Su Jiu and Ji Yuxian walked until the sky was almost dark. Halfway through their journey, they managed to defeat a group of assassins who were after them. They held onto a booklet that emitted fire as they walked out of the forest, and a small valley appeared in front of them.

It was dark before they managed to walk out of the valley. They found a bit of flat ground to lay down on and decided to take a break.

“Wait for me here. I’ll go look for some food!” Su Jiu told Ji Yuxian as she headed off with a bamboo pole.

Within fifteen minutes, Su Jiu returned with two hares on the pole.

She plucked the rabbits’ fur, cut their chests open, and cleaned the insides. Su Jiu laughed as she commented, “Our luck is not bad. It’s usually quite difficult to source food during this period in the mountains!”

This time around, Ji Yuxian did not stay idle like the last time. He helped to pick firewood and handled the tougher chores. His movements were elegant and breezy. Hearing Su Jiu’s comment, his eyebrows moved slightly, and he laughed faintly as he replied, “You all used to hunt frequently in the mountains?”

Su Jiu nodded and responded, “It was tough to hunt anything down in winter.”

“Then what did you all eat?”

“We ate whatever we found, as long as it was edible,” Su Jiu answered indifferently.

Ji Yuxian frowned a little and decided not to ask any more questions.

Soon, the aroma of meat permeated the air. Su Jiu swallowed. Passing one of the hares to Ji Yuxian, she warned him, “Be careful, it’s hot!”

Ji Yuxian retrieved it and placed a piece of carefully torn meat into his mouth. It was not salty, and the smoky flavor covered the meat smell. Nonetheless, he seemed to have more of an appetite for this than the extravagant dishes he ate back home.

Perhaps he was very hungry!

Su Jiu removed the rabbit meat from the fire and kept blowing on it. She tore off its thigh and took a big bite out of it. It was so hot that she kept trying to breathe out the steam.

Ji Yuxian chuckled and said, “Didn’t you just warn me that it was very hot?”

Su Jiu raised her eyebrows and replied, ” I’m hungry!”

She had just placed a piece of meat into her mouth when she suddenly narrowed her eyes and turned behind to look into the darkness. She said in a low voice, “Who’s that? Show yourselves!”

The tree behind her rustled for a moment. Su Jiu carried the bamboo pole with her as she gradually walked toward it. She called out again, “Come out now, or I’ll kill you!”

“Don’t! Don’t kill us! We’re good people!”

A male and a female emerged from behind the tree. They kneeled on the ground as they pleaded, “Young warrior, please spare our lives. We’re good people!”

Su Jiu was dressed in a short gown with short sleeves. Her black hair was tied up in a high ponytail and she wore a murderous look on her face. Both the man and the woman thought that she was a man.

Su Jiu looked at them coldly and asked, “Who are you people? Why are you here?”

The two outsiders stared at each other. The man replied, anxiously, “We would not dare deceive you, Young Warrior. We were supposed to visit our relatives but got lost in the woods. We’ve spent a day trying to find our way out, but we’re still lost. We are so hungry. There was a fragrant smell, so we decided to follow it and ended up here.”

Su Jiu glanced at them and kept the bamboo pole away. She said softly, “Come over here!”

They clung onto each other cautiously and slowly walked toward the fire. Their gaze landed on the rabbit meat and they stared at it longingly.

“Sit down!” Su Jiu said as she let them sit closer to the fire after noticing that they were wearing very thin clothing.

“Thank you! Thank you so much, both of you!” the man thanked Su Jiu and Ji Yuxian, constantly bowing down. After helping the woman into her seat, he sat down as well.

Ji Yuxian briefly glanced at the pair. He added some wood into the fire and remained silent.

Under the firelight, Su Jiu was able to see the two strangers’ appearance clearly.

The man was scrawny. He wore a grey gown and his complexion was fair. He looked like an intellectual. The woman beside her had a hairstyle that was very popular at the moment—there was a jasper hairpin that went along with it. She had curved eyebrows and narrow eyes, and her face was delicate and pretty. Even though her gown had been damaged by thorns, it was still obvious that her clothing was made from luxurious silk.

