had eclipsed their gratitude.

Though she had done nothing wrong, her mere existence as a witch had made her a target.

---

"Now it's my turn to answer your question," David said, his tone becoming serious.

"I saved you because I need your help. Frostwolf Ridge is under threat from the northern nobles, and I believe the assistance of a witch could be crucial."

Amy looked up, her eyes widening in surprise. "You're not afraid of witches?"

"Afraid? You mean the so-called 'devil's agents' the Church talks about?" David chuckled. "That's nothing but lies. Witches and gods alike are simply beings with great power."

For the first time, Amy's eyes sparkled with hope.

This was the first time anyone had acknowledged her as just another person—not as a threat, but as someone with potential.

Still, her smile faded as she spoke. "I've been searching for traces of other witches and their organizations. I'm sorry, Lord, but I'm afraid I can't help you."

David frowned slightly, disappointed by her response.

But rescuing Amy hadn't been solely about finding the witches' organization.

---

Taking a deep breath, David looked at her intently and said, "Miss Amy, there's something else I'd like to ask of you."

"Please, go ahead. If it's within my power, I'll help," Amy replied earnestly.

David didn't hesitate. "Miss Amy, I would like to ask you to marry me."

Amy froze, her cheeks turning crimson. Her mind went blank as the unexpected proposal struck her like a bolt of lightning.

"L-Lord… you… you must be joking!" she stammered, flustered. Though she was already twenty, she had never once considered marriage.

"I assure you, I'm not joking," David said seriously. "To approach the witches' organization, I need a suitable identity. As the husband of a witch, I'd stand a better chance of earning their trust.

"More than that, Miss Amy, you're an extraordinary and beautiful woman. I confess I've grown fond of you.

"If you agree to marry me, I swear on my honor as the head of the Frostwolf family to uphold my responsibilities as your husband. Even in the face of the Church, I will protect you with my life."

Amy was at a loss for words, her hands fidgeting nervously.

David's words struck a chord deep within her.

As a fugitive hunted by the Church, her life had been one of constant fear and isolation.

Now, here was a knight who had risked his life to save her, offering her not just protection but a promise of unwavering loyalty.

Though they had only just met, and despite knowing his ulte

rior motives, Amy found herself unable to refuse.

Blushing deeply, she lowered her head and whispered, "I… I do."
