Chapter 30
Chapter 30: The Jealous Little Dragon Daughter
“There’s really no need for a formal apprenticeship ceremony; that stuff is meaningless. Besides, I’m not really Liliya’s true teacher—I’m more like a guide. How far you get will ultimately depend on yourself.”
“Alright, I understand, Miss Vilyric.”
Was it just a figment of Vilyric’s imagination, or did the princess seem a bit regretful when she said that?
“Alright, it’s getting late. Liliya, you should head back and rest. Think carefully about the path you want to choose. Come back to my room tomorrow night at the same time.”
“Okay… wait, Miss Vilyric, I might not be able to come tomorrow night.”
Liliya instinctively wanted to agree, but seemed to suddenly remember something and hurriedly said, “I’ve already discussed it with General Layton; the raid team is heading out tomorrow night.”
“So soon?” Vilyric furrowed her brow.
“We have no choice; speed is of the essence. No one knows when the beastmen will launch their second attack.”
“Alright… but Liliya, are you sure you want to go yourself?”
“…Yes.”
The princess didn’t hesitate and wore a rather determined expression.
“Well… do as you wish. I, the poor working person, will have to leave the city with my employer anyway. I can always find a chance to teach later.” Vilyric shrugged nonchalantly.
Seeing that her guard didn’t show any disdain for her decision, Liliya felt relieved, “Then it’s decided, see you tomorrow?”
“See you tomorrow, good night ~”
Liliya quickly pushed the door open and left.
Vilyric sat in her chair, quietly gazing out at the night, lost in thought.
In a flash of light, the golden-haired little dragon daughter appeared behind the girl, asking somewhat confused, “Master, do you really intend to teach that human about the strength of our world?”
Through their shared vision, Xiao Guang had seen everything that happened in the room earlier.
Vilyric smiled as she ruffled her pet’s little head, “What? Don’t you want me to do that?”
The little dragon daughter lowered her head, sounding gloomy: “Whatever you do is right, Master. I just don’t understand why you’re being so nice to a mere human, just because she’s some princess? She’s just the leader of ants; it shouldn’t mean anything to you.”
Hmm? Why does it sound a bit jealous? Can pets get jealous too…?
Searching for the right words, Vilyric patiently explained: “You can’t say that. Since we met, Liliya has provided me with a lot of help. Thanks to her, I could quickly learn various common knowledge and information about this world; although it’s intangible, it’s still quite useful, don’t you think?”
After hesitating for a moment, the girl continued: “Moreover, I actually quite like Liliya. She’s determined, ambitious, and brave. I really want to see how far she can go.”
“Master likes her?”
The little dragon daughter’s tone suddenly became a bit strange.
“Ugh, cough cough cough… It’s admiration, that kind of ‘like’! Don’t overthink it!”
Vilyric almost choked on her own saliva.
This little dragon has a knack for picking up key words—why do I feel like a husband being interrogated by his wife about an affair? Clearly, I, Xiao Guang, and Liliya aren’t in that kind of relationship…
Stare…
“Really?”
“Really.”
Vilyric answered without hesitation.
“…At least for now, I don’t have those kinds of feelings for Liliya. Sure, she’s a really cute beautiful girl, but I’m not the type to fall for every pretty face I see. No worries, I have a good grasp on that.”
Seeing Vilyric’s calm demeanor and serious tone, Xiao Guang felt a bit more relaxed.
She didn’t know why she was particularly hung up on this matter. Initially, no matter what her master wanted to do, her pet should unconditionally support her, but the little dragon just couldn’t help but speak up this time, something she hadn’t done before.
“Sorry, Master, for saying something strange.”
“It’s fine, get some rest. I have a feeling that our princess’s actions this time will likely be quite interesting…”
…
On the quiet night, even the birds had returned to their nests to rest. The grand walls of Wanku Fortress loomed like a giant beast over the land, ahead of which lay an endless whispering plain.
It is said that many people, while resting on this plain at night, occasionally hear soft whispers like a girl’s murmur. Yet, when they try to catch the sounds, they find nothing…
After several investigations, the experts of the kingdom concluded it was due to the wind passing through the unique terrain of the plain at night, coincidentally creating sounds similar to human voices, and not some rumored ghost or ancient relic.
Though many scholars disagreed with this conclusion, they couldn’t offer a more convincing explanation, and over time it became the consensus among most people in the kingdom.
The flickering fires of the beastman army were faintly visible in the distance. Since the first tentative attack was repelled, they had stayed about ten kilometers away from Wanku Fortress, neither advancing nor retreating, leaving Liliya and others unable to determine the enemy commander’s actual intentions.
But that wasn’t going to hinder her actions.
In the cover of darkness, a small door on the side of Wanku Fortress suddenly opened.
Countless light cavalry swiftly poured out silently, blending into the night. Once the last warrior had dashed out of the fortress, the door quietly closed again, as if nothing had happened…
In the beastmen’s camp, at the center.
A figure shrouded in a black cloak moved quietly through the night.
He didn’t deliberately hide his presence, but the passing beastman soldiers seemed to completely ignore him, allowing him to approach the massive central tent unhindered.
“Stop! Don’t come any closer.”
Reaching the edge of the central army’s tent, the black-cloaked figure suddenly halted, as a few sharp claws pressed against his back—just a little more pressure, and they could easily pierce his heart.
But the cloaked figure remained calm and instead spoke in a somewhat appreciative low voice: “I’ve heard that the Fox-Human tribe excels in the art of stealth, particularly at hiding, assassination, and reconnaissance. To see it in person today is indeed as rumored. A mere juvenile little fox can actually see through my secret technique.”
“You’re a legend, aren’t you?” he narrowed his eyes.
“Nothing much, just you being frog in the well. I recognize you, human. What do you want this time?”
The cool, damp night air carried a voice that, while not skilled, was pleasant to hear—mixed with allure and coldness, obviously the one holding down the black cloak was a girl, or rather… a mother fox.
Little fox Mavis harbored strong hostility towards this intruder.
Had she not seen him talk with the tribe leader earlier and leave without a hitch, she would’ve simply killed a human sneaking into her army without a second thought.
Unfazed by the little fox girl’s cold mockery and animosity, the black cloak figure responded with some amusement: “It’s naturally important business. Is it really alright for me to not meet the High Priest?”
“You can’t just meet the tribe leader whenever you want…”
As she spoke halfway through, the little fox’s voice suddenly stalled, disgruntled, she clicked her tongue and retracted her outstretched claws.
“The High Priest is available to see you now, human.”