They sat down with their heads lowered. The woman tightly held onto the man’s arms, feeling both shameful and wary.

Su Jiu passed the meat to them and said, “This is for you. Eat up!”

The man instantly lifted his head. He stared at the rabbit meat and swallowed, feeling skeptical he cautiously asked, “For us?”

Su Jiu nodded and replied, “Take it!”

A look of joy immediately appeared in his eyes. He extended both hands as he retrieved the meat. Tearing off piece of it, he handed it to the woman beside him. He said to her, “Lian Er, you can eat first!”

She took it from him and glanced up at Su Jiu before swiftly lowering her head. She carefully placed the meat in her mouth and swallowed it without even chewing.

It was clear that they were starving!

The man raised his head and said gratefully, “Thank you so much. We, as disciples, are extremely grateful to both of you. One day, we will find a way to repay you!”

“It’s just a rabbit, so you don’t have to worry about it!” Su Jiu replied with a laugh, seemingly unbothered as she continued to cook the other rabbit over the fire.

After Lian Er ate something, she felt warmer. She lifted her head and peered at Su Jiu, noticing that she was a woman. Lian Er whispered gently to Su Jiu, “We are from Chongzhou. We originally wanted to visit the capital city to find our relatives but ended up entering the wrong forest. We have been stuck here for a day. Luckily, we found people like you who are willing to help us.”

“It’s no use meeting us. We’ve lost our way too!” Su Jiu responded as she laughed with a shrug.

The two newcomers were stunned and instantly revealed looks of anxiety and worry on their faces again.

The intellectual noticed Ji Yuxian, who appeared charismatic and conceited. He did not seem like a commoner. He addressed Ji Yuxian respectfully: “I am a disciple and my surname is Xu. This is my fiancée. May I know where you are heading to?”

“Chongzhou.” Ji Yuxian responded coldly and half-heartedly.

“Oh, I see. If that’s the case, it’s still a two-day journey to Chongzhou after you cross this mountain,” Xu Disciple said with a laugh.

It was just that they did not know when they would be out of the mountains.

“When we were on our way, we overheard that there were numerous mountain bandits outside Shenjing City. Did either of you encounter any?” Xu Disciple questioned again.

“They have already been annihilated, so don’t worry!” Su Jiu responded. She laughed as she continued, “You two dared to go outdoors even though you knew about the mountain bandits?”

Lian Er, who was sitting on the opposite side, flushed. She lowered her head as she replied cautiously, “I don’t want to hide the truth from you. We actually sneaked out of our homes.”

“Sneaked out?” Su Jiu repeated as she looked at her, raising her eyebrows in doubt.

“Yes!” Xu Disciple exclaimed. he tore the meat and passed it to Lian Er, then continued in a low voice, “Lian Er and I have known each other since we were young. We were very close childhood friends. It’s just that my family’s finances were on the decline, and Lian Er’s family despised me. They wanted Lian Er to marry someone else instead. We had no choice but to run away to Shengjing, where our relatives are. Not only did we want to escape from Lian Er’s wedding, but we also wanted to prepare for the upcoming Spring metropolitan exam.”

So that’s what it was!

Su Jiu nodded gently.

Couples who were madly in love did exist in real life, just like in the shows.

Ji Yuxian stayed on the side where the fire flickered brightly and reflected on his face. His eyes were flirtatious, though his expression never changed when he heard the couple’s words. He simply continued to roast the rabbit.

Xu Disciple and his fiancée had not eaten for the entire day. Despite trying to maintain their table manners by being modest, the rabbit was soon left only with its bones.

Su Jiu handed them the other rabbit. She stood up and said, “You can eat this. I’ll go hunt for two more!”

Ji Yuxian followed Su Jiu and said, “Let’s go together!”

“It’s alright. Just wait here. The sky is already dark. If we were to wander away from each other, it would be very troublesome!” Su Jiu replied and headed to the forest with her bamboo pole.

“What is your relationship to that lady?” Xu Disciple asked politely.

