Su Jiu stared at him, confused.

Ji Yuxian retracted his hand and sat up. He pushed aside the bed drapes. “Jin Mi!”

Outside the door, nobody replied. Ji Yuxian suddenly remembered that the night before, he had ordered Jin Mi to return to the main courtyard.

He stepped onto the ground, barefoot, and walked over the thick rug. He opened the wardrobe and saw that in addition to the woman’s clothing inside, there were also a few articles of his own clothing as well.

He carelessly selected a purple robe and turned to Su Jiu, who was watching with confusion. He lifted an eyebrow. “Do you know how to dress somebody?”

Su Jiu shook her head.

“No.”

Ji Yuxian wasn’t irritated by her answer. He chuckled lightly and put the robe on. He spoke as he dressed, “It’s best if you learn how.”

Su Jiu nodded her head. “I see.”

Ji Yuxian, fully clothed, walked towards the door. As he approached the yard, he suddenly turned his head back, lips curved into a smile.

“Here, in advance, I wish Miss Su a joyful time as Young Mistress Ji.”

The doors shut with a creaking sound, and the sound of Ji Yuxian’s footsteps faded into the distance. Su Jiu patted her face to clear her head.

He just left?

What happened last night?

Su Jiu scratched her head. Seeing that it was not yet daybreak, she laid back down, planning to return to sleep.

Thump-thump!

Somebody suddenly knocked on the door. Su Jiu opened her eyes.

“Who’s there?”

“Miss, it’s me!”

It was Nanny’s voice.

“Come in!”

Su Jiu rested her head on her hands and stared at the ceiling of the bed.

Nanny opened the door and stepped into the room, followed by Chang Huan.

Worried about Su Jiu, Nanny was restless the entire night. She woke up before the sun rose. When she heard the sound of footsteps outside, she quickly got dressed. It was Chang Huan outside, on his way to check on Su Jiu. Nanny decided to come as well.

As soon as the two of them turned into the corridor, they saw Ji Yuxian exit the room. They quickly hid and didn’t step out again until they were sure Ji Yuxian was far away.

Nanny quickly walked to Su Jiu’s bed and sat down beside her to take a better look. “Miss, last night… did anything happen?”

Chang Huan asked, “Miss, did he do anything to you?”

Su Jiu shook her head. “No, nothing happened.”

Nanny looked at Su Jiu with suspicion, and then glanced at her lower body. She leaned in closer and asked, quietly, “Did you two… do it?”

“Do what?” Su Jiu asked.

Nanny wrinkled her brow as the awkwardness spread across her face. Su Jiu wasn’t knowledgeable in the ways of men and women. Nanny was anxious but didn’t know how to ask her.

But by the looks of it, perhaps it was true that nothing happened.

Nanny felt relief in her heart, but she remained quite worried. She stood up. “Go back to sleep, Miss. I’ll go draw some water for you to wash up later.”

Why did Nanny and Qiao An both seem like they knew something and that they were hesitant to say something? Su Jiu thought to herself.

After Nanny left, Su Jiu gestured for Chang Huan to sit beside her. “What are they talking about? They speak like riddlers.”

Chuang Huan turned red and then grinned. “It’s nothing, they’re just trying to seem mysterious. Chief, just remember not to let Ji Yuxian touch you. And especially don’t let him take off your clothes!”

Su Jiu nodded her head, still a bit unclear. She touched the jade pendant hidden inside her clothes and nodded.

“Don’t worry, nobody can touch me!”

Worried that Qiao An and the others would be concerned, Chang Huan discreetly went to their quarters to inform them that nothing had happened between Su Jiu and Ji Yuxian.

Qiao An breathed a sigh of relief when he heard, and told Chuang Huan to take good care of Su Jiu.

The sky had already turned bright. Chief Housekeeper Yu brought four servant-girls, a nurse, and a few servants to Su Jiu.

“Young Mistress, these people will be at your beck and call. If you need anything else, feel free to look for me!”

Each servant began to introduce herself one by one:

“I am Chunliu.”

“I am Xiahe.”

“I am Qiukui.”

“I am Dongxue.”

“And I am Mrs. Fan.”

Chief Housekeeper Yu bowed his head respectfully and said, “Young Mistress, I, your humble servant, have arranged for these people to serve you. Also, there is a main kitchen in the manor. Whenever you are hungry, just tell a servant what you want to eat. In your courtyard, there is an additional kitchen. If you’re not satisfied with the dishes from the main kitchen, you can order the kitchen in your courtyard to prepare separate dishes.”

