Chapter 25 - Guests From Afar
Yang Shifei felt slightly awkward while Luo Xian’er cast a meaningful glance at the two of them.
Just as the atmosphere was becoming tense, Tan Xiang quickly looked away and regained her usual indifference.
“Miss, we have distinguished guests visiting.”
“…Who is it?”
“The group from the Shoujian Sect who just arrived in East City, along with a little princess who insisted on coming.”
“Lead them to the guest hall, serve tea, and prepare some pastries to entertain them.”
“Understood.” Tan Xiang nodded slightly and turned away with graceful steps.
Seeing her unperturbed reaction, Yang Shifei felt somewhat reassured, though he couldn’t help but wonder what the maid was thinking.
Luo Xian’er, seemingly deep in thought, glanced at Yang Shifei.
“Would you like to accompany me to meet the guests?”
“Me?” Yang Shifei collected his thoughts and frowned. “I heard Tan Xiang mention there is a… princess among the guests?”
Luo Xian’er’s social circle was becoming increasingly impressive.
“She is the daughter of the Duke Dingjiang, Shang Wutao. Their mansion is in the northern district.” Luo Xian’er remained calm. “Although she is a county princess, she is quite approachable and easy to get along with.”
After a moment’s thought, Yang Shifei quickly agreed. After all, Luo Xian’er had already announced him as her ‘fiancé’ to the public, so he naturally needed to support her in these situations.
“However, doesn’t the name of that sect sound a bit strange?”
“It means ‘Guardian of the Mountain Stream.'” Luo Xian’er gave him a slightly reproachful look. “Although this sect is not the most prestigious in the Liang Empire, it is still one of the prominent sects, with close ties to the royal family. Its founder, over two hundred years ago, guarded the Heavenly Water Stream with several disciples, repelling three hundred soldiers and protecting the ambushed emperor at the time, hence the name ‘Shoujian.'”
Yang Shifei scratched his head and chuckled awkwardly. It was a good thing he hadn’t made any careless jokes.
Seeing his comical reaction, Luo Xian’er’s gaze softened slightly. “Let’s go.”
Soon, they arrived at the guest hall of the Luo Mansion.
The young guests stood up and cupped their fists in greeting. Dressed in white robes and blue gowns, with hair tied back and swords on their backs, they all exuded an extraordinary demeanor.
At the forefront was an elder with a white beard, dressed like an old Taoist, with a benevolent smile on his face. “Miss Luo, you’ve grown taller since we last met a year ago.”
Luo Xian’er walked unhurriedly and responded calmly, “Elder Yan, you also look well. But where is the little princess?”
“Hehe, the little princess is a bit mischievous and followed your maid to the kitchen to cause some trouble.”
“…Let her be. The princess knows her limits.” Luo Xian’er looked at the people behind the elder. “And these are…?”
“They are disciples of our sect, eighteen or nineteen years old, all considered talented youths.” The white-bearded old man known as Elder Yan chuckled, “We don’t expect them to be of much use, just to broaden their horizons. If there are any menial tasks, they can handle them.”
The young disciples of the Shoujian Sect were now holding their breath, mesmerized by the dreamlike beauty of Luo Xian’er, feeling that no celestial being could compare.
Their gazes quickly shifted to Yang Shifei, who stood beside her, and they frowned in unison.
Elder Yan also gave a curious glance, “Miss Luo, who could this young man be?”
“He is my fiancé,” Luo Xian’er said calmly. “We have only recently become engaged, so not many people know about it yet.”
Yang Shifei cupped his hands in a polite gesture, his smile showing neither arrogance nor servility.
The disciples of the Shoujian Sect were filled with regret, lamenting that such an extraordinary beauty already had someone in her heart. They, well-versed in both martial arts and literature, naturally disdained the idea of coveting another’s beloved and could only envy Yang Shifei.
Elder Yan, however, had a more dramatic reaction.
His eyes widened in shock, and his wrinkled face showed his astonishment. “Miss Luo, when did you find a fiancé?!”
“Not long ago,” Luo Xian’er replied, gesturing for everyone to take their seats. “My family has been urging me for a long time, so I decided to find a fiancé myself to give them some peace of mind. Recently, I succeeded in doing so.”
With that, she gently pulled Yang Shifei’s sleeve, and they took their seats together at the head of the table.
“You mean you found him yourself?” Elder Yan’s voice was filled with surprise, his expression shifting rapidly.
This strange reaction puzzled not only Yang Shifei but also the disciples behind the elder, who all had peculiar looks on their faces.
It was a mystery. Why was their elder so agitated?
Was the elder here to arrange a marriage for his grandson or something? But he didn’t have a grandson.
The disciples of the Shoujian Sect were at a loss.
Seeing the awkward atmosphere, they were worried that the elder’s overreaction might scare Miss Luo. If things got chaotic here, they’d have a hard time explaining themselves.