“My wife!” Ji Yuxian turned his head and replied with a smile. His expression was dull and listless.

Lian Er, who was in Xu Disciple’s arms, glanced at Ji Yuxian, and her face instantly reddened. She quickly looked down and sat straighter.

“Oh!” Xu Disciple called out suddenly, then added apologetically, “I was too brusque!”

“It’s alright!”

Silence later ensued. After Lian Er was done eating, she cuddled in Xu Disciple’s arms. Each embraced the other’s warmth. They whispered to each other and seemed very loving.

Ji Yuxian coughed and said, “I’ll go check on my wife. Please help me watch the fire for a while and don’t let it die out!”

“Yes, yes! Of course! Please go on!” Xu Disciple hurriedly lifted his head toward Ji Yuxian and replied with a chuckle.

Ji Yuxian nodded slightly and walked toward the forest.

After Ji Yuxian left, Lian Er looked up at her fiancée and said, “Both of them look so good. I’ve never seen a couple like them in all of Chongzhou!”

Xu Disciple pinched Lian Er’s waist and narrowed his eyes as he asked, “Are you interested in that Young Master?”

“What are you saying?” Lian Er replied in a coquettish manner. She rolled her eyes at him and fell back into his arms.

There were very few animals roaming the mountains in winter. After hunting for a long time, Su Jiu only managed to capture a chicken and a hedgehog. She abandoned the hedgehog and returned with the chicken.

As she reached their resting area, she slowed her footsteps then stood still, shocked.

Just a few feet away, Xu Disciple and Lian Er sat by the fire. She was leaning against his shoulders and he had his head lowered. Their lips were intertwined, and they were kissing passionately.

Su Jiu’s intuition was often accurate. In the firelight, she could clearly see the crimson, lustful look on Lian Er’s face.

Su Jiu unconsciously took a step back. She hid behind the tall grass and her clear eyes watched the both of them with interest.

She was engrossed in the scene when she suddenly felt someone clutching onto her wrist. A man’s low voice came from behind, “What are you looking at?”

Ji Yuxian looked up, and his smiling eyes immediately turned into shock when he saw what was happening in front of him!

“Shhh!” Su Jiu made a gesture to quieten him down. Then, she happily turned back to continue looking at the young couple making out.

“Don’t watch such indecency!” Ji Yuxian said as he chuckled helplessly. He pulled Su Jiu back into the forest to get away from the love birds.

“What do you think they’re doing?” Su Jiu asked with gleaming eyes, genuinely curious.

“…” Ji Yuxian was speechless for a moment, then he proceeded to ask, “You’ve never seen that before?”

Su Jiu shook her head and replied, “I haven’t!”

She seemed to vaguely understand that level of intimacy.

Suddenly, Ji Yuxian smirked. The moonlight seemed to shine on the waters’ surface. In the dark, Ji Yuxian stopped in his tracks. Leaning his back against a tree, he pulled Su Jiu into his arms, embraced her and looked at her passionately.

“This is something that can only be done between a married couple. Are you curious? Do you want to try it?” Ji Yuxian asked Su Jiu.

Ji Yuxian’s voice was husky, bewildering, and sensuous. His eyes appeared to be even darker and more seductive at night.

Su Jiu licked her lips and asked innocently, “How are we going to try it?”

Ji Yuxian’s eyes seemed to burst into colors—a tinge of red that resembled cherry blossoms in April. He was attractive, and it was tempting to get close to him. He lowered his head slightly and gazed at Su Jiu’s pink lips. He instructed in a low voice, “Don’t move. Listen to me!”

He grabbed Su Jiu’s lower chin and leaned in closer and closer…Finally, their lips touched. They were completely intertwined, with no space between them.

Su Jiu widened her eyes and looked at him momentarily. She was still holding onto the bamboo pole and her knuckles turned slightly white.

Su Jiu’s lips were cool and soft. Ji Yuxian breathed heavily as he continued to kiss her. He licked her lips delicately until he felt a sense of emptiness in his chest as he craved more.