Su Jiu nonchalantly nodded her head. “This shouldn’t be too much of a concern. I’m not a picky eater.”

Chief Housekeeper Yu nodded his head. “Then I’ll be on my way. If anything is needed, order a servant to come and find me.”

Nanny smiled and said, “Miss Su is new to Ji Manor, and not familiar with the rules here. I hope Chief Housekeeper Yu will assist her in the future, and teach her what she doesn’t know.”

Chief Housekeeper Yu maintained a respectful attitude. His voice was elderly, but stern. “Of course, Nanny. This is all part of my job.”

He nodded, retreated a few steps while remaining in a bowed position, and then turned towards the exit.

After descending the stone steps, Chief Housekeeper Yu hesitated for a moment before turning back to say, “Your humble servant wishes to remind Young Mistress of one thing. Although Master and Madame Ji are no longer here, Second Mistress is still here, in the back courtyard. Young Mistress has only just married into Ji Manor. If you have a moment, you should pay your respects to Second Mistress in Jinlan Pavillion.”

Nanny immediately replied, “Very well, we’ll go now. Thank you for the reminder, Chief Housekeeper.”

Chief Housekeeper Yu politely nodded his head and turned to exit the courtyard.

Nanny waited until Chief Housekeeper Yu was out of sight, and then turned towards Su Jiu. “Miss, Chief Housekeeper Yu is right. Take a moment to clean up, and then I’ll go with you to pay respects to Second Mistress!”

They had encountered Second Mistress before. Su Jiu nodded her head and said, “There’s nothing to clean up. Let’s go right now!”

Nanny glanced at the new servants. “Let me first organize the newcomers.”

Nanny had worked for a wealthy family for more than ten years and was more experienced than Su Jiu. Without much thought or consideration, she began to give orders.

“Chunliu and Xiahe will be responsible for serving Young Mistress and cleaning her chambers. Qiukui and Dongxue will be responsible for Young Mistress’s daily teas, snacks, and meals. Mrs. Fan is experienced, so you will oversee the other servants.”

“Yes!” The servants said in unison.

Nanny continued giving orders. “Additionally, Young Mistress only needs me and Chang Huan beside her at all times. Without Young Mistress’s orders, do not enter the inner quarters and disturb her.”

“Yes!”

Mrs. Fan, a woman around forty years old with a round waist and wide shoulders, stepped forward with a smile. “Don’t worry, Nanny. We will do our very best to serve Young Mistress. We will not do anything out of line.”

Nanny smiled. “Mrs. Fan is indeed clever. In the future, we will all live in one courtyard, and we will be one family. As long as Young Mistress is well, then she will treat everyone well.”

“Yes, yes! Young Mistress is graceful, elegant, virtuous, and looks to be a lady of great fortune. For us to serve Young Mistress is our fortune!” Mrs. Fan sweet-talked with a grin.

“We are new to Ji Manor. If there are any rules or taboos in Ji Manor that we should know about, please do remind us, Mrs. Fan.”

“Nanny is being too polite. I am just a humble servant! How would I dare lecture Young Mistress?”

Nanny knew in her heart that the world was a sly and greedy place. She spoke no more. She fished out a bag of money and distributed some silver to the servants.

“This is our very first time meeting. This is a token of Young Mistress’s generosity. In the future, as long as you are hardworking, there’ll be more where this came from!”

The servants, having gotten silver, were overjoyed. They nodded their heads in agreement.

“Young Mistress is indeed noble and generous! We audaciously accept the silver.” Mrs. Fan held up her piece of silver. “We humble servants shouldn’t bother Young Mistress any longer. I’ll take them around to get them accustomed to the courtyard. If Young Mistress needs anything, we’ll be at your beck and call!”

Nanny nodded and gestured for the servants to retreat.

Su Jiu, who had remained silent the entire time, waited until everybody was gone to speak. “Where did you get all that silver?”

Nanny had distributed at least ten taels of silver. They spent all of their money earlier. Where did the silver come from?

Nanny put the bag of money back.

“It was given to me by Madame Su.”

Madame Su? The surprise must have shown on Nanny’s face.

Su Jiu nodded her head with a chuckle. “Su Yuejiu isn’t even her biological daughter, yet she treats her as if she were. Looks like Madame Su is a kind-hearted woman.”

Nanny started when she heard what Su Jiu said. She lifted her head to say something but hesitated, considering her words. She finally spoke.

“It’s nearly noontime. Let’s go meet Second Mistress.”

“Alright.”

Together, Su Jiu, Chuang Huan, and Nanny made their way towards Jinlan Pavillion.