“Uh—”
Elder Yan finally realized his odd behavior, smiled awkwardly, and stroked his beard as he took his seat.
“This is truly unexpected. I never thought Miss Luo would find a suitable partner. But should this matter be reported to…?”
“No need,” Luo Xian’er said, sipping her tea calmly, her tone as serene as ever. “This is my own marriage and has nothing to do with others.”
Elder Yan hesitated but finally sighed. “Then, Miss Luo, please take care of yourself. If there’s anything amiss, our Shoujian Sect will do our best to assist.”
“Thank you for your concern, Elder Yan. I will be more careful,” Luo Xian’er replied.
The conversation between the two sides was somewhat cryptic, and Yang Shifei found it a bit puzzling, only understanding that there might be some undisclosed secrets behind Miss Luo.
Perhaps it was related to her family background?
Fortunately, Elder Yan didn’t erupt again. Instead, he chatted with Luo Xian’er about the situation in various parts of the Liang Empire and the recent events in East City.
Yang Shifei sat quietly, listening intently. Information transmission was extremely limited in ancient times, so hearing a bit of news from outside East City was a rare opportunity.
Unfortunately, their conversation was brief, and Elder Yan quickly changed the subject.
“As long as Miss Luo’s life is peaceful recently, as for this young man…”
Elder Yan’s gaze shifted to Yang Shifei with interest. “With fair and handsome features, you indeed have the appearance of a refined scholar. Have you achieved any academic success?”
“I am flattered by Elder Yan’s compliment,” Yang Shifei replied calmly, bowing his head. “I am from a village and have no academic achievements. I have only studied some arithmetic and now work as an accountant at the Clear Moon Pavilion.”
“Ah, I see. My guess was wrong,” Elder Yan said, patting his forehead, but his eyes showed surprise.
Luo Xian’er set down her tea cup and spoke calmly, “Not only is he an accountant, but he has also learned a bit of martial arts and has considerable strength.”
“Oh?” Elder Yan raised an eyebrow, smiling. “That happens to be my forte.”
The disciples of the Shoujian Sect also cast curious glances at Yang Shifei, secretly appraising him.
His physique was good, unlike an ordinary scholar who was frail. His eyes were bright, and his back was straight, showing some signs of martial arts training.
However, he seemed a bit older. Nowadays, it would be difficult to cultivate internal energy at his age.
“Young man, you have good aptitude, but unfortunately, you’re a bit old,” Elder Yan said gently, stroking his white beard. “Why don’t I teach you a set of martial arts to improve your health? This way, you can better take care of Miss Luo in the future.”
Yang Shifei smiled and was about to politely decline when his sleeve was gently pulled.
He glanced sideways to see Luo Xian’er blinking her beautiful eyes and whispering, “It’s okay. Elder Yan has a good relationship with my Luo family. Teaching you martial arts can be considered a gift from the older generation.”
“Miss Luo is right,” Elder Yan said with a smile, waving his hand. “Young man, don’t be so formal.”
“Thank you, Elder,” Yang Shifei said gratefully.
“Why don’t you come with me to the courtyard, where I’ll demonstrate a few moves for you,” Elder Yan said, standing up and patting the armrest. “In a few days, I’ll redraw a set of illustrations and give them to you.”
…
Shortly after, the group walked out of the guest hall and into the spacious courtyard.
Elder Yan descended the steps first, rolled up his sleeves, and turned back with a hearty laugh. “Young man, if there’s anything you don’t understand, I’ll demonstrate it a few more times for you.”
Yang Shifei nodded earnestly. “I’ll try my best to remember.”
“Hehe, then let’s begin,” Elder Yan said.
With that, he quickly circulated his breath, spreading out his hands, and his aura suddenly changed.
Seeing this, Yang Shifei’s eyes flickered.
Although Elder Yan appeared old and frail, his natural aura was not to be underestimated. He was indeed a venerable elder of a sect.
While Yang Shifei watched attentively, the disciples of the Shoujian Sect beside him were sweating profusely.
What was Elder Yan doing today?
They had come to visit, but the martial art he was teaching was the most difficult body-tempering technique in the sect. Even the young geniuses had to endure considerable hardship for several days before they could grasp it. Teaching it on the spot like this was simply embarrassing.
Yang Shifei seemed honest and kind-hearted. It was unfair to treat him like this when they were being hospitable.
The disciples of the Shoujian Sect exchanged glances, sweating nervously, and began to plan.
If Yang Shifei couldn’t remember a single move later, they would step forward to smooth things over with a few good words. Then, they would earnestly teach him some simple sword techniques and even give him a sword to alleviate the awkward situation.
If he could barely imitate even half a move, they would praise him profusely.
This wasn’t unreasonable. After all, not a single disciple in their sect could master it at once. If this person could learn even a little bit, they would admire him greatly.