In the darkness, it was as if Su Jiu were falling like the stars. What appeared in front of her had seemingly shattered into fragments of light, flickering right before her. It was causing chaos in her mind.

“Shut your eyes. Open your mouth,” Ji Yuxian commanded softly.

Su Jiu immediately closed her eyes and slightly parted her lips. Ji Yuxian took the chance to enter, an intense desire washing over him. Su Jiu’s mind, on the other hand, was completely blank. She felt like she could be swallowed whole any time.

“Give me your tongue!” Ji Yuxian instructed again.

Ji Yuxian’s voice was deep, like a stream of clear water trying to enter Su Jiu’s blood, capable of calming her down. Su Jiu obediently extended her tongue, and they kissed each other.

Su Jiu was unaware of when the bamboo pole fell onto the ground. Their surroundings were completely silent. Only the sound of their hearts beating irregularly and frantically could be heard.

They kissed for a long time, but Ji Yuxian stopped instantly when Su Jiu found it difficult to breathe.

Su Jiu panted for a bit, and when she opened her eyes, she was staring right into Ji Yuxian’s deep and dark eyes. His gaze fell onto her red lips once again.

This time, Ji Yuxian did not want to kiss her the way he did the first-time around—overly desperate, rough, and experimental. He felt as if he were a bee attempting to taste the nectar’s sweetness for the first time and was in a rush to try up again.

A supposedly trivial kiss turned into one that was long and passionate. They had forgotten their original intention and instead, instinctively, embodied each other’s warmth and compassion.

“Cluck, cluck!”

Suddenly, the chicken that Su Jiu had dropped on the ground had come alive. Despite the bamboo pole sticking through it, it had still managed to escape into the wilderness.

Su Jiu widened her eyes and pushed Ji Yuxian aside as she cried out, “My chicken!”

Ji Yuxian was speechless.

The romantic atmosphere instantly faded away. The air was still cold, and the heat they had felt for each other just moments ago now seemed like an illusion.

Ji Yuxian lifted his hands to smooth his lips. Watching the girl who had just gone off to chase after the chicken, he smiled to himself.

After Su Jiu caught the chicken and returned to the bonfire, Xu Disciple and Lian Er had disappeared. The fire was still burning fiercely.

Su Jiu ran to the river to prepare the chicken. She stuck the bamboo pole through it and put it over the fire.

When her surroundings grew quiet, Su Jiu could vaguely hear the sounds of a woman moaning and the rough gasping of a man. Su Jiu got up, her expression somber as she went forward to take a look.

However, Ji Yuxian grabbed her arm from behind and called out to her, “Mistress, ignore it!”

Su Jiu raised her brows in confusion.

Ji Yuxian chuckled. With a little force, he positioned Su Jiu’s back on his knees, using his robe to wrap around her. He lowered his head, and whispered in her ear, “It’s a thing married couples do. It’s none of our business.”

“A thing between married couples?” Su Jiu replied, only partially understanding what he was saying.

“Yes!” Ji Yuxian replied softly. He held Su Jiu in his arms and thought how slender and gentle she was. He watched her from that angle and lowered his head to kiss her lips. He said to her, dumbly, “There’s more than just kissing. I’ll teach you in the future!”

Ji Yuxian’s tone was ambiguous, his warm breath on Su Jiu’s face. Her chest trembled and she turned away uncomfortably and she muttered softly, “I already know that!”

Ji Yuxian held onto her lower chin to stop her from turning away. He responded, “Practice makes perfect. We’ll kiss ten times a day from now.”

Su Jiu was stunned as she replied, “Do all couples do that?”

“Yes!” Ji Yuxian whispered; his eyes locked on her delicate eyebrows as he moved forward to kiss her.

The firelight flickered between them as they continued kissing. The water was reflective, and the light that shone on them exposed their flushed faces.

Ji Yuxian’s eyelids were half-closed, and his foxlike eyes were blurry yet beautiful. He kissed Su Jiu carefully and seriously, enticing her to respond to him. He sunk in deeper and deeper, preventing her from escaping.

Su Jiu was locked in Ji Yuxian’s embrace. Her entire body felt comfortable in the heat and warmth he was giving off. Her arms went weak, and she unconsciously grabbed his robe tightly over his chest area. It felt a bit forced, yet she was glad to cuddle in his warm embrace.

It felt as if both of them had discovered something new, and they could not wait to explore and familiarize themselves with the unknown. Even more, they could not seem to escape from that inexplicable racing heartbeat.

Some time passed, and the smell of the chicken that was now charred over the fire filled the air. The sound of footsteps on withered grass could be heard in the distance. Ji Yuxian raised an eyebrow and lifted his head slowly only to see Su Jiu in a daze, her red lips slightly swollen. That innocent look on her face made his heart jump, and he could not wait to kiss her again.

“Did you like it?” Ji Yuxian asked in a flirtatious and teasing manner. His lips were bright red and his eyes were full of charm.

Su Jiu gradually returned to reality. She sniffed the air and jumped up as she cried, “The chicken is burned!”

“Let me do it!” Ji Yuxian said as he trapped Su Jiu in his arms to stop her from moving. He extended his arms to retrieve the chicken and tore off a small piece of meat before feeding it to Su Jiu.

Seeing such a gentle gesture coming from Ji Yuxian, Su Jiu felt extremely uneasy and said to him, “I think it’s really weird for you to behave this way!”

Ji Yuxian took the opportunity to stuff the meat into her mouth and chuckled as he said, “You’ll get used to it!”

Su Jiu chewed on the meat and looked at him with wide eyes. She mumbled, “Do you have anything to ask me? Don’t worry, even if you don’t act this way, I will still protect you!”

“Don’t think so much, just eat the meat!” Ji Yuxian replied as he continued feeding her the drumstick.

Su Jiu decided to let it go. As she stared at the chicken in Ji Yuxian’s hands, she thought to herself, why should I reject someone trying to treat me well?

When Xu Disciple and Lian Er returned, they saw the intimate posture that both Ji Yuxian and Su Jiu were in, and their flushed faces turned even redder. They sat carefully opposite them, and Xu Disciple explained, “When you two went hunting, we went to pick some firewood!”

There was an attempt to cover up their deed, which made the atmosphere even more awkward and embarrassing. Lian Er leaned against Xu Disciple’s back and lifted her hands to tidy her slightly messy hair, lowering her head further.

Su Jiu laughed, as if wanting to say something, but Ji Yuxian shoved a piece of meat into her mouth right then and there.

As night gradually fell, the fog started to build up, and darkness began to engulf the aea surrounding the fire.

Ji Yuxian fed the entire chicken to Su Jiu and later used his handkerchief to wipe her mouth. He cleaned his hand with it, leaned against the tree trunk and said in a low voice, “It’s late. You two can do whatever you want!”

He tightened Su Jiu’s robe upon speaking and pinched her cheeks without any regard for the couple next to them. He said, “Mistress, you can go to sleep now!”

Su Jiu was struggling to snuggle out of his arms as she wondered how they were going to sleep if they were hugging each other.

“Don’t move. It’s cold outside!” Ji Yuxian used one hand to hold onto Su Jiu’s waist while using the other to press her head against his chest. This action blocked her vision as he instructed, “Good girl. Go to sleep!”

Su Jiu laid on Ji Yuxian’s shoulders, both her eyes covered by his warm palms. She listened to his strong heartbeat, inhaling the faint lotus smell emanating from his body. The embrace was not so unbearable, after all. Instead, it was warm and cozy. She accepted it, eventually.

Lian Er, who was sitting opposite them, stared at them innocently. She whispered, “They have such a good relationship!”

“You must be laughing at us!” Ji Yuxian said with a smile as he leaned his head against the tree and shut his eyes.

The mountains within the forest gradually quietened down as night fell. Xu Disciple and Lian Er, on the opposite side of the fire, whispered to each other for some time. They snuggled up and eventually fell asleep.

The firewood in the middle continued to burn and crackle, and the firelight shone brightly on their faces as they slept.

After quite some time, the fire slowly died down. Su Jiu was sleeping in Ji Yuxian’s arms while he lay with his back against the tree. His posture was graceful, and his eyes were tightly shut.

The other couple, however, was nowhere to be seen. There was only absolute darkness beyond the firelight.

A few feet behind the tree, Xu Disciple was hugging Lian Er in his arms. He reached his hands into her clothes, kissing her face greedily. The scholarly look that he’d had previously was gone. Instead, something sinister took over his face.

Lian Er’s shy and demure disposition had disappeared even more. Her slightly parted red lips were seductive and enchanting.

“When should we start?” Lian Er asked playfully, her eyes half-squinting.

Xu Disciple held her waist with a fierce grip and smirked as he replied, “The night is still young. There’s no hurry!”

Lian Er tilted her head to the side where the fire was and raised her eyebrows as she commented, “The man is really not bad looking!”

“Why? Are you interested in him?” Xu Disciple replied, his voice low and hoarse. In the foggy night, it sounded even clearer and colder.

“Are you jealous?” Lian Er tiptoed and kissed his lips. She sneered and continued, “Don’t worry, he’s going to be dead soon, so what can I do with him?”

After speaking, she climbed out of Xu Disciple’s embrace and took out a paper bag. She handed it to him and said in a captivating voice, “Go ahead, prevent us from staying here for too many nights. After completing our task, we can go back and enjoy ourselves. Staying here is not fun at all!”

He took the bag from her and swiftly kissed her cheeks. He replied in a foreboding tone, “I’ll listen to you. I’ll treat you better when we get back!”

Lian Er laughed gently and pushed him playfully.

Xu Disciple walked out from behind the tree and slowly approached the fire. He whispered, “Young Master,” but Ji Yuxian was still fast asleep and did not react. He smirked and opened the bag in his hands, scattering the contents all over the fire.

Only an “shhh” sound could be heard, and a whiff of white smoke arose, gradually permeating the air.

Xu Disciple stared at both Ji Yuxian and Su Jiu, slowly retreating to the tree where he and Lian Er reunited again immediately.

Ji Yuxian, who was sound asleep in front of the fire, gradually opened his eyes and glanced at the tree. Calmly, he placed two pills into his mouth. He lowered his head slightly, putting one onto Su Jiu’s lips and attempted to feed it to her.

In her sleep, Su Jiu thought that Ji Yuxian was trying to kiss her again. She stuck out her pink tongue and gently bit onto his lips.

Ji Yuxian was slightly taken aback but involuntarily deepened the kiss.

The pill was still on Su Jiu’s tongue, and Ji Yuxian wanted to help her push it into her throat while preventing her from moving around. After a while, she went still and fell back into a deep sleep.

Ji Yuxian was speechless and just laughed. He hugged her tightly and gently closed his eyes.

In less than half an hour, Xu Disciple and Lian Er emerged from behind the tree. They walked slowly toward Ji Yuxian and Su Jiu, who were sleeping soundly.

Lian Er walked in front of them, gazing at Ji Yuxian’s face as she sighed, “I’ve never seen a man who looks this attractive. He no less attractive than the woman.”

Xu Disciple stood behind and sneered, “It’s just that outer layer of skin. What good can it do?”

Lian Er glanced back at him and laughed as she replied, “You are clearly jealous!”

“Jealous that he is going to be dead soon?” Xu Disciple responded sinisterly.

Lian Er took two steps forward toward Ji Yuxian. She raised her eyebrows slightly and reached out to touch his face. She cried, “Sure, yes!”

Suddenly, someone grabbed her wrist. A “crack” sound could be heard as her bones were crushed. Her wrist ended up bent in a strange angle.

Su Jiu, who was in Ji Yuxian’s arms, opened her eyes gradually. Her fingers clutched onto Lian Er’s wrist, and her eyes were cool as she smirked and said, “You’re touching the wrong person. This is my husband!”

The speaker spoke involuntarily, but the listener blinked with longing eyes. He watched Su Jiu with a burning passion and commented, “Mistress, I like this sentence the most!”

Lian Er screamed in pain. She raised her palm and shot it toward Su Jiu’s face.
